my *problem* is when i speculate that r600 is late because of engineering 'issues', i get read the *official* AMD PR as though it were the 'Bible' and told to StFU because i am a 'traitor' somehow to ATi - who i used to "support" ... but who i now believe is really *gone* ... swallowed whole by AMD.

and then i get a little *testy* and poor dreddfunk got caught by it even though he did the very least to deserve anything ... just mildly provoking as though i was too "stupid" to understand the "decisions of multi million dollar businesses"

I have to agree with this... I was a never a big fan of AMD, but they recently (up until Intel got their act together) were making awesome products... Unfortunately it seems AMD and ATI suffer from the same problem... They make great products, but get the shaft because of their inexistent marketing... I had hopes with the merges maybe they could overcome that, but it seems like instead of joining the BEST about both companies, they joined the WORST lol! Lets see how "good" AMD spreads the word about R600 once its out... I hope they can pull some magical marketing out of somewhere to make people buy it... Or else they might just scrap the whole Ati thing and start making CGPUs (or whatever they are called) already

that depends on the CEO IMHO. nvidia and intel both largely run on the strength of their CEO's also - you can clearly see that when intel had a strong CEO (Andy Grove style) they did well, when they had a weak CEO they faltered. Really most successful companies out there are in that position because they have or had strong leadership at the top (Just look at Henry Ford & his Model T - the car was junk, the CEO was great).

AMD has never really been the same since Jerry Sanders stepped down and was replaced by Hector Ruiz (Why AMD chose Ruiz I'll never know since he was plucked from the smoking ruins of Motorola's CPU division). Unfortunately, few people realised his incompetence early on since he was blessed with the tail-end of Socket-A and K8 (though he did stuff up K8's socketting arrangements pretty badly) as very effective buffers.

The buffers are now ineffective though and we can clearly see the real Hector Ruiz.

Much the same thing for ATi really - Dave Orton may be brilliant at chip design, but he's useless as a CEO. If you go back in time, you can see that their current troubles started almost as soon as Kwok Yuen Ho stepped down and Dave Orton took over the running of ATi.

The merger was nothing more than a meeting of two business incompetents and the marketplace has reacted accordingly, hence AMD's current stock ratings.

It won't happen while-ever Huddy and Baumann occupy PR positions either.
