Well, I was referring to Ubi, since all they did was port Vegas off the 360. But, to answer your comment, all we can do is wait. At least we have the hardware and some form of stable drivers, while Nvidia's competitor hasn't been able to finish either.

Maybe it is just me, but I think that term is getting very old... It is like when that person at your work tells the same joke over and over, every day and it no longer is funny or amusing. Sort of like that Leroy Jenkins thing... It isn't funny anymore, but people still bring it up expecting people to crap their pants off laughing... The sad part is, some people still find that funny. Bleh...

I like news like this because it attracts the fanboys (of either side) like ****** attracts flies. Always fun reading the garbage and illusions their pathetic lives seem to revolve around.

Is crappily a word?

what do you suggest ?

ATi was swallowed whole by AMD ... they are but a "graphics division" presently ... eventually it will be "GFX by AMD" ...

DAAMiT is a fading courtesy to the old ATi ;)

shall we *forget* ATi and just use AMD from now on ?
:Q

Honestly? I would just use AMD/ATI at this point. But I'd have no problem with people using AMD or ATI alone.

An interesting tidbit in light of the rumors that AMD may try launching their new cpu and R600 together.

Hector Ruiz interview
CRN: When will Barcelona ship?

RICHARD: It's slated for introduction at the end of the second quarter and will be in the market in the third quarter.

I really hope that's false. Otherwise we're looking at Nvidia running around uncontested for a total of a good 9 months or so.:Q

AMD PR may get away with telling porky pies to consumers, but I doubt Hector Ruiz will get away with lying to investors...

Absolutely not the case. Barcelona (aka K8L, K10, or whatever) is a server chip and there is no reason for AMD to attempt a dual-launch.

A dual-launch certainly was not AMD's intent. They are obviously late on the chip. ATI has not exactly been "punctual" over the past year, and the "R600" (it used to be R400, then R420, then R520) has been delayed for literally years now, probably a half-dozen times or more. It was initially supposed to be the successor to the R300. I'm not sure what happened at ATI's R&D department, but they have had disappointing launches since R300 IMO. Nothing revolutionary. Even the X1950XTX is an R300 on steroids in its own way.

I'm tired of waiting for this GPU (not that I'm upgrading right now, but still it's frustrating as an enthusiast, and rather disappointing). ATI is just lucky that there are no games on the market that require that amount of GPU power, aside from the elite few with 30" LCDs.

and ZERO about r600 in that interview ... interesting though it it

iit looks like *everything* depends on Barcelona ... not r600

and it looks like we will see AMD supporting Linux even more ... maybe we'll get some good game support eventually

An 580 is an R300 on steroids eh? Is that how you sorted this out, this time? This can probably be said about X800/X850 series, but nothing beyond that.

As far as I can see R580 was the first real detachment from R300. It may even apply to X1800 for it's intro of the ring bus controller.

If I were AMD/ATI (courtesy for ArchAngel) I would definitely release some sort of benchmarks of R600 to try and put a tournaquite on the bleeding. Like Intel did with Conroe.
Since they have not done so, (leak benches) which is what a good marketing department would do, I'm going to have to assume that they "can't" get it working right, or cannot beat Nvidia's flagship.

I mean honestly, if you have a piece of hardware that was touted to embarrass a G80, wouldn't you show it? Even if the product was not ready for retail yet, wouldn't you show what it can do to quell Nvidia sales that could have been yours?

Something BIG is wrong here.

yeah ... that's what *i* said :p

big issues ... Hector Ruiz won't even *talk* about it ... after all HE was the one who said it is definitely coming at CeBit

bummer for AMD

isn't it really *clear* after reading this ... AMD amits they DON'T have a *competitive* product in r600: :p

http://www.techpowerup.com/?25870
I just got off the phone with ATI who informed me that the Editor's Day which was scheduled around March 11 (flights and hotels were already booked) has been postponed to the second quarter of 2007.
The reason is that their R600 Series is not where they want it to be yet, so they decided to move the launch to be able to deliver a competitive product. Also I am hearing that at the Q2 launch we will see more than just GPU related stuff, so I would guess Physics or GPGPU computing.

"To better align our strategy with current market opportunities, we've changed the launch plan for R600. We are going to deliver a competitive configuration to market with an extremely attractive combination of performance, features and pricing, targeting a broader market segment in Q2. With the revised strategy, AMD will be better able to capitalize on the broad appeal of 3D graphics and DirectX 10, being driven in part by the growing popularity of Windows Vista?."

"This was a tough decision to make for us, but a necessary one that will ultimately result in bringing a better product to market."

Looks like CeBIT won't be so interesting at all.

so logically

AMD doesn't have a *competitive configuration* right now in r600

--sure *sounds* like 'engineering' issues

The good part about R600 being delayed, Nvidia's drivers being crap, and there being no good games is that I'm getting quality time with my Xbox360.

AMD should know that their inability to launch a product on time has cost them at least one potential sale.

Well, there are probably only 2 kinds of customers for high end cards. People like us who build our own computers and visit tech sites and people who buy from Dell.

Looking around many of the forums (including Rage3D) you will see a lot of people have given up waiting and picked up a 8800. Even Dell includes them in their high end systems. I would bet that if the R600 had been out in December and it was at least similar in price and performance to the G80 it would have taken a good chunk of those G80 sales.

Also if rumors are true that the R680 could be released this year, there is no way they are going to make up the huge R&D cost of the R600.

Failure to launch has killed many a tech company.

Not Phantom... but maybe they live true to their name :Q.
