will islam ever let the middle east evolve out of the middle ages? 90 lashes is enough to kill a grown man.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/wor...enced-90-lashes-took-mobile-phone-school.html

A 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to 90 lashes and two months' prison in Saudi Arabia after she took a mobile phone to school.

A court ordered the girl to be flogged in front of her classmates following an assault on the school principal, according to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan.

After the assault she was discovered to have concealed a mobile phone, breaking strict Saudi regulations banning the use of camera-equipped phones in girls' schools.
A criminal gets a public flogging by two officials in Saudi Arabia

Brutal: public floggings, such as in this archive picture, are a common punishment handed down by religious courts in Saudi Arabia

Al-Watan said a court in the northeastern Gulf port of Jubail had sentenced the girl to 90 lashes inside her school, followed by two months' detention.

The punishment is harsher than tha dished out to some robbers and looters.

If you saw your neighbor, whipping his girl (and maybe chanting) would you ignore it?

What would you do if your neighbor lined up 5 men behind her bound and gagged body? And the one man steps forward, pulls a knife from his pocket, and saws off her head?

Do you understand any distinction between "neigbbor" and "country"? Do you want one world government so that you can enforce one rule on the world like our federal government does for us?

The Saudis, at least from a legal perspective, are savages; they are beasts as barbaric as any feral animal. What sort of a subhuman could take a whip to a girl and as she cries out and strike her another 89 times. What sort of a subhuman could even order such a thing.
Maybe if schools were able to hand out lashings the education system in this country wouldn't be in the shitter and we wouldn't be developing the next generation of youth who have no respect for anything other than themselves.
Yeah that's right. The US should adopt Saudi Arabia's educational system. Great fvcking idea, you have solved it!!!
it cannot be denied that it works for them
What does that mean it "works for them". It "works" for starving North Koreans to pick grains of seed off the ground where they've fallen from trains, too, what does that mean?
I respect their society. You do know the difference between respect and like?
So you're a nihilist. I don't respect their society and neither should you because to respect it in such a manner shows really how little you appreciate your own good fortune to live where you do.

JEDIYoda would, after all it's not his kid. Mind your own business.

Do you understand the distinction between citizen and human? Lashing a girl 90 times is wrong regardless of what country she is in and whether she attacked her head mistress or not. It is savage. Most people realize this which is why most countries worth living in have outlawed it, because that evolution that allowed them to be a country worth living in also saw fit to do away with such inhumanity.

The Muslims in Saudi pretend they honor their women, but this is mere lip service, they cage them like petulant children. They cannot drive (at least until last year or two if at all), go to gyms, they better make sure they're not raped either lest they take the blame.

Obviously there are a few good public schools, but only in high end areas. The majority of schools aren't really teaching their students anything--the schools claim more money is necessary. It's always more money...

The military and the police always do the same as well... do you complain then?

Is it so difficult for you to denounce evil when you see it?

This is an abuse of human rights, a big glaring mark on humanity, and your chief concern is to rebuke the opposition to it. Maybe we didn't want a "one world government" to police Saudi Arabia. Maybe we just want to tell them to go f' themselves. Maybe we want to oppose it the way many peaceful protesters do.

Why is that so difficult for you to accept and join us?

I knew someone who taught in a very bad inner-city high school in Baltimore who was punched several times during her three years there. IMO a student who physically assaults a teacher or administrator SHOULD be on the receiving end of corporal punishment. Not that I wish to make excuses for the Saudis, on the whole they're a bunch of barbarians. Still, I knew people who went to Catholic school 25 years ago and got whacked all the time by sadistic nuns.

Corporal Punishment has definitely had its place at times. Anybody who's ever spanked their kid feels it can be acceptable under certain circumstances but being paddled a few times in class is substantially different than being whipped 90.

