If Russia finds a decent offramp (dead Putin with a full withdrawal and a promise to 'redefine Russia') you might see a recovery of that country in 5-10 years. Without it, Russia is going to be a third-world nation a la Syria or Venezuela for 30 or more.

Which is not good for the rest of the world. unstable, third-world nation with thousands of nuclear warheads is not a world anyone is going to last in very long.

Yeah well the problem with that is there’s no such thing as a failed state with a good leader and functioning democracy. Can’t remove Putin and hand the reins over to a Medvedev or any of his sycophants or risk military coup. They’ll need a Marshall Plan package from the US/EU otherwise we’ll be in the same place 10-20 years from now.

My opinion is that the status quo is rolling over anyway. But. In terms of extermination of the human race, I must admit that I'd rather see planet earth under Putin rule than extinction of mankind.

I cannot fathom how any member of any military could possibly expect success in such a scenario. Modern armies would get defeated by goddamned ancient Romans in a situation like that.

Who's 'anyone' in this case though? Anyone on the outside with even a modicum of common sense, much less actual military experience, would be able to determine that this was a Very Bad Idea (tm). Anyone within their own military should have come to the conclusion that this would go very poorly if they literally don't tell anyone anything about what's going on until they're being shot at.

The difference is those planes would leave from say, Poland, and be easily tracked as coming from there. That's a more blatant escalation than random Javelin/Stinger that happens to be used outside Kyiv.

Poland "donates" a plane. Plane takes off from Poland into Ukraine. Plane is shot down by Russian S-400. They say it was Poland/NATO interfering and attacking them. Russia retaliates by attacking Polish airfield where flight originated. At said airfield are US and UK troops. US and UK respond by Tomahawk-ing Russian base that attacked ...

Javelin fired at Russian T72 outside Kyiv. Tank gets hit. Tankers die. No one else sees attack. No international incident.
