I dunno, the problem is that the games are old enough that many people who want them probably already have them. Not knocking Sony, but the truth is for some of us the list is only a gesture.

Personally, I already have LittleBigPlanet. I played the inFamous demo and it just didn't appeal to me. Similarly, even though many people have suggested Super Stardust and Wipeout, they're not my cup of tea; if they were, I'd have purchased them a long time ago.

That leaves Dead Nations as the only game that I haven't heard of, don't own, and piques my interest. I'm actually tempted to connect to PSN and update (which would take a while, as I haven't logged on in something like 6 months). But the more I think about it, I already have a bunch of games backlogged, and there's no reason to add two more games that I very well may never end up playing.

I'm in exactly the same spot. I already have LBP and inFamous (have had for over a year now), and WipEout/Stardust do not look interesting to me in the slightest. I guess I'll DL Dead Nations, but meh. LBP and InFamous are pretty awesome giveaways .. a shame anyone that has really wanted to play them already bought them (well, I'm sure Sony knows this).

Good play, inFamous devs. Doesn't the sequel come out next month?

Regardless, good selection of games. inFamous and Dead Nation for me, easy decision.

i gotta say none of the games listed sound like fun

LOL.. seriously? They're all great.

Which, for me, is a problem. I already own every one of these games :\ So while it's a great deal for some it seems like their most active customers who may own all these games, and for whom the downtime would be most troublesome, potentially get screwed while their least active (or those that apparently only like bad games.. Waggy!) get the best deal. Oh well...

Wipeout!! Of the other four choices, which one has the best multiplayer?

Co-op? Dead Nation or LBP depending on what you want. Dead Nation is kind of like playing L4D from a top down perspective. LBP is a platformer. The controls/physics are somewhat divisive. Some people love the game others hate it due to the floaty physics.

Well, if you own physical copies I guess you could try selling them and replacing them with the free download versions, though I don't know how much a physical copy is going to be worth now that they're giving the games away for free. I guess you'd have to wait a while before trying to sell them.

I can see where Waggy is coming from though. I don't have a PlayStation 3, but I do have a PSP and none of the game they're giving away for that platform interest me. I suck at platform games and racers, and I'm just not all that interested in shooters, especially on the PSP. I can't criticize the selection of games, aside from "Pursuit Force" which I've never heard of, they all look like quality titles. They're just not the kind of games I'm interested in.

Not that I'm complaining. The PSN outage hasn't affected me at all, and I doubt I'll have to worry about identity theft or anything. So any of the games they're offering is more than adequate. As well, I got a better deal with with SOE, 45 days on my long inactive EverQuest II account. That was a game I was once willing to spend money on at least.

Of course I would own them all except the one that isn't good. (dead nation) still good selection fOr those that don't have them and may bring a lot of players to play wipeout online.

They are offering a really solid collection of games to choose from, no stinkers in that list.

do you have to be a paying member of PSN for this? What's to stop someone from creating 3 accounts and downloading all the games for free?

there is no such thing as a paying member of PSN, it's free

only PlayStation Plus costs you but that is not required to take advantage of this

I'm not complaining. Duder seemed quite excited by the offerings and I was explaining why some people may not share his feelings. It appears that at least one person agrees with my sentiments.

Personally, I feel that Sony doesn't owe users (besides PSN+ subscribers) any free games, though they have chosen to do so in the interest of customer relations. It's a nice gesture, and I'm certainly not complaining, merely stating that for various reasons the offer doesn't interest some of us.

Duder already answered the first part. As for the second question, I don't see anything preventing you from doing so. The easiest way I can think of preventing it is only allowing PSN accounts that already existed prior to this announcement to download the games.

I think the offer is limited to accounts that existed before PSN went down. If you create a new account you won't be offered any free games.

Sweet... I've been considering buying inFamous anyway. Not sure what to get for the second game since I already own Little Big Planet. Super Stardust and Wipeout are both small PSN games, aren't they? I think I have the demo for SSD downloaded. I do remember playing Wipeout on the PSX... that was a lot of fun. :hmm:

Do PSN games take up a lot of space? I have the 40g version, and I think it's close to being full.

Is there an expiration on the free games, or could I play one, then remove it and install another?

I'm glad they offered some free games. There's nothing on the list that I'm really in a hurry to pick up but the gesture is appreciated.

Most of them should be fairly small. LittleBigPlanet and inFamous should be the largest since they were originally retail games. I don't know how large, but probably several GBs each minimum. The others will be more like XBLA downloads and probably a GB or less. You can likely Google around and find out.

There's no expiration on the games themselves, but when they are made available they will only be free for 30 days. So you'll need to download both sometime within that time frame.

i really have my fingers crossed here for them to upgrade the damn browser
I just really want cross chat. I have some friends that play the PS3, and if I am playing a single player game, I would like to chat with them while they are playing theirs.

I doubt they'll be announcing any new features for a while. At least not until they get PSN settled and secured. It's not even up in Japan after all as Sony hasn't put into place all the security measures it said it would so government officials there won't allow it.

Which begs the question...why is it up everywhere else if it isn't secure as promised yet?

I love my UpdateStation 3. I just borrowed Heavy Rain from a friend, after spending 10 minutes doing a system update, it is now downloading a 1115mb patch for the game. Unreal.

I actually dread starting a new game on this thing because I spend more time updating the system than actually playing a game.
