Seems like the game could be great if it wasn't so half-baked. For those who are unsure about Rome 2, wait a few months for the price to fall. The bugs have to be ironed out, the AI needs to be upgraded, and unit/campaign/battle balance has to be adjusted. It will take quite some time even if they release patches regularly.

My one sticky point is the narrow corridor-like map in many parts of Europe. No patch is going to fix that and I think it is way too linear for true strategic flexibility. Shogun 2's map was crammed but had open areas you could bypass. How does the Rome 2 map compare?

For a good time play Macedon and pump Athens and Sparta so full of cash that they become client states and watch in horror as the world turns against you.

I'm going to try this again, was probably the most insane crazy thing I've ever seen.

Also Sparta sucks, Macedon has vastly better unit composition and you don't even have to give up pikemen or phalanx units you just get to supplement them with far better units for a more mixed and well balanced military ;)

Didn't the recent patch do much good ?

It hasn't been officially released yet. The patch is still in beta. You can download it but I'm waiting until it gets fully released on Monday. But I've heard good things.

If it is your type of game then get it now while it is the new fad. I don't think it will drop in price for a good while yet.

A 33-50% sale during the Steam Christmas sale seems quite likely. But since Rome II retails for $60, and there's additional DLC that most people would agree is desirable... even a 50% sale would still cost about $35 which still seems steep to me. I'll probably hold out until next summer when ithe game is patched and the Summer Steam sale has it for ~$15 with DLC. But waiting 9+ months isn't really an issue for me considering the huge backlog of games I have on Steam, games I'll never get to in the next three years... let alone 9 months. :p

Not specifically you more curiousity; I don't own the game (yet) still need to play shogun 2 (which I do own) but i really liked rome; and had high hopes for this game.

I am not sure if you are replying to me, but I agree it is a good start. My point was that it will take several more patches like this before all the issues are dealt with.

My prediction is a 75% Holiday sale and then next Summer 50%. It will really depend on how well sales are. If they are good my prediction. If not then yours. So far they had more pre orders than for any other past game in all of the TW series. At least that's what I been hearing anyway. Hopefully you prediction is correct.

Naw - even the box version is frequently on sale (though the box version isn't much good since it is a steamworks game). I think I picked it up at newegg for some silly low price a while back.

On steam? Maybe they were trying to raise more money for building rtw2. It is back upto £25 on Steam.

Steam has frequent sales where they lower the price of games for a short while and then raise them back up after.

You just have to be patient and get the game during one of these sales, whether they are seasonal sales, daily sales, or weekend sales.

Check Amazon too. Got my copy from there for 8 bucks.

Put it on your steam wishlist. You'll get an email when its on sale.

I've been playing the beta patch. AI is much more aggressive with me now. Used to passively sit and wait for me to come goggle them up, but now its pre-emptively declaring war on me and attacking when I'm not ready.

Patch II is officially out. Fixed a lot of things for me.

I stopped playing for a while because the AI would constantly attack one of my walled cities with a fleet, land everyone, and then just sit on the beach until the timer went out. And I couldn't even bump up the speed because of the lag. This meant I could take one turn, and then have to wait an hour for the siege to get over before the next turn. Essentially, unplayable.

The patch fixed both the lag and lack of attack. Now the AI actually attacks. Not smartly. They all rush one gate so I can concentrate my forces. So I actually win the siege that I shouldn't if they landed at two different gates and the harbor. But at least it's playable and the lag is a lot better.

Great, so it's gone from unplayable to merely shitty. Even in Rome 1 the AI would attempt multiple approaches during a siege. I think a few more cycles of patches (or possibly a "we forgot the AI" "expansion") are in order before I even consider plopping $60 on it.

lol. I wouldn't say that, but there is hope. The added capture points really threw these guys a curve ball. I'm not giving them any remorse, actually, I am just wondering why they shot themselves in the foot with them. To top it off they had the AI programmers talk during interviews of how creative and ingenious they were in this idea, yet it is obvious to everyone the horrible execution of it.

The lead designer stated they should had a beta test...I guess they should if they're allowing their own team members to blow smoke up their asses like this lol.

At this point, I don't think they can justify 60 dollars now. Perhaps they should make the Greek States DLC free for everyone as an apology.

Nah, there are enough fanboys that will buy the game at 60 dollars. While I wait for a few months of patches, I will be playing some Hearts of Iron 3 / Darkest Hour.

Ha! How about that! That's precisely what I'm doing. :)

Are you using any of the expansions with HoI III? I'm using all of them, and considering trying the Black Ice MOD, and my God, it's a lot of fun. :)

I've always loved and been with the TW games from day 1, but the weakness of the AI (strategic and battle), bugs, and sometimes ridiculous simplicity is hard to get over after playing and enjoying deeper strategy sims.

HoI III is a bit of a learning curve for me, I like the sandbox and nation building aspects but do not enjoy the combat more than HoI 2's combat system, which was more intuitive. Darkest Hour is simply the most refined of the HoI 2 games. Maybe one day I will get more into HoI 3.

TW games have always been fun and even cutting edge in the early days of the franchise. But after Empire, the games are becoming repetitive and not breaking new ground. With core mechanics being damaged like Rome 2 is demostrating, not a good sign for Creative Assembly.

I had such high hopes for this game.
