OP - Are you even paying for school debt still? Quit crying over spilled milk. And quit crying over having to move for a job. That's why everyone is on welfare today, no one wants to move, they want jobs to magically fall into their own laps.

Back in the day when shit didn't work out in a town families packed their shit and headed out. Where? Who the fuck knew and who cared? They just headed out.

Why be a butt? He's not crying and getting canned from your job and having to move back to your parent's house isn't "spilled milk."

Unfortunately, they are located in Pittsburgh and I have no desire to move away from family.
So you refused to move to where you had a job lined up?

Your parents are idiots.

He's not crying and getting canned from your job and having to move back to your parent's house isn't "spilled milk."
That's the point, he doesn't HAVE to move back;the nit-wits are LETTING him move back because he doesn't want to be away from mommy and daddy.

Disgusting.

this. i would have taken the Pittsburgh job. employers don't like seeing gaps in your employment history. They prefer to pilfer from other companies. They see people who are not working as the "undesirables"

Absolutely. And the older you get in a tech job the worse; Though Mech'Es have it better than programers, there's definite age discrimination. Perhaps he'll be able to argue that he's young enough for the position because his mom still washes his underwear.

Fly the mom out once a year so she can do this for sandwiches all year: freeze with liquid nitrogen, problem solved.

OP, I'm not one who usually tells people to move for a job, BUT consider the following:

1. You are single and 27. Your only family is your parents (no wife, kids, etc)
2. Rochester is a small employment market. Pittsburgh is not. If the job doesn't work out for you in Pittsburgh, there are probably many more in that area you can take without moving.

A few years ago, my position was eliminated. I was given an option of remaining in the same job but moving to Tonawanda/Buffalo area or moving into a completely unrelated position and staying in Indy. I took the unrelated position to stay in Indy and then I left the company when I secured another job. Why did I do that? Indy is a far larger employment market (among other reasons).

Not sure what field you're in, but ITT/Goulds (one of my competitors) is located up in Seneca Falls and has been hiring tremendously.

sorry to hear OP, you'll bounce back and figure things out.

You are *extremely* fortunate to not have to pay rent or find a new place to live while you search for a job, very few people are that lucky...

I'd gtfo and find a new gig in another city if I were you... 27 with 0 strings attached? Easy choice in my eyes.

Being in moms basement does tend to muddle the brain however :awe:

NYC isn't too far away. Don't be stuck up there with your family for life. If it were a wife/kids, I'd understand... but parents...

Living at home isn't shameful in this day and age (I think statistics say 1 in 5 adult children do it), I'm just stuck on the staying in the area because of parents thing.

Let's be clear, he wasn't really laid off, he chose not to keep his job when it moved to a 4 hour drive away from his parents.

Sucks...personally, I'd have taken the job in P-Burgh...but that's me.

Anyway...in case you don't know about it, Indeed.com is indeed your friend...

http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=mechanical+engineer&l=Rochester,+NY

No its not. Never apply through Indeed! Find the job posting then find it through the employers website manually. Don't have the indeed cookies referencing you as an indeed applicant. You'll never get the job if you apply through indeed. I would know :awe:.

Yeah, i'm leaning toward the "move to Pittsburg" move too. It would be a great way to try something new, get new aquaintances, try living by yourself and enjoy life a new way.

You have absolutely nothing to lose and you could come visit family whenever you feel like, and them too.

I say, pack your things and move to Pittsburg!

P.S.: Plus the Penguins got one of the best young Quebec hockey player in David Perron to line up with Crosby! You'll have quite a team to watch!

I think some of you are taking what I said way too far. I don't have a job offer in Pittsburgh, and they didn't want me to transfer to Pittsburgh. Right now, all I have is interest from the guys I worked with there, and one of the guy's personal e-mail addresses. Of course I am going to look into it further.

I don't see what the benefit of moving would be. I don't need a "fresh start" in life, I have plently of friends and family in town and am content with the way life is here (besides the high taxes). I definitely wouldn't move to NYC, I like my space and the cost of living is pretty low here. If I can't find a job in the area, of course I'll consider moving. But I am confident in my ability to market myself out.

My old roommate said he could probably get me a contract job working for him that would pay more than what I was making, but no benefits. I'm going to see what is out there before committing to anything.

Sorry to hear, but be glad you are not established in your own house yet, at least you're not having to worry about being foreclosed or something. Still sucks nonetheless though, I'm sure you were saving up and this will be a huge set back.

I'm 28 and live in my own house, and my company got bought fully by the company that partially owned us, so now we're all scared for our jobs. Sucks being in that situation. Just tell us what happens and get it over with! Companies are always secretive about this stuff then tell you the very last minute what's going on. There's like no tech jobs here either, which makes it even more alarming. I'd have to change careers. There's lot of tech jobs down south but screw the hustle and bustle of living down south.

Only good thing is we got past Christmas, typically they lay people off right before Christmas when they do. But I still can't count myself in the clear. Any job sitting in front of a computer can be relocated/outsourced anywhere.

Watch out for those ACA health plans!

Totally kidding. Hopefully made someone chuckle :).

27 living at home and just laid off? I'd be planning a trip to Vegas right about now.
When I was 24 living at home I was laid off. Had no bills and debt so I took a couple vacations and took my time finding the right job. I ended up moving to Miami the next year and never moved back in to my parents house.
If you haven't had any play time since leaving school now would be a good time to do it. Shit goes down hill once you're 30 :whiste:
