what stops anyone? Censure is rare and politically as strong a statement as can e made short of removal from office. It would have ramifications into the future.

Maybe for any other “normal” politician, I.e. anyone who at least pretends to have a conscience. But it won’t make a difference for Trump.

What stops Trump's behavior is removing him from office. If they censure him do you think Senate Republicans are going to stop approving Trump's judicial nominations? Will they suddenly pickup the mountain of bills the House has sent over to be voted on by the Senate just to show Trump they are still in control? Censure is nothing to Trump, he'll rage in a few tweets about how unfair it is and then continue the exact same behaviors that got him impeached in the first place since there are no practical consequences for his actions.

It’s kind of amazing to watch Republicans, even Republican elected officials, try and convince themselves that censuring or the impeachment and then acquittal would somehow stop Trump from doing this again.

What fantasy world are they living in? The best I can figure is that they know what Trump did is insanely bad but they just can’t countenance letting the Hated Liberals win so they’ve convinced themselves that he’s learned his lesson or some such nonsense. I mean for fuck’s sake he tried to criminally extort Ukraine ONE DAY after the Mueller Report came out.

I bet further information comes out at some point in the future that shows Trump continued to try and leverage US foreign policy for personal favors after the Ukraine thing blew up. Most likely after he was impeached for it.

To date a basic level of decency has stopped every President in history until now.

Even Nixon knew when to get out. Maybe you can answer the question, what's stopping Trump from doing it again the day after censure? And don't try to say we don't know what he is going to do. The call to Zelensky was 1-2 days after the Mueller Report.

This time they really mean it, they will have very concerned discussions in private, off the record if his behavior continues. Susan Collins will spend at least 3 minutes wringing her hands before saying there is nothing to be done.

Oh please. To Trump, censure is akin to a strongly worded letter, which he'll promptly rip up without reading. Don't kid yourself.

This whole shitshow will have ramifications into the future, one more 'official statement' won't make a damned bit of difference any you know it.

If there's any one thing to be taken from Trump's kangaroo court impeachment trial and magic show, it's how it laid bare the Republican's extraordinary willingness to allow Trump's incontrovertibly proven crimes against The People get a free pass from them. No pardon necessary.

If Trump loses his bid for reelection, it will at the least prove that The People know what true justice is and are willing to make things right. If the Repubs lose the Senate it will at the least prove that America can rise above partisan politics and show our politicians, Putin and the world that there is a price to pay for the bare naked collusion they exhibited in their effort to keep a known criminal in office for their own personal benefit.

There is no hiding it any more with flowery rhetoric couched in falsehoods, lame excuses and back walking what was "necessary" then yet blatantly painful in its consequences of what the Repubs in Congress did toward keeping Trump in office.

If the Repubs somehow get away with the crimes against The People they committed, it will show the world that what they previously thought about America as a role model to aspire to is as fake as the president of that nation is and how the most powerful nation in the world can be brought to its knees internally with the expert help of a foreign nation that is supposedly the greatest threat America now faces.

In the end, Putin wins, America loses big time. That the Repubs would allow that to happen is so much more devastating than the crimes Trump committed while in office.

nothing will happen, the rule of law is broken

It would be unconstitutional to prosecute him for anything he says in his official capacity as a senator due to the speech and debate clause.

That being said, he just outed himself as a gigantic piece of shit. The identity of the whistleblower was of no importance to Trump's impeachment as no evidence from his complaint was used. The primary issue in his complaint was also substantiated by overwhelming evidence, some of which Trump supplied himself. So basically the guy stuck his neck out to alert the country of extortion and abuses of power at the highest levels of our government and now Republicans are trying to publicize his name in order to open him up to threats or attacks and to intimidate future whistleblowers into silence.

For real, if you saw high level government misconduct and you were a federal employee would YOU blow the whistle after what we've seen? I wouldn't. That's exactly the point - a mob-like, thuggish attempt by Republicans to silence people trying to stand up for the law and what's right. They're a national disgrace.

He also revealed the alleged whistleblower's name in a press conference OUTSIDE the Senate chamber after Robert's refused to read the question.

and nothing will be done about that either
