Samsung Note 5 rumors/hype thread

I thought it looked great, still not getting one though, my protest for Samsung taking it mainstream, the previous generations were capable of being nerd devices, not a fan of their new direction.

So after several days of use:
- the phone overall is snappier and more responsive on stock software than my Note 4 running a debloated, optimized ROM. Swipes, launches, closes all happen a bit faster.
- very happy with the camera - I've stopped reaching for my wife's iPhone for baby pictures
- very happy with the fingerprint scanner - fast and reliable
- battery life seems inline with my Note 4 which again was running a debloated, custom ROM. However will need to give it a couple weeks in my normal routine.

One thing I do miss in a rooted phone was to be able to clear up my status bar of all the icons (bluetooth, NFC, alarm, carrier) for things I didn't need to know were still on.

I did not know they had launched the Note 5 already and was very surprised to run into two full-page ad on a newspaper the other day. (Samsung's marketing $$..) I read a few quick reviews on the net and came around with mixed feelings. I had thought Samsung would keep the functional aspects of the previous Note series phones even though they made concessions on the S series. I know at least one customer they probably lost because of the sealed battery. It is too bad he has been waiting for the Note 5 to replace his aging Note 3. I thought the Note 4's design found an excellent balance between aesthetics and functions.

On the other hand I am very much in love with the look of the S6 Edge+ and cannot wait to see it in person. I bought an original S6 Edge but had to send it back because of wrong color. (the idiot sent me a gold one after assuring me with a green one) I was very frustrated because I could not find a green one.

The experience was not all for naught because I did learn that imported Galaxy phones now work flawlessly with GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile). So now I at least know how to avoid carrier bloats on Galaxy devices. Looking forward to seeing both the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ in person.

in particular, I think we might start seeing quality high-power Qi devices. I've got about 5 cheap chinese ones that won't deliver more than 600mA, even with fantastic power supply.

Yeah the design flaw is called being stupid lol. Surprised by how many online articles I've seen about this. Total non-issue for anyone with a bit of sense. To quote someone on XDA:

Lol these must be trolls. Why the hell would anyone put the pen in backwards?! That's an operator error.

These tips might also be helpful to those who did this.
- Don't force the spen into the headphone jack.
- Don't slide the spen into your ears, nose, or eyeballs. It will hurt.

Got myself a Note 5 the other night. Spent the evening downloading apps and games and setting it up, watched some Youtube too. Managed 5 hours of screen on time with 13% battery left, not bad for the first day. Changed the theme to Material Dark and it definitely looks nice, but you can't hide stuff in the app drawer, and I need the gestures from Nova Launcher so stock launcher didn't last long. Samsung finally let's us get rid of the search and connect buttons from the notification drawer, which is great!

So far I'm liking it a lot. Between the Note 4 and Note 5 I think I would definitely go with the 5. Battery and mSD are not very high priority items for me. It's nice to have an S-Pen again!

Picked up my Note 5 on Friday and looooove it. Few questions for you Note veterans:

1) Good cases? I was eyeballing the wallet type kickstand leather case, seemed practical, but the phone feels really fragile so I went with an otterbox. Extra bulk won't bother me, but will I be able to use the stylus fairly easily with it?

2) Are there better apps to use the stylus note taking with? The default seems okay...I have to get used to it I guess. I like jotting down notes but is there a written-to-text option?

3) Is there a way to disable the button on the stylus?

Within S-Note while editing a page, you can use the selection tool to select your hand writing and then transform it into text.

You could also use the Samsung hand writing keyboard to translate hand writing to text on the fly, useful because it will work in any app.

Well I do understand the complaints - part of a company's job is to take into account people's stupidity. It seems like it would have been easy enough to make the end of the pen slightly thicker so it would take force to push in, even with the flush design.

On the other hand, some sites are making it a bigger deal than it is IMO. In owning the Note 2, 3, 4, 5 - I've never once accidentally tried to insert the wrong side in. For the comment about kids - I don't know if I'd ever let a young child use the pen since it'd pretty much guarantee that it'll be lost.

1. It doesn't need to be shoved in backwards. There is zero resistance to inserting it backwards.

2. Have you never made a mistake? Lit the wrong end of a cigarette perhaps?

The S Pen being so easily inserted the wrong way and the possibility of it breaking is DUMB. It reminds me of my old AT computer where none of the HD or Floppy or power connectors were keyed and you could plug them in backwards and mess up your computer bad.

Of course since this is Samsung we're talking about it's a non issue, and the customer's the idiot and the one at fault. Now if this had been Apple and ONE person reported this problem it would have been nothing but throwing dung at Apple for how how they don't QC any products and suck suck suck.

No, I'm pretty sure the pattern is the same for Apple or Samsung. There will be a crowd rushing to defend their company saying how it's a non-issue and it's the user's fault. There will also be a crowd shouting back that the company sucks and designs crap, etc.

The short answer: it's not a fatal mistake by any stretch, but it's still something you'd expect Samsung to catch. It's one thing to wreck your phone by dropping it... it's another when you can break it through a design quirk.

As an owner of these phones for many, many years it's just not something you'll do. I'm sure there will be hundreds of people affected legitimately this year, and their carrier/Samsung should step up.

One other note - the theme store really does make a big difference, moreso on Samsung devices than other ones. It's so much easier on the eyes using a Material or Material Dark theme vs. the stock teal theme. I scrolled through the available themes (I stopped after a couple dozen), downloaded it, and it took effect seamlessly in a few seconds.

Today I spent most of the day taking notes with the S-Pen. Was at a school so had zero reception inside, but currently at 35% with 4 hours and 45 minutes of screen on time. The battery life on this thing is pretty damn good.

It is a silly design decision. Just have the make the end of the stylus slightly too large. They may be able to fix it with a revised stylus.

I have to say the Note 5 is the best looking phone out right now.
Even at 5.7", it didn't feel too big for me but I can't justify spending $699 for one.
No way no how.
I will however settle for the slightly inferior Moto X when it comes out.
Being able to get the Moto X for $399 no tax vs $699+tax is a no brainer for me.
I say no tax because the Moto X is unlocked being sold at various retailers where I can only buy the Note 5 T-mobile version on T-mobile.
