Wow, this is pretty fucked up. I have a Social Security account, but discovered years ago I had to change my PW every 6 months. I just tried to login and it said it was transitioning to login.gov accounts and I am creating one. It used 2 step verification via email for me then wanted me to set up at least one verification method for future sign-ins, preferably 2 methods. I set up texting, the others look iffy at best. I tried setting up calling my landline for the 2nd, but the call isn't coming. Bleh! It threatens to delete your login.gov account if you can't verify.

Hoops within hoops within hoops.

If they put every SS recipient through this kind of process they are going to get a lot of blowback.

Edit: No call came to verify a 2nd time. When the 10 minute countdown timer showed 50 seconds left I clicked again to get a call and one came and I entered the code on my computer. It said the timer had timed out and authentication FAILED! One of the open screens prompted me to enter my SS credentials including SSN, DOB, etc. Did all that and then it said I'd successfully linked my SS account and my newly created login.gov account. It prompted a new verification via phone call (confusing because it provided only my SS account phone, which is a land line and said texting/phone charges may apply (I can't get a text on my landline, of course), but I had no choice but to try it and a call did come through with a verification code.

Boy, there's gonna be trouble.
Decided to do it for my dad..

Was greeted with: You last signed in on July 27, 2018

Thankfully still had an ID.me login.. but yes everything expressed in the OP I went through back then for him when I changed his method of getting a check to direct deposit.

I would definitely change from a check to a direct deposit if you haven't already by now!
I've been getting DD SS checks for years now. ID.me I didn't know about, saw it as an option, but did the _recommended_ create login.gov account instead. Did NOT go smoothly, but managed to create the account anyway... apparently OK, but wouldn't be surprised if something isn't OK what with the kludgy semi-functional system they have up right now.

Also just tried the old style login and waiting for the code for over 2 minutes now. Nothing.
Went back, retried with ID.me, this time it connected back to SSA and the reply was basically we can't respond at the moment!!!!!!

I waited to almost the 10 minute deadline and clicked to have yet another call and it DID come, entered and it said timed out! YMMV!

So far I received two calls. LCD recipient wasn't something sensible like Login.gov, first was New Jersey and the other Washington D.C. Expecting the calls, I answered them, of course, but wasn't sure it wasn't illegitimate until I answered.

Given what I'd seen, I didn't expect competency and I didn't get it.

Thing is I also did that and got a code, then it told me, you've changed to ID.me. So I tried ID.me again and got me into the SSA site but then it said it couldn't do anything. Maybe I will try on a workday since who knows who's actually working with the moral there.

I have not done anything with ID.me. I was prompted to set up an account at login.gov. It was complicated, very complicated, but somehow, seems to have been accomplished.

ID.me was a nightmare to setup due to my horrible ability to take pictures with my cellphone of my drivers license.
Anyway, I couldn't wait, and I did get in and downloaded my statement. So it's still up and running, although I never had any glitches before. Maybe, recipients are freaking out and doing what we are doing.

People reporting the site is still down after 9AM ET, inside the window it's supposed to be on.
The hours aren't some recent rule change.
I knew years ago that they shut down their online
hours at night. I just didn't know the specific hours.

I went through all this sometime after 10PM, Eastern time. Do the stated hours refer to the user's local time, or DC time?

READ THIS!! Social Security login

OK, I have had a Login ID on login.gov for years, primarily because I use it to access my Veteran Administration information and benefits.

I have used it in the past to also access my Social Security account, in fact once I finally got login in, it shows I had last logged in, in December 2024.

Watched a YouTube about the changes that if you don't have a verified login by 3/31/25 you must show up in person at a Social Security office to prove your identity. Thought no big deal, I know I've logged into SSA many times, in addition to the VA, but let me log in again just to verify it works. Fuck me, it required many steps to again prove my identity.

From everything I had seen, having a login.gov Login ID should be all you need.

