Just do a google search for Sony, Anonymous, and Geohot.

Geohot is a famous hacker who loves to work just this side of the law. He created a legal way to hack the playstation. Others took his hack and expanded it into a way to pirate games. Sony took Geohot to court and although he technically didn't do anything illegal he settled out of court with them in an agreement not to mess with their equipment again.

That was all good and well, but then Anonymous hacked Sony's servers with a denial of service attack just to show they didn't appreciate Sony throwing its legal muscle around. Despite Anonymous's success Sony didn't bother to close the security hole before sicking their lawyers after everyone that had pirated one of their games. Next thing you know they've been hacked again, credit card numbers stolen, and billions of dollars in lost business.

Anonymous denies responsibility for the second attack, but none of the credit card numbers have shown up on the market. The obvious conclusion is that if it wasn't Anonymous it was someone else, possibly people they targeted for piracy, that just wanted revenge. Sony not only left themselves wide open, but then proceeded to piss off countless hackers. That's about as stupid as it gets in my book.

How did they not? We learned that the person that said they didn't patch the servers made it up.

I haven't heard that one yet, but it makes sense in the overall context. The credit card numbers still haven't shown up on the market implying the intention was to cost Sony business and spreading rumors about the servers not being patched would be another way to hurt their bottom line.

Check a few posts here, it was anon that did it and they admitted to it.

It was a unsanctioned Anonymous hack. Take that irony however you may....

When will everyone learn that Anonymous isn't a group, but just an idea? There is no formal structure of leadership or membership. Arguing about whether this "Anonymous" was officially responsible or not is the most pointless thing going on in this forum right now.

How? If someone claims they're Anonymous and they did it then that means it was Anonymous. Anyone can be Anonymous. That's how it is with something like that. It's not formal so that's just how it is with those types of things. It's not an official group.

If anyone can legitmately claim to be Anonymous then being Anonymous has no meaning. You can't blame them for anything because you might as well be saying some unknown hacker with no known association did it.

Are people getting their password reset emails? It says it can take up to 24 hours.

I turned on my ps3, downloaded the firmware. I went to log in, it told me i needed to enter a new password.....did so, i was logged into PSN immediately. Been logged in ever since. Took all of 2 minutes. Then I recieved an email saying I changed my password.

Which email are you referring to?

You're right. It doesn't have a meaning. that is the entire point. He is unknown. Thats why he is Anonymous.

When I tried to login, it said that I should receive an email with the 24 hours with instructions on how to change my password. It then took me back to the main screen. I wasn't given an option to change my password at that time.

Well, that's that then. Back online with a new password. I think I'll be using prepaid cards from now on. Tempted to take my credit cards off my iTunes, Steam, and GFWL accounts too.

I'm a lot less worried about the credit cards (potentially) being stolen as I am the other information.

Tried logging in earlier but kept getting an error message when attempting to update my password. No worries though, Netflix is working and I don't have anything I'm trying to play multiplayer right now.

couldn't log in. Says its under maintenance

Yeah, PSN is getting swamped with people trying to login, change their passwords, etc. They've been taking it in and out of maintenance to clear up queues.

Guess it shouldn't be a surprise that everyone is trying to login at the same time.

Tried to change my password last night and it crapped-out. I think I will just wait a week or so and then try again.
