Rant: Laid off today...

My position was terminated because the company is heading in another direction. I was brought on as a mechanical engineer to oversee design and production of their products. We joined up with another company last year, with the idea that they would take over the production aspect of the business. I've worked with them throughout the year and I guess my company feels they know enough to take over design and production. That company even told my company they were looking for engineers like me to hire, and have reached out to me to see if I would be a fit in their company. Unfortunately, they are located in Pittsburgh and I have no desire to move away from family.

This all comes while I am searching for a home to purchase in a slow real estate market. Unless I find another job soon, I probably won't be able to get a mortgage. To top it all off, I am living at my parents house because the house I was renting had mold in it that the landlord did not want to take care of.

So I am a single, jobless 27 year old living with my parents. :\

Been jobless twice, hope you have some money stashed away while you look for work. At least your expenses are not skyhigh. Imagine if you had a mortgage to pay now.
 
Hang in there man. You're fortunate to be in that situation at a young age and single. If you had mouths to feed and a mortgage to pay, things would be much worse. Just remember this experience and work on keeping some savings in the bank in case it happens again down the road.

Good luck finding something new. Maybe hit up RIT and see if they have any quick leads from recruiters.

I actually have quite a bit stashed away, that I had planned on using for a down payment for the house. I am still getting paid for 4 weeks because I agreed to let them contact me with any questions they might have. I also have stock options that fully vested on 12/31/14 that should net me ~$5k, if I read the paperwork correctly.

But you're right, I am lucky because my parents don't allow me to pay them rent nor help out with the bills. The only monthly bill I have is student loans.

I live in Rochester, NY. Not sure how the job market is, but I guess I'll be finding out soon.

take those negatives and make them positives. The fact your at home gives you tremendous flexibility to take a job anywhere you like. This could be a time to get some savings or define your long term goals.

This is why I cannot recommend to young people to purchase a home, not in a nomadic work environment where you might have to move at a moments notice. You should have taken the Job in Pittsburgh and rented something. You need to be able to move and work where the work is at.
 
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Why not try the pittsburg move? You are young and have no responsibilities right now. Do it!
 
Sorry to hear - I am sure you will find something.

The 'good' news is that you don't have any obligations (not even rent!). Imagine being in this position with a mortgaged house and a family.
 
Not wanting to move is going to limit you a lot.

I'm an engineer like you, and searching for a new job. I get spammed like you would not believe by recruiters for jobs (granted, in places I would not move to).

You're single, have no commitments... Why won't/can't you leave your family? You're 27 dude, time to branch out from the nest.

Thats why I don't get. He is free and single, now is the time to take the risks, see the world a little. You need to get out there and make your mark.
 
OP - Are you even paying for school debt still? Quit crying over spilled milk. And quit crying over having to move for a job. That's why everyone is on welfare today, no one wants to move, they want jobs to magically fall into their own laps.

Back in the day when shit didn't work out in a town families packed their shit and headed out. Where? Who the fuck knew and who cared? They just headed out.

Same boat. Company I worked for went tits up when our investor pulled out. Right before the holidays too so I kinda took some time off for reflection and to deal with some personal issues that were holding me back. Hiring is always slow in Q4 anyway.

Getting back into things full steam this week. I've switched tactics and started direct snail mailing applications to hiring managers. Resumes tend to get sucked into a black hole when you email HR or go through online portals. LinkedIn will be your best friend in a job search.

If the job opportunity in Pittsburgh is good (ie the money is right), consider it. You have to go where the work is these days.
