We don't need to log in or create an account unless we are applying for benefits or changing our direct deposit bank correct?

You don't have to no. You don't have to even if you are applying for benefits or changing your direct deposit bank. But if you don't have a My SSA Account you will need to go to a SS Office to verify your Identity when you applying for benefits or changing your direct deposit bank...

Or if you want to check on your account.
They used to mail out those totals every year, but haven't done so for years.
Many years ago I found mistakes in my contributions that I would not have known about had I not started checking.

After prodding, I finally got the wife to set up her login.gov so she could access her SS account. She had never logged into either, as she got hers all setup over the phone, years ago.

Completely different experience than I had, never had to submit pictures of her driver's license or selfie.

She's not a computer whiz, but a competent user and used a computer at work before she retired, but still needed a little "guidance". I will now find something to do in a different part of the house for a while, to give us both a little space. By design, me maw doesn't stand a chance.

And even on the SSA site, things display differently. If I click on "check earnings records" it takes me to a screen where I can download a PDF document. Her account, it just displays her earning record on the screen, with no option to download a PDF. So ctrl-P and save as PDF.
The goal is supposed to be make the process sensible, consistent, efficient in designing a system for users, particularly unskilled users but it's the opposite with the henchmen who are doing Trump's dirty work here in attempting to make life difficult for SS recipients.

I think that is correct... but what about when bank A merges with bank B and the routing and transit number or your account number changes?

All my banking is through the State Employees Credit Union, which I feel is very safe and solid, however shit happens, regulations change, and I would like to know I could update this information without having to schedule an in person appointment, at a distant field office, months away, and forfeit a month or two payments.

PS, I actually have more trust in my credit union's stability and security than I would with a major bank to fuck with my money, or simply close my accounts for no reason. Reason? Big banks want as much of my money as they can justify, Credit Unions are there to "serve" members.

OH. Didn't know that. So, what I went through yesterday was for nothing? AFAIK, my checking account is solid and I get a SS check DD'd monthly.

I was asking for confirmation because of Allisolm's post on page one. Not that I don't trust what she shared but both myself and a family member are on SS and neither of us can afford to miss a check. https://forums.anandtech.com/thread...5-social-security-login.2628867/post-41424463

Someone else posted a topic about logging in and getting your data before Musk starts messing around with the system. It may be worth doing that just to be safe.

so if we're nowhere near social security age....still worth doing all this?
As I posted above. Checking for mistakes.
I had one employer, years back that I assume never turned in my FICA money as the SS year end totals showed no contributions for 4 years. Zero wages earned. When I called SS over this they had me mail copies of my W2s for those years. It took a few months but SS made everything correct.

Basically check to see if the amounts correspond to your wages/W2s.

Remember, shit happens.

Had an issue. Since I changed phones and used Microsoft Auth it would not bring over any previous set ups. When re-creating manually I could not get back in Login.gov to do it.

Had to delete the entire account, reset up with Google Auth for Login.gov tied to email so I will never lose it again.

Now SSA says I have two accounts and cant use same Login. Granted its only been 36 hours.

I'm an Expat, and the last time I went through accessing via login.gov I had to coordinate with my sister in the states with her mobile as the login.gov doesn't accept foreign mobiles. No I need to check again.
I'm still 9 years out from retirement but keep checking the page every now and then to look for any significant changes.

I was able to successfully sign in to the SSA site using my login.gov account. At first it gave "This service is not available error" but a second try logged in fine. "Whew!"

I just tried to sign in, and got redirected to a page telling me to try again during business hours, with a list of hours in Eastern time. That seemed weird, so I tried again, and this time got redirected to this page, the URL is interesting. I don't seem to be able to access any kind of functioning login page. I last logged in on 2/14/2025 and downloaded my Social Security statement.

Thanks. I printed out my SS statement the other day (3/29/35), just downloaded the PDF of it, all via access to my newly created www.login.gov account.

Taking a look at the arstechnica article (haven't finished it), was aware of some of this, in particular Leon's claim that there are 150 YO SS check receivers. It would be trivial to run a report to give a total of said 150+ YO people so entitled and receiving. Evidently Leon's not game for it because the result would be trivial or zero.

It does make sense to DL your statement now in case they screw up their proposed rush-rewrite of 60 million lines of mostly COBOL SS code in some other language(s). Odds of a major screwup are not insubstantial.

Your statement (XML or PDF) may not help you get your check in the short term but could eventually help if the SS system goes haywire.

I logged in a few minutes ago. I had an old SSA login. I had to set up a login.gov account. That went smoothly. I had to update my cell number and that also worked with no issues. I downloaded my current statement. Everything seems to be working at the moment. I'm a youth so not eligible to apply for benefits so I didn't try that. I wasn't asked for proof of anything.
I too had my old SSA login. Had it probably 20 years or more when I was looking for errors that I did catch.
Posted in a previous post about it.

Now today it took my old login but said I have to create a login.gov account.
Set it up pretty easily and it seems to be working fine.

Just logged into ssa.gov with my ID.me userid and i'm seeing this. I logged in a few minutes ago and got in but they said my benefit information is not available. People are reporting that they did not receive their SS ACH deposits as scheduled or receiving them on a different day. As a retired IT operations tech who used to work in this type of mainframe based enviroment I expected musk and his DOGE boys were making mass changes to the SS databases and changes to SS websites on the fly without testing and would cause massive failures. I was correct. SSA core transactional online and batch processing still uses COBOL programs running on the mainframe systems. All of the "problems" the DOGE boys found were not a problem and were already known from IG audits but it cost to much to change so they didn't. Maybe it's a good thing because all of those MAGA boomers getting SS are going to get pissed and hopefully turn the midterms around.

Since I logged in through ID.me yesterday, they sent me a survey. I told them the first time I got a page not found error when it attempted to return to the SSA site. When I tried it again later, it worked though. Probably an SSA site problem.

My SSDI ach DD has hit my bank on the third of each month for the last 15 years. The only automatic withdrawal I have set up is with my mortgage on the 4th of each month. I will know if there's not a pending deposit on the 2nd…

Of course I always keep a balance above that just in case. But it wasn't for this fucking case!

My bank is Huntington and they do early deposits for direct deposits so my SSDI hit my checking account today.

When we saw people playing the payday waiting game, we found a way to make payday come early.

If you have a Huntington checking account with direct deposit, you could get your pay up to two days early. No cost. No catch.

If we receive your direct deposit information from your employer prior to payday, we will make your money available to you when we receive it, up to two days early. It’s that simple. No need to sign up. If you qualify, you will automatically receive your pay early††.
