Did you see that End Zone catch in the Jets games? That is the type of player Favre needs. Any other player would simply let it fly over. Brady even admitted that you do not need to be accurate with Moss.

Assuming Moss decides he feels like playing in a particular game, that is. Against the Jets, Moss clearly wasn't even trying except on that particular catch and I'm sure he wanted to burn Revis on national TV.

I know that's my point.

Was already excited for that game, now I am insanely excited, even though the Jets look dominant right now.

If revis is indeed 100% healthy, I'm not that worried about this move. Revise has experience against him and short of playing on a sore hammy has kept moss at very modest numbers. And if this is how it proceeds particularly with shanc less than 100% coming back, it will allow a steady run blitz the entire game.

On the good side, this move definitely makes the pats more vulnerable when ganggreen goes up to play the pats and could be the first season sweep of them by nyj, or any team in the east, for quite some time.

It does, but it forces Brady to spread the ball out, which is what his strength is and what he has not been doing.

There better be another name at the end of this story. They could have even benched Randy the full season, let him become a free agent at the end, and still gotten a third round pick in compensation. There has to be another bit to this story. Opening up cap room for Vincent Jackson or a defensive lineman? I just don't get it.

The trade is final, the patriots have once again sucedeed at ripping off desperate teams.

Would he have been a restricted free agent? If not, he was gone and the Pats would get nothing in return.

There is no cap this year and there may not even be a season next year.

I would not call it ripping off. If anything, the Vikings got a better part of the deal for this season. Next season, Pats have 2 picks in the first, second and third round. That said, the pats have not been that great with draft picks. Just look at Maroney.....

Just from the loss of value, the pats would have likely gotten a 3rd rounder in 2012:

The Patriots will receive a 2011 third-round draft pick in exchange for the seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, who started his NFL career with the Vikings in 1998. Had New England allowed Moss to leave in free agency next offseason, it would have received a third-round selection in the 2012 draft as compensation.

As for the cap, you're totally right. I just don't get this.

Exactly. This is what the Patriots want to go back to doing - short/mid passing game supported by the run. Chew up the clock and put points on the board, something you don't do when you're throwing 60-yard bombs and scoring in 3 minutes. In 03-04, they won Superbowls with receivers named Branch, Brown, and Givens. None of those were deep threats. All were short-to-mid range options who then used their quickness to get some extra yards.

edit: I still think though that giving him up for a 3rd round pick is very cheap.

LOL.....so the pats got nothing in exchange....

Based on the facts present we can conclude two things:

A) The Patriots are stupid

B) The Patriots saw Randy Moss as such a distraction, that they would rather get rid of him now, even if there was no increased value.

C) The Vikings are stupid because Moss is washed up.

Even though the Pats have fucked things up in the past few years, I don't know many people that would call the organization stupid. Other adjectives come to mind, but not stupid.

As for B, we know Randy wanted an extension. We know the Pats weren't going to give it to him. Maybe he really started to be a locker room problem. When Moss first came to the team, there were strong personalities to keep him in check. Now he's supposedly one of the leaders.

As for C, the Vikings aren't stupid either. Moss still clearly has value (one-handed TD against Revis is one of the best recent examples), but it is also obvious that he is slowing down, isn't a great blocker, and sometimes takes plays off. The Vikes are desperate for an offensive weapon, so they can probably tolerate any Randy-Antics... the Pats have an explosive offense with or without Moss, so they don't have to put up with his crap.
As much as Bill's shiny reputation has been tarnished lately, he isn't stupid. I think it's likely that some sort of locker rift opened up that was irreparable, similar to the Nomar situation with the Red Sox in '04.

Same sources that said Favre was going to retire 3 times...then Favre's practicing a couple days later.

So I'll believe this when I see Moss back in a Vikings uniform. NE can't be that stupid. Though NE does like to get rid of their best players, mostly defensive players though. NE should just pay him asap. Straight cash homey.

Heard on the radio that there was a confrontation yesterday with MOss. Take it with a grain of salt, however, because the guy did not reveal his source. It would explain alot, however.

I guess having Moss on the team would still represent a deep threat and he'd probably draw some of the secondary away from the others, but he's such a lazy ass. So that leaves Berrian (lazy), Camarillo (rookie), Lewis (average at best), Baskett (mediocre), Harvin (prone to migraines), and Shiancoe (a tight end).

I understand the complaints from Vikings fans being that Moss had attitude issues in the past. However, he was dealt not because of that but because of Red McCombs lightening payroll to make the team a more attractive purchase, which he succeeded in doing.

That said, unless the Vikings give up an unreasonable amount in return, this seems like a reasonable move right now. How many more losses before it's desperate? There's too much talent in place now to let the situation languish simply because of the lack of a deep threat who can click with Favre and take pressure off other receivers. Don't kid yourselves, the team could take a big hit in the next year to two, with retirements and free agent movement. Strike while the iron's hot, yes?

The list of receivers above is identical to last year, minus Rice and plus Baskett and Camarillo. They made the NFC championship with that mix. Adding Moss to the mix could fill the hole that Rice left until he returns late this season.

Ok, so he had to have been a RFA at the end of the season. Interesting, to say the least. The Pats could've held on to him, not signed him at the end of the season, and still gotten a third rounder for him (though I think they would've had to make an offer and have it matched or exceeded for this to happen). And quite possibly, a better third rounder depending on where the Vikings finish.
