lets look at it this way -- 90 lashes...no jail time, no need to allocate money to house, feed and cloth her. 90 lashes gets the point accross and she can go home right away knowing that she has to spend no time in juvie, no need for a probation officer.....seems like a win, win to me!!

What`s interesting is that in countries where they punish in that way or where they cut a hand off or brand you on the forhead for a crime, these countrys have hardly any crime at all....go figure...

A 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to 90 lashes and two months' prison in Saudi Arabia

90 lashes seems like an over the top punishment to me? It's another country/culture so I don't sit in judgement of them but at the same time their culture doesn't impress me much.

LOL... You act like GWB wouldn't have vetoed anything that would have harmed the relationship between him and his hand holding boyfriends in SA. Seriously, name me ONE thing done between 2000-2006 that was an attempt to get off oil.
You act like I said something about GWB.

GWB talked big ina speech, then didn't do shit about it either.

So, what is your crew doing?

But what gets me is these holier than thou hick Americans who think for some reason they have a say in somebody elses culture, especially when these same hick Americans if they lived in that culture would be cowering at this very moment in fear.....

Maybe if schools were able to hand out lashings the education system in this country wouldn't be in the shitter and we wouldn't be developing the next generation of youth who have no respect for anything other than themselves.

Oh here we go, another "kids these days deserve a beating" nonsense.

Cut the old man rant. It's all too common and too trite on these forums.

I knew someone who taught in a very bad inner-city high school in Baltimore who was punched several times during her three years there. IMO a student who physically assaults a teacher or administrator SHOULD be on the receiving end of corporal punishment. Not that I wish to make excuses for the Saudis, on the whole they're a bunch of barbarians. Still, I knew people who went to Catholic school 25 years ago and got whacked all the time by sadistic nuns.

Er, corporal punishment could be wrapping someone's knuckles with a ruler like in Catholic school. It doesn't have to be flogging someone 90 times in public. I'm not going to argue the morality of corporal punishment as a general idea, but I will note that the mere threat of a single whack usually does the trick. Whether or not corporal punishment is immoral as an idea, I think there is a morality problem with applying more than is necessary to achieve the purpose.

I don`t need to understand the distinction between citizen and country!

What I do understansd is that she knowingly broke the law and rules and she probably also knew what the punishment would be....

Ignorance of the law is no excuse!
Also as a nation it is none of our buisness!!

You wax all eloquent about a country worth living in....
I`m sorry but I don`t see the masses leaving Saudi...so all I can guess is that you are talking about a country that you would find to be worth living in!

As much as you or I dislike their form of punishemnt or anything else about that country it is NOT our concern!

At the end of the day nothing we can say...nothing we have said or are going to say will or has made any difference at all!!

Not our buisness~!!!

Nonsense. We don't have the right to force them to change their legal system. However, as non-brain dead sentient beings with a code of morality we have every right to criticize them. This kind of cultural relativism, though admirable to a point, can be taken to extremes. Next thing it's genocide, and well golly gee, who are we to judge? It's THEIR culture and THEIR country after all.

Coming from my own culture I attempt to understand other, different cultures. Sorry, but I don't understand this at all. What damage was done to warrant such a punishment? Is the idea of punishment there that if you screw up, no matter how small and insignificant you must be brutally punished?

I guess I'm a "hick American" that is in fear of such a culture and I don't even have to live there.

Yoda is clearly one of little morals or care about humankind and thus changing his views would be difficult.

It is NOT our (the West, the US, the EU, or anyone else) job to make other people live the way we do. It's not our job to make everyone behave the way we think they should.

Different nations exist for a reason. Their value system is so far removed from ours that there would be no way for them to assimilate into a western way of life. We should not force them to.

I agree we cannot and should not attempt to force them to live like us. However, we should not condone this type of thing and definitely should not send them so much of our money for oil.

just call me a "hick american" then.

sorry pal but whipping a 13 year old girl 90 fucking times is barbaric and savage. we as humans have the right to condemn such actions and should pressure the "culture" that carries out inhumane treatment like this to stop it.

what gets me is is your blase attitude of "oh well, its their culture we should butt out" you make me sick.

I respect that culture.
Me, too. I don't wish I lived there, but I do respect it. It's what works for them. How dare I say mine is any better.

OK all jokes aside, I'm having a hard time deciding which culture I respect more, for example Saudi where they treat their girls in this manner or North Korea where hundreds of thousands of people are in gulags. It's just so hard, both are so respectable, but which to pick?

Why pick? What are you going to do about it? What would you propose the American government do about it?

you are laughing at a 13 year old girl that is getting 90 fucking lashes?

We laugh at them for going way past overboard when disciplining a young girl.

They laugh at us when people who get out of jail go right back to their criminal ways, killing, stealing, and raping.

I'm a bit torn here...

Why do you people keep talking about this as if we're saying the US government needs to go and do something about it? Back away from the straw man; he'll still be there tomorrow and we can get up bright and early and play just as soon as we're finished breakfast. I promise.