Actually, I misspoke earlier. I didn't realize how humane Saudi's lashings were. Nothing to see here afterall.

http://www.slate.com/id/2204467/

And according to Islamic law, a flogger is supposed to hold a copy of the Quran under his arm to curb his range of motion and ensure that the strokes are not too powerful.
Can't argue with that. Good sense.
Few cases of death by lashing in the Muslim world have been reported.
Sweet!
In 2004, a 14-year-old Iranian boy was killed while serving a sentence of 85 lashes
er,oops. However, this boy KNEW that during Ramadan you should not eat in public. And he did. He deserved to die. I mean, come on, that is about as evil as it gets, right next to having a personal torture chamber or spitting on a sidewalk.

My issue isn't with the fact that she's being punished for assaulting a principle, it's the whole 90 lashes thing. Students who assault teachers deserve a good whacking IMO, but this sounds more like a Royal Navy style flogging with a cat-o-nine tails.

That not a very good argument.....
If I was living in that country where that was the established punishment for breaking the law as much as I did not agree, I would ignore it!

Since I live in the USA and whipping is NOT a form of punishement handed down by the courts, I would not ignore it!

I don`t need to understand the distinction between citizen and country!

What I do understansd is that she knowingly broke the law and rules and she probably also knew what the punishment would be....

Ignorance of the law is no excuse!
Also as a nation it is none of our buisness!!

You wax all eloquent about a country worth living in....
I`m sorry but I don`t see the masses leaving Saudi...so all I can guess is that you are talking about a country that you would find to be worth living in!

As much as you or I dislike their form of punishemnt or anything else about that country it is NOT our concern!

At the end of the day nothing we can say...nothing we have said or are going to say will or has made any difference at all!!

Not our buisness~!!!

Oh, so you are in favor of beating kids are you? Get ready for Child Protective Services to come knocking on your door.

Take a look at the picture. The offender is fully dressed in a burkha, likely with multiple layers as this is Saudi Arabia. They generally don't strike bare skin.

Judicial flogging, as a form of Sharia law, is common practice in Muslim countries throughout the Middle East and parts of Asia and North Africa. There is seldom any bloodying unless the imam in charge decides you really need to feel the pain. If you are not at all used to physical pain it might be a shock, but that is the point.

90, delivered 30 at a time, lashes is the usual mild rebuke for women, the maximum for most women is around 200 but it can be much higher. Males in serious cases get 4-5,000. They usually do it 50 lashes at a time, so you can see a severe punishment can go on for weeks or months. They don't want to kill you, so a doctor will make sure that you are healthy enough each time.

Almost always some prison time is involved. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

Non-Muslim Westerners are offered a chance to convert to Islam for a reduced sentence. If you don't, expect a pretty severe punishment as you are going to be an oddity and a novelty.

You can learn a bit more about this practice here -

http://www.insidesaudi.com/whippingwomen.html

While it certainly is a painful exercise on many levels and I condemn it, it is much more of a public humiliation and a lesson to the public at large than anything else.

lets look at it this way -- 90 lashes...no jail time, no need to allocate money to house, feed and cloth her. 90 lashes gets the point accross and she can go home right away knowing that she has to spend no time in juvie, no need for a probation officer.....seems like a win, win to me!!

What`s interesting is that in countries where they punish in that way or where they cut a hand off or brand you on the forhead for a crime, these countrys have hardly any crime at all....go figure...

It would be highly unusual for there to be no jail time. The flogging is for public humiliation, you still have to do the time. This girl got two months incarceration as well as being flogged on the school grounds.

That's just a retarded way to look at a matter like this, really. Oh look, you live in North Korea where it's accepted to get shipped to a Gulag if you talk against the state but hey it's an established punishment so no worries.

Sounds awesome, you might want to move there.

Thats just a retarded ignorant comment to suggest because somebody has an opinion they move there....you are way to full of yourself!!!

Whats funny is you ignorant people who use the worse case scenarios to try to wax all eloquent about a subject!

Of course there are things we should be concerned about; but then there are things such as a form of punishment that although it is not done in Wastern states, it is currently an accepted practice in middle eastern states and states in that part of the world.

Live with it!!
