Some of us had honest, hardworking parents that taught us it's wrong to steal from others.

So rationalize all you like scumbag thieves. If your warranty card prohibits running out of spec, and you can't tell the manufacturer that you did for that RMA, you're no better than a POS alterboy stealing out of the collection plate, or an insurance guy selling fake policies.

So, just to sure where you stand. Are you saying that if it turns out that nvidia's 6800 graphic chips do indeed have a defect and they can't get the Programmable video processor working correctly, anyone, such as myself, who overclocked their card for benchtesting should not turn the card in for replacement (if thats what it were to come to)?

The PVP issue is irrespective of this AFAIK. If your point is "they've voided the warranty so they can't return for PVP" I can't comment on that because I don't know if it's possible for clock speed to damage PVP.
If it is, I'd say, "No you can't return it". If it's not, I'd say you can.
Sort of like if you put out of spec tires on your car, why couldn't you do warranty for the fuel injection?

As far as this fluff
where does he stand? high on a pedastal it would seem from the way he pushes his superior morals and ethics all over the boards
goes:

WTH? What is "superior" about not stealing from people by fraud? Has our society sunk so low that not committing fraud makes a person a "goody two shoes" moralizer?!

Don't flame me for having ethics if you don't- there's no "gray area" here, if you don't tell the vendor/or manufacturer you OCd it and there warranty states OCing voids your warranty, you're a thief, plain and simple.

Why do you think I don't OC much? I know if I do, I can't return the card under warrant, and a couple points on 3dmark aren't worth $300-$500 to me, nor is being able to run a game one setting higher.

Nice post, I totally agree. Im good about accepting my mistakes in the sense that if i fry my board or card im gona live with it as it was noones fault but my own. However a good example is this 9550XT card I just picked up a week or so ago. I OC'd it initially to see if it would really do 9600XT speeds which it wont quite do, but it was only OC'd for a matter of hours and if it dies on me next week running @ stock id RMA it.....besides this card was made to be OC'd from the look of the HSF, to the marketing they use selling it as a lesser card.

Epileptic:
You are amazing. The card was "made to be OCd from the looks of the HSF"?

That's justification of warranty fraud if I've ever heard it- "I didn't tell them I OCd the card and might have damaged it because they put a big hsf on it!"

LOL

Alright. For the record, I had no knowledge of some of his prior posts about his OCs, and I didn't bother to search for them either, so it's possible that there is more to this story than my comments might reflect. I wasn't defending him specifically, just pointing out that I think this group "lynch mob" mentality might be going a bit too far, especially for a ban.

The lynch mob mentality is good. People used to post all the time about how they "were on their 3rd card, just can't find a good OCer" but you don't see that much.

This behavior adds to the manufacturers cost of doing business, and raises our prices.

This behavior makes stores with great return policies end up with re-stock charges and tight policies.

People need to speak out against this.

And if you think it has zero effect on chip lifespan, stability, etc., then so are you. And you didn't answer my questions about when it stops being 'ok' to RMA the card.

if this card dies it isnt because i OC'd it for an hour ok? its just not.....

But you can't *prove* that. Overclocking a chip puts more stress on the electrical components (resistors, caps, etc.), and can significantly increase the operating temperature (which itself does other things, like upping leakage currents). You have *no way* to know what the long-term effects are going to be in a particular circuit.

and the proof that my OC didnt lead to future failure will come in the future with the fact that the card isnt dead or dying or gona die its fine

Circular reasoning. You can't prove that a future failure *wasn't* caused by past overclocking/modification, which is what you're saying.

just like my softmodded 9500 OC'd for over a year running PERFECTLY so STFU already you busy bodies need a life. 30MHZ OVERCLOCK = VIDEOCARD DETH = SCUMBAG THIEVES!!!!1

Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to think that RMA procedures exist so they can live on the edge and not have to pay for it. Just because you don't care doesn't mean nobody else does, and I don't want to pay for your or anybody else's misadventures.

This thread is a useless flamebait.

You people have taken it upon yourselves do deal out punishments, you have taken it upon yoursleves to be moderators. Well its crap.

I am extremely offended by the theives remark and all the other snide remarks aimed at me. I presented my argument and nothing is undreasonable nothing is wrong. So just leave me along.

Im sorry to see AT forums go down like this but they are turning into one big flame war, with little regard for help anymore.

(I hope you guys are happy as i have started a thread and moved a motion to ban me so i dont have to deal with some of this crap anymore)

A slightly different angle that I haven't heard mentioned here yet.

Speed binning. All chips are speed binned aren't they? Memory, CPU, and GPU alike. They are clocked up as fast as they will run successfully, backed off a bit for headroom and reliability, and then given their listed clock speed. Basically, they are all overclocked by the mfr aren't they?