This is all from memory, as I was interested in just verifying everything was working, not documenting the steps necessary.

Did my Login ID thing, got prompted for it to send a 6-digit one-time code to my phone to then enter. I received it on my cellphone, entered it on my computer, and it got me to the next step (which should have been the SSA site, but it wasn't).

Next I told me that I needed a smartphone with a camera, and it would send a link to the smartphone. I verified the phone number, and it sent me the link.

Opened the link, and it told me to take a picture of my identification in the site that opened on the phone. Prompted through taking a picture of the front and back of my driver's license, then it told me to take a selfie. Gives a red circle where your face should be. Once it was happy with all 3 pictures, it had me submit. It took a minute or so and said ID verified, and go back to the computer.

Back on my laptop, it again wanted to send a one-time code to my phone. It came up with my phone number, then said it did not recognize the number. (This is the same number I just received the 6-digit one-time code, and the link to the site to submit photos of my driver's license and my selfie) You have 4 tries, or you have to wait 6 hours to try again. Another option to receive the code is to have a voice call, provide the one-time code. Since I still have a home phone, I entered that number, and did receive the call. It read off a 10-digit code, which I entered, and it accepted it.

I could finally access the SSA site after going through all this.

This is some screwed up shit...
Can we get the links for the blog and link for my social security into the first post? Maybe even a brief summary of what to do.

I setup login.gov for global entry a few years ago so that worked flawlessly.

1. Create a login.gov or id.me account and validate identity. Setup 2 factor authentication. This might optional.
2. Go to ssa.gov and use the sign in option. It will prompt for login. After login, it will prompt to setup your SSA access account if needed.
3. Go to view statement. Revel in the monies you will get paid when you are old.
4. Download your statement as pdf or csv or both.
5. Rest a little easier (maybe) while dumbshits screw up our government.

Next step: close almost all the SSA field offices, only leave the ones in some remote buttfuck corner of a state open, justify it by saying "well this is the location with the least amount of 'fraud'".

We all know how the game is played.

fuck you leach

F'elon and all our greedy oligarch billionaire friends want YOUR money.
We will get it with tariffs, by making it very difficult to vote against us, by making it really hard to get your benefits.

Looking back in my archived password database, I have had a login.gov account since February 2023. I have used it for both the VA and SSA in the past.

However, last night, it no longer worked for SSA until I jumped through all the hoops in post #1 of this thread. One can only surmise they are fucking with what has worked in the past.

My experience mirrors yours right up until you had all the weirdness.

After prodding, I finally got the wife to set up her login.gov so she could access her SS account. She had never logged into either, as she got hers all setup over the phone, years ago.

Completely different experience than I had, never had to submit pictures of her driver's license or selfie.

She's not a computer whiz, but a competent user and used a computer at work before she retired, but still needed a little "guidance". I will now find something to do in a different part of the house for a while, to give us both a little space. By design, me maw doesn't stand a chance.

And even on the SSA site, things display differently. If I click on "check earnings records" it takes me to a screen where I can download a PDF document. Her account, it just displays her earning record on the screen, with no option to download a PDF. So ctrl-P and save as PDF.

When I setup my ID.me account several years they were still using those old weird questions from some master security database that only I could answer to authenticate me. “What was the color of your car in 1999.”

This is not a new issue. I have had many friends get wrapped up in the same crap that is going on in this thread since later in 2024.

IDMe (https://www.id.me/) is a Private Company. Login.gov was jointly developed by 18F and the US Digital Service.

Login.gov (https://login.gov/) is a government made service that replaced Connect.gov login service.

See this thread:

Back in Sept 2024 I was told by a friend they are changing the system to require a Login.gov or an IDMe account to verify your identity to login was coming. So I tried setting up an IDMe account and got the upload a picture etc... run around which failed, and I said fuck that. Created a Login.gov account with no picture etc required easy as pie. and have been using it since with no issues.
