Generally 'overrated' is understood to mean rated too highly, not rated too frequently. Of the people that have rated Dream Theater, Dream Theater is rated too highly.

But actually, I'll change my mind and say Tool instead. At least the first few Dream Theater albums are really good.
 
Most technically proficient bands are generally overrated. I get it, Steve Vai and the likes can shred super fast. Just because they have great skill doesn't make their music great.

It's tiresome, and not very musical. It's the aural equivalent of watching a rubiks cube master, or an exceptional typist. Once you get past "that's pretty cool", there's no more interest.

Well everyone knows Brian Wilson was a master in production and a gifted songwriter and even Paul McCartney admitted the Beatles used some of his production techniques making "Sgt Pepper" some of the early Beatles songs were still pretty damm good IMHO, like these,

And anyone who didn't see the Grateful Dead play live with Garcia isn't really qualified to comment. In the late 70's/early 80's they could really play but its fair to say they never were an exceptional studio band.


Yes, ELP & in particular Rush are if anything under-rated in terms of talent and musical innovation.

I kind of agree with the Grateful Dead. They were musically talented, but I think a lot of the appeal was to the culture surrounding the band. Those who remember how awesome they were from having gone to their concerts forget that they were stoned out of their minds when they were at the concerts. 😛

A Cure song came on the radio eariler today - I'd also call them an over-rated group who had a strong following. Again though, it seemed to be a cultural thing.

As with your other examples, I feel Kiss was really a cultural things and their fame was only furthered by great marketing. What better way to snag rebellious youth than comic books?