Let me add that I agree with Rollo. As far as the PVP on the 6800, I agree with Rollo about that, too.

Disappointing, to say the least, that the Mustang lover at NVN was able to scam BB out of another 6800GT. You'd think they could at least have their PC guys test the card to see if it was working.

We are helping you Kevin, we're helping you become a decent human being and see the error of your ways.

It's not too tough- you don't steal from people, drive up the cost of parts to the rest of us, and nobody will flame you.

If you publicly advocate theft, honest people are likely to publicly disagree?

BTW- you don't need to be banned to not come back? I don't know why you'd give up on the board though just because people don't agree with you saying you would steal under certain circumstances.

That's sort of true LTC8K6, but especially as the manufacture process of a chip matures they usually get better yields and higher quality chips, so sometimes they just clock much higher rated parts at a price point, which led to this whole situation.

Do you get off on patronizing others or what? Whether this one guy games BB doesn't affect you in any way. Why pretend, for the sake of public consumption, that it does? Someone please remind me what this forum is for again?

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here.

Rollo: Here's a hypothetical situation for you:

Say you sell your 6800NU to someone on FS/FT. A few months after they buy it from you, it blows up and they decide to RMA it. You modded and overclocked it, not them. Does that not make you just as hypothetically guilty as Gamingphreek?

A non-functional situation: ATI and nVidia won't warranty any "used" card; only the OP gets the warranty. ;)

The last time I RMA'ed a graphics card was my R8500; it died suddenly at work (non-overclocked). ATi never even asked me for a receipt, or if I was the original owner (which I was).

ATi sent me an 8500LELE which really pissed me off, but there's not much I can do about it.

A. Reference cards aren't warranted
B. If I ever sell that, I will tell the buyer I have both OCd it and unlocked it with Rivatuner. What the buyer does at that point is beyond my control.

WTF?

A LE for a "regular" 8500?!? :p

I'd have raised hell with ati ;)

Anyway - when i sent in my 8500-128MB this year -i got a new 8500-128MB back - to ATI for RMA they NEITHER asked me IF i was the original owner OR if i had O/C'd it (intel has a much "tougher" Q&A for their RMAs).

However, IF you volunteer information (they don't ask for), it is your "conscience" (since the Warranty clearly states "no o/c'ing" and "warranty for original purchaser").

. . . how many of us actually read the "fine print" when we buy HW?

You shouldn't have excepted it brudda. They either made a honest mistake or were chancing you wouldn't know the difference. You should have called and brought the mistake to their attention, the ages old "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" mentality. I'm fairly certain they would have worked it out with you had you done so. I realize it's a case of "water under the bridge" now but in the future <Ren Hoek> "Squeak! Squeak I tell you! Squeak!" :)

It won't make you feel any better but I've seen many posts on various MBs over the years stating that when RMAing a defective product the poster was sent a higher end replacement. We will get your Karma straightened out someday kid :clock::beer: <-----Canadian for you of course :)

As for the 8500, it's worth maybe $50, as an LELE it's worth maybe $40. It would be more hassle to re-RMA it than it's worth. These companies lose tons of money on these issues anyway; after all the RMA's I've done I figure it's good karma to just take my lumps.

i dunno, ati really treats you nice when they screw up . . . ;)

anyway, i only got $45 for my (almost new; returned from RMA) 8500-128MB . . . .

sometimes it is not worth it, i agree (unless you are stuck using the card)

Sickbeast- I will now improve your lot in life:
Go to a liquor store that sells a lot of kinds of beer. Ask for "barley wine style ale". Drink it, and try to resist the urge to post all over the web how "Rollo is my savior".

I'll check it out, thanks for the tip. :)

If you drink white wine you should check out "Black Tower". It's cheap and really nice stuff. :wine:

Not a wine man, gives me more of a hangover for some reason. (but thanks anyway!)
Barley wine brands:
Youngs Old Nick
Rogue Red Crustacean
Flying Dog Horn Dog
Old School
Old Foghorn
Old Tom
Sierra Bigfoot
Harvest 1999
Thomas Hardy
Flying Pig

Barley wine styles are aged a year and usually 8-12% abv, not brew you chug or drink many of. Actually, it's Thursday night and I'm taking off at noon tomorrow, so I think I'll have one now. ;)

Mostly I drink ales like the above and bourbon. (Mmmmmmm....Jim Beam Black......howwwwwnnnnnngggggg*......)

*Homer's "thinking of donuts" sound

Budwieser here is megacrap. I prefer Kirin, nukie brown *new castle* or a good microbrew. I will learn to make my own someday, I just never seem to grab the supplies and start....
