I only have the free version of AVG. When I clicked on the link AVG popped up and said one of the files was a virus(trojan?). I extracted all to a folder (desktop-virii), during that process AVG warned me about 4-5 times that they were virii. I did not double click on the folder to see what's in it because I'm afraid that that alone will infect me. I ran AVG and saw that that it said I had 10 virii, but when the scan was finished it only asked me to put 2(3?) in the vault.
BTW, what is the best way to get rid of the desktop-virii folder? Is deleting it good enough?

Thanks.

1Cheap2Crazy,try this from an earlier post in this thread,

Just clear your cache. It looks like the downloaded viruses are in your cache and need to be cleaned out. Disable your AVG autoprotect if needed, then go to IE and clear out your cache, and then reenable the AVG autoprotect. Then do a scan again.
.

I just deleted my downloaded virus files ,you can run a full scan after from your AV software if you want to be sure you`re clean.

I'm clean now. I suspect AVG was counting the virii in the zipped AND unzipped folder. When I check the details all virii were found on my Dektop\virii folder. AVG seems OK.

There are 8 virii and trojans in the zip, so if AVG counted twice it should have found 16. If it counted twice and found 10, then obviously it only found 5 of the present threats. 5 out of 8 sucks.

I'm using Avast Home edition 4.1 and it caught all three upon unzipping them. :) Yey for Avast!

Just further proof that McAfee blows. Mydoom.F (a new strain) was just discovered on Feb 20th this year... we got hit at work. Even last night, I was able to open the zip file and mess with the worm itself. But I emailed it home, and Panda caught it and disinfected it.

McAfee is a joke.

McAfee is a joke.

well, after findingout that my (ex) beloved Norton allowed many viruses into my well protected system I went out and bought PC-Cillin 2003 edition which has virus protection and firewall so after installing it and running the updates I DL the first folder in this thread (it had the 3 original virus-files)

and when I scanned the folder which was on my c: PC-Cillin 2003 said that the folder was virus free, WTH???

Then I scanned each individual virus in the folder and it then said the file(s) were virus free....hmmmmm??? as of right now I am using Bitdefender whhich I love and also PC-Cillin 2003 as my virus protection.

In PC-Cillin's defense though it did catch a few worms on my system so I guess its OK.

PSA, if you're using Thunderbird for email there's a bug with Panda that causes an error window to appear saying "unable to write to the mailbox". turn off Panda to get your emails.

I'm actually having a problem with Panda and Outlook 2003. Some HTML emails are coming through empty, and sometimes I get connection errors. Panda customer support has been a nightmare... 0% response success rate. I'm pretty disappointed. Their web site advertises:

Tech Support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year*

* Titanium Antivirus 2004 includes one year's services at no additional cost: 24h e-mail and Internet Tech Support, 24h SOS Virus against new viruses and daily updates.

24hour e-mail support? NOT!

Yes, I've had similar non-results with Panda's help. It's a good thing I can solve most of my own problems using google and what not, otherwise it would be a real problem. All in all though, I just wanted a virus scanner that found viruses--and that's what it has done. Good enough for me.

I really like Bitdefender Pro V7.2,sometimes you have like 2 updates in one day,I also have the basic Trend Micro AV that`s part of SystemSuite V5 as a backup which has free updates.

I just told a friend to get a basic AV program on his PC(AVG) since he`s running none at the moment.

I tried using Bitdefender and found that it slowed down Internet browsing quite a bit, as it was scanning every single file that was being saved in Temp Int Files dir. When I disabled the Firewall, it didn't help, but when I disabled the virus protection, everything went back to normal.

I gave up on it and went to sleep, and am now at work. Anyone know of any tweaks or settings that I could use in order to have it not scan every single file that is browsed, but only scan when receiving an email or choosing to download a file?

BTW, my system specs for the machine I ran it on are: 1.4ghz celeron tualatin, 512mb ram, WD 80gb 8meg cache.

You can play around in "settings" part of anti-virus part of Bitdefender, options there to scan all files ,program files only etc.

Btw I find Opera is faster then IE as a browser so if you want extra speed try Opera, you can always use both at once.

An OEM version of Trend's PC-Cillin comes with Vcom SystemSuite 5. (www.v-com.com) which you can get for a pretty good price after $20. competive "upgrade" rebate. SS is one of the best utiliity suites out there too (IMO, it's the best). You get the Sygate personal firewall too.

I posted a link to this thread on the Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition support boards and told them that NAV fails to find two of the virii. We'll see how long it takes for them to get it fixed...

Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro with latest Virus Definitions caught everything in that zip file. Don't know why some people say it doesn't work...maybe they need to manually do a live update or something.

Dude, somebody just recently reported the two virii that Norton didn't catch, so now of course it will catch everything. Refer to a few posts before yours. :)

Probably didn't wok for them properly because they didn't set it to the highest level of protection in the Bloodhound Heuristics. I'm thinking most of the people here probably just install the software and run update without tweaking there programs for maximum protection.

If you read the posts you'll see people including myself talked about setting heuristics to max.

Sorry, didn't feel like looking through all 5 pages. Norton AV 2004 Pro works great for me. Caught everything in the zip file without unzipping. I'm through with this thread as it is a waste of time.
