Wait, what?

Oh, did you think you were posting positive or negative looking screens? Because from what it looks like those textures are terrible. Skyboxes are nice, and the textures look fine at a distance... unfortunately there's not much distance in a cave so the low res texturing is very apparent.

Yeah, everything up close looks like garbage. I'm kind of in disbelief.

I'm not much of a graphics whore (at all), but even I couldn't help but notice how muddy some of those textures are...
This in particular caught my eye...

Been watching a couple Playthroughs of it and don't think I'll bother getting it. Besides the technical issues with the game, it just is too On Rails.

I don't know about anyone else but the new Patch from Steam released on 10/08/11 which provides some new graphic options also appears to have fixed any and all performance issues (texture popping) on my dual core 512MB VRAM 9800 GT.

It is disappointing to me that I don't get the highest resolution textures even though I have much more VRAM than a console and only play at 1600x1200, as I didn't think I would need to upgrade for this game.

I had planned to wait another month before purchasing a new card for BF3, obviously.

Did you adjust the settings to run the textures on your gpu? Your cpu is weak, but a Cuda graphics card can take the pressure off.

I initially had the option to enable GPU Transcoding, which I did, but it has apparently been removed with this latest patch for my 2 X 9800 GT's in SLI.

I'm guessing you need a Geforce 400 or 500 series card to enable this now.

The release notes for this patch also describe better handling of multi GPU setups but the default rendering profile for Rage has SLI turned off.

I think it's the SLI that disables transcoding. It's still available on my 8800GTS system in any case.

The biggest limiter regarding textures is video memory. I've seen usage go up to ~900mb on my HD6850 system and it could potentially go higher on systems with more vRAM.

This thread is shamefully lacking in screenshots so here are a few that I shamelessly nicked off another forum:

And, yes, it really looks like that on my own system.

These textures are disappointing to say the least when viewed at full size. Even the distant buildings look bland. They would probably look good @720p (consoles).

Are you running this at the highest settings? What's your video card?

Not my shots but presumably at the highest settings.

I'm honestly surprised at the response. I think these shots look absolutely phenomenal.

I think the textures need lots of system and video card memory. The details, not textures, are the hallmark of the game design--more scene details-nobs, physical items, walls, everything, than other games.

But who cares ? Game play matters way more.

There are boring side trips, especially vehicle chases, and there could be more intense killing.

The game was developed to expand the fan base to meet all gamers preferences and thus diluted the pure violence that we core Doom fans want in order to appeal to rpg players, or those who like car chases.Boring game types, for sure.

But it certainly has better shoot outs than anything else in the past year.

hahaha It looks better in motion. The graphics are much better than at launch, and since my expectations were lowered so much I think they look good enough.

If I didn't know better I'd say id bought some little kid's console racing game, added everything they could think of, and tweaked it all until it was a decent shooter. That said, its really gives me high hopes for the up coming Doom 4 and Quake. Doom 3 was OK, but with Rage they've got he AI, level design, and animations down to a real art. Since they intend for them to only run a 30fps instead of Rage's 60 I'm sure the graphics will be considerably better too.

I'm hoping nVidia or AMD figure out a multi-GPU solution for Rage. Not being able to fully use SLI is a bit frustrating. I'm able to create my own SLI settings for the game. Alternate frame rendering performance is horrid. Split frame rendering actually plays the game much better.

Crossfire/sli is always the last thing they figure out and Rage just doesn't require it for most purposes being only dx 9 equivalent. Still, its a AAA title and if its possible to make it look good in s3d I'm sure they'll get it sorted out.

Unlike the most of you gfx whores, I actually played and beat it, despite these "technical issues". I was looking for a good story and something innovative to the fps genre. Unfortunately, this game has failed to provide what I was seeking.

Either way, I hated the ending. Or what I should say is, that I hate the way it ended..

I think the game looks pretty damn good. Installed the ATI patch and used this tweak, 5850 maxxed out (from what I can see), (+vt_cudaBudget 17, +cvaradd g+fov 15) properties set, getting no less than 45, generally 55-58 FPS...before I added the settings properties, 60 flat. Playing 1920x1200, screenshots are showing lower for some reason.

Compressed textures tend to look worse then the originals, but the original uncompressed program is 150gb and requires something more like a commercial computer then a desktop to run.

The complete uncompressed assets for Rage are 1-2 Terabytes, not 150GB. Look up the E3 interview with Carmack I believe.

My mistake. You're correct, the master program including unfinished levels is something like 10Tb and Rage was made from about 1Tb of that. However, you need an industrial computer to run that. The 150gb is, I believe, the least compressed version that will run on a desktop and Carmack hinted they might be releasing a 75gb texture pack.

The real mystery is how much vram you need to run that and how much of an improvement it provides. The Megatextures are huge and have to reside somewhere, but most graphics cards only have enough vram for Dx style games that use smaller textures. The thought of how much memory will be required to add ray traced geometry to the engine in the future is mind boggling. Still, its pretty obvious if people really want to move beyond Crysis style graphics and take it to the next level something like this required where sheer bandwidth and putting all those thousands of processors on a computer to work is the only way to go.

I'm LOVING the game so far!

Sure there are some graphics glitches here and there but man, it is SO expansive, BIG, I feel like I am in the Grand Canyon or something (of course playing on a 43" monitor helps with that)!

And I haven't even done any side missions or the BOARD in Wellspring...

I've gotten so used to tunnel vision with painted backdrops in games that it took me several hours just to begin to really appreciate the megatextures. Rumor is the next big step is to give the characters ray traced geometry using the same compression scheme. Imagine what real curves will do for the female characters....

Yea, I remember in the story he said his personal computer had like 24gigbytes of memory and I don't remember how many processors, but I think it was at least 4 physical ones. Hopefully most of that texture pack is dead city.

Carmack tweeted just yesterday that:

"We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage."

How much immediate help that might provide is anyone's guess and hopefully we'll get it in the next week.

I have the DVD version, but it does not seem to do an auto update when it connects to steam. Am I doing something wrong?
