E3 2006: PS3 20 Gig Missing Features?
Images of system with smaller hard drive missing HDMI input, other features.
by Jeff Haynes

May 8, 2006 - The announcement earlier tonight that the PS3 would come in two separate configurations easily caught the ear of PS3 fans eager for any news of Sony's system. However, upon closer analysis of the images for the systems itself, a rather curious system feature seemed to be missing from the 20 gig configuration.

Looking at the official press site of SCEA, we noticed that the PS3 with the 20 gigabyte hard drive seemed to lack HDMI support. This seems to be confirmed by an offical press release from SCEA, which indicates via comparison between the two systems. However, it also indicates that the 20 gigabyte system won't have Memory Stick, SD or Compact Flash reading capability or WiFi support. Even worse, it appears that rumble doesn't appear to be included with the new six axis sensing controller.

Could the 20 gig become a gamer shunned system? When Microsoft launched the Xbox 360, consumers hated the Core system that didn't come with a hard drive and other features, quickly dubbing it the "tard pack." Will the 20 gig suffer the same fate? We'll have more details as we get them from the show.

Talk about a Sony tard pack.

You can say that again.

I believe they dropped that idea.

325mm (W) x 98mm (H) x 274mm (D), weighs 5kg

compare this to the xbox 360

309 mm(W) x 83 mm (H) x 258 mm (D), weights 3.5 kg

heck here's the original xbox's dimensions

320 × 100 × 260 milimeters, weights 3.86kgs

I want to hear how fanboys spin the whole xbox was a huge sucker. remember we don't even know what the ps3 power supply looks like. they haven't showed us.

oh believe me, PS fanboi's will find a way to spin it. Now we just need to dig up all the quotes from the idiots who dogged xbox because of it's size.

I remember making fun of the XBOX for being ENORMOUS, I used to ask to borrow it so I had some place to stay for the night. PS3 is going to be the size of a small motel. and weigh a metric ton compared to the 360

At least with the 360 Core, you could purchase the accessories to bring it up to the same standings as a Premium... Doesn't sound like you'll be able to do that with the PS3.

Who cares about how big the damn this is? Seriously you but it under/next/beside/on the TV and never really move it. And you dont really need a memory card when you got a HDD, cept for the occasional venture to a friends house. Im glad that the rumble is gone simply cause it weighed the controller down.

They could have dropped the price down a bit but would be losing something like $200-$300 a pop and would hurt them too much. I do hope they have a shortage cause I plan on buying and selling a few consols for a large profit, hey I gotta pay for next years alcohol... I meen books and toutors

well the point about its sizeis that one of the reasons constantly stated about the original xbox's failure in japan was that it was "too big"😛

The price is just absurdly retardedly high for anyone but the rabid hardcore gamer.

No matter how you cut it... $600 is steep.

Considering Microsoft is probably going to cut the 360 cost by $50 in time for the PS3 launch, and how high this price is, I can't see Microsoft/Nintendo gaining on Sony in the console race. Bill Gate must be jumping up and down right now.

Why would Bill cut the price on the 360? This is a great opportunity for them to maybe turn a profit on the console itself.
