Hey, could you post your save game or send it to me? I'd love to start as a mage and you're probably pretty close to where I am at the moment. I couldn't stand starting over again.

Mem, you have been running Vista x64 Home Premium for a number of years now. I have the exact same motherboard and processor as you but with XP Pro with SP3 and two gigs of PC3200 RAM. And like you I haven't overclocked.

You run an ATI 4870 (I run a 9600GT). Now the EPoX 9NPA+Ultra is a socket 939 board which means it can't run the video cards that are PCI-e 2.0, only in backwards compatibility.

With all the newer games out have you noticed any draw back in playing said newer games, i.e., FPS, resolution, et.al.?

No issues(I play them all at 1920x1080),obviously using an old cpu you are limited to the max FPS speed you can get especially with new cards, btw I'm on Win7 x64 Ultimate now, however I had no issues either with Vista x64 when I started playing Risen.

I'm due for a full upgrade at some point, got the money but in no rush as they say so its a matter of when I want to upgrade.

I'm still sad Epox are no longer in the motherboard sector,my workhorse board(EPoX 9NPA+Ultra) is still going strong.

Update on my Risen gaming,I can tell you playing mage is fun and even using staff is not as bad as what people say, infact I don't even miss my sword and shield anymore since normally fireball attacks on the move is enough for most mobs, the monastry quests are interesting and I for one am glad I went mage.

I'm level 5 on staff skill and its quite good(especially if you got a good staff)...

Money is not an issue for me since I still have over 15k in gold even with 30 LP remaining and loads of loot in my inventory.

hmm I signed up with the don and just began chapter 2, but I did make a save file just before going with the don, so I may go back and try the mage route since I'm not super happy fighting with a sword and shield anyway

I would recommend changing to a mage. I was with the Don for a couple hours into chapter 2 before I realized I couldn't get any kind of magic. Mem was nice enough to send me his save game file before he entered the monastery (thanks mem!) and I have since gone through all the monastery quests and I am very happy I switched. I really think the story was made to follow the path of the order, and really caters to the mage overall.

The first thing I did after mem's save game was go back to harbor town and rob everyone blind! I think I'm OCD to make sure I steal every item available. I'm still trying to figure out how mem had 17k in Gold at this point, I was only hovering at about 5k.

I can't decide which magic skill to invest all my points in. Since I'm level 5 in staff I'm thinking of just going the frost route and freezing enemies and then laying down the old staff beat down.

Good thing about fireball attacks is you can do group damage to the mobs with one fireball if they are all close enough so I'm happy going fireball route,I do hear from chapter 3 it gets harder so spend or save your LP wisely.

As to 17k that was easy enough I jut stayed in chapter 1 and saved most of my LP for a very long time and was looting, stealing everything, hence loot monkey :).

I screwed up and overwrote my savegame I hadbefore commiting to the don, now I'll have to go way back to be a mage, which sounds like more fun, but I'll have a lot of repeating to do sadly

Mem what do you mean after chapter 3 it gets harder? I'm planning on spending every LP from now on in whatever magic crystal I choose to level 10.

At their forums I saw a post that said it gets a bit harder from chapter 3,however mage should have no problems with serious magic power,I'm still in Chapter 2 at the moment.

Are you enjoying the fireball? I've been reading today and it looks like frost isn't the way to go because it takes to long to switch to melee between casts. It looks like fireball overall is more powerful and uses less mana than magic bullet, but is slower.

Fireball was originally last on my list but it seems like I may go with it after all.

So how is the game in turns of stability, bugginess? I remember playing Gothic 3 at release and it was horrid. HORRID!

I'm playing through as a bandit with sword fighting and bows, no magic. Don't know.. i've never really been into magic in any of the other Gothic games, so I figure why change for this one. I wonder if you can play through the mage story line and still put all your points into sword fighting and bows.. anyone know?

The more fireball skill level you go up from 1 to 10 the speed(recast) and more damage it does,I'm at level 5 at the moment.

The performance it much better. It's essentially G3 with all of the latest community patches applied plus some added visuals and a better combat system. The world seems a bit smaller than G3, but it's still rather large and filled with loads of content like caves, ruins, large towns, side quests, etc..

One tip I can give all players is Alchemy level 3 is a must have, permanent strength ,mana, hit point potions are very handy, just make sure you don't eat those permanent stat herbs you find since you need them for the potion ingredients.

Not sure if there are any permanent wisdom receipes around but if anybody knows let us know.

If you enjoyed Gothic, yes it is a good game. If you haven't played gothic or aren't used to the German style RPG, it may be a bit of an acquired taste, but is certainly a good game.

As Alienwho stated closes comparison is probably Gothic games so if you have played any Gothic games then that gives you a good idea, its a polished game for a retail release and nowhere near the bug fest Gothic 3 was.

Stability of the game is just excellent.

Update on my mage ,he now has level 7 fireball and is kicking ass :).

Yeah I'm level 7 fireball as well and level 2 rune.

Right now I'm going around and finding the buried chests and dead skeleton rings and generally exploring along the way. I found a cave behind a waterfall and cleared it out and found a badass double handed sword that does like 80 damage.

I'm looking for the summon skeleton rune and the speed rune right as well, but I need like 40 more wisdom before I can use them.

I just had a nice fight with Elite Lizards, nothing fireballs can't kill ;).

Is it me or is this game fucking hard? Combat is a bitch. I've changed it to easy and even then a fucking farmers wife takes away at least a third of my health bar....with a broom. She takes about 5 hits to go down. Never had this problem in the gothic series.

I don't really like the combat to be honest. Plus the game seems pretty stale...as in, seen it all before in the gothic games. Plus the world is tiny compared to previous gothic games. Hopefully it gets better.
