I'm wondering if Trump and Putin are executing a Mafia style scam along the lines that one group threatens a country (e.g. Ukraine), the other group comes along and says "we'll protect you, but at a cost", then the two groups share the spoils.

I think I already observed that seems to be exactly what they are doing. Vance made the "protection racket" aspect of it quite explicit.

Russia's position is that there can be absolutely no guarantee of peace.
Spoilers, Russia has every intention of letting Trump support the invasion. And if that requires a temporary ceasefire - IT WILL BE TEMPORARY.
All they want is for Ukraine's Allies to abandon it so Russia's invasion would be made easier.

"Attack Ukraine harder" is Russia's only position at the so called "negotiating" table. Russians are not worth talking to. They need to be answered in blood.
