Depends on the weapon :) In any case, he was emptying cartridges :D Some of those old guns indeed used clips, most famously the M1 Garand. Many soldiers complained about them, after firing the last round, the thing would eject with an audible 'ping', which could be ... undesirable.

Clips load magazines, the guns are always loading new rounds from the magazine.

For the M1 Garand you had en bloc clips, which were inserted into the magazine (and then pop out at the end like you described, with the PING):

And for something like a Mosin Nagant you had stripper clips which strip off the rounds into the magazine (but the clip itself isn't inserted into the magazine), and then the clip is discarded:

(those are actually rounds I've got loaded up to shoot out of the 1942 Mosin Nagant 91/30 that I own :awe:)

No mg42 yet for me, but I did have the MG 34 on barracks at the start of a round, and it spawned me on the allied side of the map for some reason. I immediately set the thing up and mowed down 10 people as they ran across the street before I ran out of ammo and got picked off.

I know it was cheap because it was a glitch in my spawn, but moments like this make the game great.

I've had the spawn glitch happen to me once so far. I was running with a large group of Russians and thought "oh I guess I got switched to the other team." Nope, I was still a German and I was shot to pieces.

Do you collect? I used to have a 91/30. Right now I've got a 1944 M44 (the carbine version of the 91/30...it was in RO1 but I haven't seen it in RO2 yet) and I've got a 1937 Kar98 in great condition with eagles intact. It's cool playing RO and then going "oh, I've got that gun."

I was reading about this game on RPS and it sounds kind of cool. Never played the first one; is it worth getting the first game before trying this one?

Don't bother. Even though it's a great game, I imagine everyone is moving onto Red Orchestra 2 now. Especially seeing as it will provide the same mod-ability and community as the original, if not more, so everyone will happily oblige. Plus, the original RO is quite dated now (2006), and visually speaking, it looks even older.

Also... I could make a huge, profane, rage-induced post about this, but I understand RO2 is in beta, and I love the game for the most part, so I'll be brief and civilized:

They need to fix the hit registration. Seriously... fix it. When I shoot an enemy soldier in the chest with my bolt-action rifle from five feet away, not moving whatsoever, with my iron sites directly on top of him, they should die. Or they should be extremely injured. Or SOMETHING. I've been getting extremely frustrated with this lately. Half of the time it works. Half of the time it doesn't. Lag isn't an excuse either, since absolutely no one is moving. That 100% SHOULD register as a hit.

I'm glad to see this is a fairly widespread issue, so I know I'm not the only one. Apparently shooting enemies with rifles at extremely close range just misses for no apparent reason. I've raged at this far too many times. Why do some of my shots just simply not register? Ugh.

Other than that, this game fucking rocks. Carry on.

Will this game have a single player campaign?
Is it too realistic-it-gets-boring a la ARMA?
Will my rig run it fine?

It will have single player, and no the infantry combat in this game is how arma should have been. It will not get boring, and I can run the game fine on my laptop that only has a 6770m.

Some of the aim/registration issues fix themselves as you level up your weapons and classes. However I think alot of the registration issues have to do with people running 64 player servers on boxes that can't handle the load.

Yes it will have a singleplayer campaign that I believe can also be played cooperatively.

It's realistic, but nothing like ARMA. The combat is fairly fast, fluid, and visceral.

Your 6850 should be okay. Don't expect to max it out completely, though.

While it's billed as a realistic WWII shooter, it's far from being a simulator like Arma. It still plays very much like a game.

I don't think this makes sense, and I don't buy it at all. Maybe if I was firing from the hip, or maybe if I was firing from extremely long range. But I'm talking about encounters I've had where the enemy is literally five feet in front of me, I have my iron sights directly on them, and I fire into their chest. I've missed these way too many times. There's no way it could be level-based. Not to mention, I've leveled up the main Allies bolt-action rifle (the MN1931 or something) up to level 10 now.

However I think alot of the registration issues have to do with people running 64 player servers on boxes that can't handle the load.
This makes more sense to me. As enraging as it is, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until the game is released next week.

@LessThanDan

I've encountered a hit detection issue regarding lag many times. There will be an occasion where an enemy appears to be standing still and I fire directly at him, when in reality he's already running toward me or in some other direction but it hasn't registered for me yet due to lag. I always end up dying when that happens. This is more prevalent on 64 player servers.

I would if I had the money, but I'm in college right now so I don't :( One of my friends has a K98 that his Grandpa gave to him. He picked it up in France during WW2 and brought it back here, me jealous :awe:

I don't think the M44 would be in RO2 since it's supposed to be only set in the battle of Stalingrad. The M38 might though, and it's basically the same thing without the folding bayonet AFAIK.

Yeah, the M38 would make sense. I keep forgetting the game is restricted to 1942-43. However, Tripwire is putting prototype/field-test weapons in the game. For example, the STG44 isn't in the game, but the Mkb42 (field-tested prototype of the STG44) is definitely in the game. So, since the M44 was field-tested in 1943, we might see that as an option (only because of the kickass bayonet!).

How is the artillery working out? Or mortars, whatever?
As far as I know, the commander can either spot his own targets using his binocs or accept targets from squad leaders. To call in artillery or mortars, he has to be by a radio, which are scattered around caps.

I've only played commander once for a few minutes and called in some mortors but had to take a dump, sooo who knows if I hit anyone.

I've been blown to pieces by arty a few times.

It's BF2 style arty and not player fired?

One does not simply walk into Mortor.

Getting 50 kills in the countdown game mode is hilariously awesome. Just went like 50-4, and even with the mature tactical community people still cry hacks haha.

It's very similar. Commanders as far as I know can't simply just click on a point on the map and start throwing arty at it like you could in BF2. You have to specify the location by your own binocs or a squad leader's target. That, and you have to have a radio nearby. It's not player fired artillery.

Server browser is even more messed up that it was before, but hit detection seems a lot better.

When you go to join a server do not double click it because you will join a random server. Highlight it and then hit connect on the bottom right corner of the screen to get in a server.

Also, new maps again and they are all awesome. This game reminds me of COD:UO back in the day. Truly the best cod game ever made. Gives me the same feeling, but this game is far more advanced than UO was. Loving it so far.

^^^that right there makes me tingle.

COD UO was by far the best/most complete WW2 FPS ever created, and by far the best COD game.

I can't wait to play red orchestra 2......
