(Reuters) - Intel Corp's next-generation Broadwell processors will ship in time to be used in personal computers sold during the holiday season but probably won't be available for back-to-school shopping, Chief Executive Brian Krzanich said.

Speaking to Reuters at the Maker Faire in San Mateo, California, on Saturday, Krzanich said that following setbacks implementing new manufacturing technology, announced last October, Intel is on schedule to ship its Broadwell chips to PC manufacturers.

The timing of new chip rollouts is important to Intel and manufacturers looking to sell new PCs with better battery life and higher speeds.

"I can guarantee for holiday, and not at the last second of holiday," Krzanich said in an interview. "Back to school - that's a tight one. Back to school you have to really have it on-shelf in July, August. That's going to be tough."

Krzanich's comments were more precise than during Intel's most recent quarterly conference call with analysts in April. On that call, he said he expected Intel's customers to launch Broadwell-based products in the second half of 2014.

The back-to-school season around August, when parents sometimes buy new PCs for their children, has provided smaller sales bumps for PC makers in recent years than in the past, but the November/December U.S. holiday season is still viewed as a key opportunity to sell consumer electronics.

Story is from yesterday, so these comments are recent. Not sure if this includes desktop LGA processors, but I view it as exciting nonetheless. Should be interesting to see how new ultrabooks based on Broadwell-Y/U and macbooks fare.

Good stuff. Hopefully Broadwell should make fanless tablet/convertibles possible without dropping down to Atom.

Wait... what? Until yesterday I thought they were going to release BW in november/december at most, why the sudden jump ahead of 4-6 months? Better battery life so Y/U versions?

What BK said doesn't really contradict that. I'd probably say close to Black Friday and yes only the U/Y models.

Only U/Y models? We don't know that. He didn't say that. We don't know. There are more mobile chips than just U/Y, the non U/Y BGA versions could well be available as well. And it would make sense for them to be available, if the U/Y chips are.

His statement was "broadwell will be available for holidays 2014, and not at the last minute"

so they could well arrive in September or October. He stated back to school season might [probably] will not happen, but definitely holidays. And probably early for the holidays. I do think the desktop variant will be released later, because the Haswell mobile chips are long in the tooth now for OEMs while Haswell refresh/DC is just released. But, this is information that is neither confirmed and is unknown. I'm sure they COULD release Broadwell for desktop if they wanted, but i'm just not sure what variants they would release.

In any case, Haswell was a pretty amazing product for performance related mobile products with high battery life - the macbook airs are getting over 12 hours on a charge. Broadwell will be even better than that, so i'm fairly excited about it.

Well... Intel never specified anything beyond H2 2014. Intel started volume production toward the end of in Q1, so availability around the end of Q3 isn't too spectacular. But I guess this won't be LGA because Haswell refresh is just released, so that's disappointing. Nonetheless, if BK still views July and August as a possibility, if we take September as launch of Broadwell, that means there's a delay of 3 months between Haswell, which is interesting because if Intel hadn't had yield issues, Broadwell would have arrived exactly 1 year after Haswell. This would also imply a delta of 28 months after 22nm (Ivy Bridge), or a 14 months average for Haswell+Broadwell.

If Intel doesn't screw up with bad yields next time, this gives me confidence that 10nm will arrive at most 2 years after Broadwell. All 'conspiracy theories' of Intel going to a 18 month release cycle seem to be flawed.

We know it from Roadmaps. We might see only Y-Broadwell devices in stores this year.

As far as i'm concerned, if that's true, cool. I thought mobile Haswell was fairly amazing from a performance per watt and battery life standpoint, so i'm very interested to see how much better Broadwell does in terms of battery life. The core i5/i7 mobile Haswell SKUs had great battery life - this does depend on the vendor obviously, since battery life can vary between different models but overall, it was pretty impressive. macbook airs were pushing past 12 hours. I suspect Broadwell will be an evolution beyond that.

I'm curious as to whether the U/Y core i5's will have Iris Pro as a graphics option. I don't think Iris Pro will be limited to a sole halo SKU as it was with Haswell.

Yeah, really. Unless there's a source that says Broadwell is Apple only, and there isn't, just stop with the intentionally misleading speculation.

Personally if I had a contract with Apple I would move mountains for them because Apple = $. But that being said. Stop posting speculative nonsense. Haswell was available to OEMs at the same time last year including Apple. There is no reason to suggest that Broadwell is apple only. Apple isn't the only high volume seller, of course the likes of Lenovo among others sell a ton of chips for intel. And intel is a for profit corporation, so i'm sure where they can, they will sell.

So what's all the excitement about? He's confirming some Broadwell models will be released in 2014Q4. I.e. as has been communicated before by Intel (or actually he's now confirming it's likely to be Q4 and not Q3, where as before he said just H2).

So just as in the roadmaps previously leaked:

He says July and August are probably too early, so September seems like a good guess.

No, he says that back to school season (August) is too early, but that it will definitely be available in time for the holiday season (November/December). Where you got September from, I really don't know...?

To me that means September or October.
