Radeon R9 270 2GB vs GTX 1050 4GB (notebook)

About to move and thinking about going all laptop to save space. Is the GTX 1050 4GB as fast or faster than my 270 (270 with OC right below 270x) I'll be pairing this likely with an i5-7300HQ (4c4t 2.5-3.5). On a budget but also want it to last a while, hence not going with MX 150 laptops..

Yeah, a 1050 would be about a lateral side-grade to an Overclocked 270. You'll get the boost in games that want a lot of texture memory, and a boost in games optimized for NVIDIA. That's only if you get a fully capable 1050 part. If you get the Max-Q version then it would be a fairly noticeable downgrade.

I'm thinking of getting the "Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5577" laptop. Am I avoiding the bad variant that you mentioned?

I can't say with 100% Certainty. Aside from asking Dell Support themselves, it's really hard to tell as it's not often declared. I don't see any reviews mentioned it's the MaxQ Variant, they just mention the poor screen and keyboard. But it's a budget gaming Notebook so sacrifices have to be made.

I spent a a bit more money and went with the Inspiron 15 7577, which has the 1060 6GB, 256GB m.2 SSD, 8GB DDR4 and a 15" IPS.

The 6GB GTX 1060 was a much wiser choice in the end. When I went laptop it's what I wound up getting once I started to look at comparison benchmarks of the mobile offerings and keeping within my budget.

This is literally replacing my desktop computer since I want to rid myself of the desk and large monitor. I'm traveling a bit more for work and want to game while I'm in hotels and not bring my Xbox. I figure this gaming laptop will be an upgrade in most ways and my thinkpad can still be my OTG system. I'll be moving my 240GB SSD over and making it all solid state.

Dell's promo code is decent (SAVE17) and I got it for $788.49 from $949.99, and a certain cash back site is giving 10% back on Dell purchases, so I got it for $709.65 in the end.

Agreed, 1060 6GB is substantially faster than 1050. Good pick.

Update: Already ordered and shipped, reading reviews it says this typically comes with the Max-Q variant of the 1060, but at higher (and sustained) boost clocks that almost match the regular 1060.

I was thinking of canceling but I really just care for matching the speed of my R9 270x.

You probably won't even notice the difference with the Max-Q version anyways. Temps dictate the boost anyways so depending on them it might even be a wash. Does the Dell allow one to dictate the fan speeds? My Acer allows full control of fan speeds with a app that does allow for a higher sustained boost speed on the GTX 1060. Stock profile is tuned for noise more than overall performance on mine.

First day impressions is that the CPU is in some ways faster than my old FX-8350 (CPUmark99 shows a 25% speed increase in single thread) but I notice it's not as fast in Chrome as my old desktop was, getting little hiccups in intense places I didn't before. Still very fast though. Gaming so far has been flawless. I'm maxing out the games I play including max AA with ease, so the GPU is keeping up. The NVMe 256GB SSD is snappy and I took the 240GB SSD from my old desktop and put it in the spare slot. Both laptops are now fully SSD.

I have been tempted by the Inspiron 7577 1060 6G, but found this one and the urge to buy is rising.

I highly recommend temporarily disabling Intel Turbo in games to lower temps and fan speed while allowing the GPU significantly more thermal headroom.
