XBox 360 cost the same and it didn't have as much as the PS3 is going to have. Demand will be higher.

I'm going to buy one.

I might buy one to sell on ebay

as some posted the release pdf earlier

here

heres' the difference from the pdf

$599 model will have 60 gig hard drive, built in wifi, and HDMI out.

$499 model, only 20 gig hard drive, no built in wifi or hdmi out

I noticed another difference

$499 model won't include MemoryStick /SD/CompactFlash readers built in either.

Yep. If you want to use the PS3 mainly as a BR movie player it will cost you $100 more.

That kind of sucks.

With 4 Million units shipped worldwide by December 31st, I don't think there will be a shortage. Therefore, you will not be able to sell one that is marked up from retail. Also, demand will be low.

I'm not sure why everyone is so surprised. Sony builds the Blu Ray units and designed them. It honestly probably isn't much more than DVD players to build - the main thing is the laser. Everyone is just dumb enough to buy into it because players are released for $1000+ dollars. That does not mean they cost that much to manufacture. It's all hype.

Price is way too high. $600 is insane. That's with no games!! You're going to end up spending over $700 with tax and a game in most places.

I forgot to mention the pdf also includes the ps3 dimensions.

325mm (W) x 98mm (H) x 274mm (D), weighs 5kg

compare this to the xbox 360

309 mm(W) x 83 mm (H) x 258 mm (D), weights 3.5 kg

heck here's the original xbox's dimensions

320 × 100 × 260 milimeters, weights 3.86kgs

I want to hear how fanboys spin the whole xbox was a huge sucker. to be fair we don't even know what the ps3 power supply looks like. they haven't showed us. If its jsut a cord that's not bad. I'm sure the 360 brick adds 1.5kgs. maybe but I"m nto sure on it I don't pick it up everyday

In a knee jerk reaction not to lose market share, we at Sony decided to steal Nintedo's controller idea, we have one game that will take advantage of this technology, and we had it programmed last night. We have not yet released FULL details on the new controller because we've heard that nintendo has more features that they are adding to theirs tomorrow, so we will be stealing those as well. Thank you.

Proof?

The point is Sony is manufacturing these. They've already eaten the cost to create a BR manufacturing process. Sony is the only company currently producing the film layer for BR. It's not costing them much to ramp up their line to build these units.

DO you seriously believe those numbers? Lets assume the start production July 1st and in 4 months time they get 2 million for launch but in a window of 6-8 weeks they get another 2 million out.

the whole shortage creates hype, free press, etc its pointless, you know it will happen, people will line up anyhow even if you have enough to supply each person in line with one.

Do you think they will actually reach those numbers? Everyone has been saying there is no way they are gonna make a good launch in 2006. Sony lies a lot...I dont see them reaching the numbers they said.

oh believe me, PS fanboi's will find a way to spin it. Now we just need to dig up all the quotes from the idiots who dogged xbox because of it's size.

I would hope that you can buy the $499 model and then get a cable for HDMI later.

The console is also pretty darn expensive so it might not be as popular as the Xbox 360 if you look at the price.
However if you look at the value it might be better than the Xbox 360 as it has Blueray and a Blueray drive will most likely be worth more than $100.
Too bad Microsoft will probably try to hinder PS3 sales by lowering Xbox 360 price and/or releasing bad@ass games around the PS3 debut period.

Sony really is losing BIG on this decesion, no HDMI(HDCP) on the $500 model. Think about this, if you get a $500 model, you probably don't have HDTV, which means that you're buying a console that costs more than your TV does. Does that make any sense? Even after that, if the market really has just 10-15% HDTVs how many people are gonna put down for this machine? I'm glad I have a projector with HDMI(HDCP). I'm also glad I have a roommate dumb enough to put down the $642 for the better system.

EDIT:
They really might as well charge $600 and not have options, instead of having two options where one of them is complete garbage.

IGN is now reporting no rumble as well.

May 8, 2006 - The announcement earlier tonight that the PS3 would come in two separate configurations easily caught the ear of PS3 fans eager for any news of Sony's system. However, upon closer analysis of the images for the systems itself, a rather curious system feature seemed to be missing from the 20 gig configuration.

Looking at the official press site of SCEA, we noticed that the PS3 with the 20 gigabyte hard drive seemed to lack HDMI support. This seems to be confirmed by an offical press release from SCEA, which indicates via comparison between the two systems. However, it also indicates that the 20 gigabyte system won't have Memory Stick, SD or Compact Flash reading capability or WiFi support. Even worse, it appears that rumble doesn't appear to be included with the new six axis sensing controller.

Could the 20 gig become a gamer shunned system? When Microsoft launched the Xbox 360, consumers hated the Core system that didn't come with a hard drive and other features, quickly dubbing it the "tard pack." Will the 20 gig suffer the same fate? We'll have more details as we get them from the show.

It's completely and utterly stupid to have a Blu Ray drive and not be able to freaking use it!!! Current DVD's have enough room to last. This is a last ditch effort by Sony to try and catch up to MS. They've failed bad. It's obvious they are banking way too much on getting Blu Ray in the product and out the door, that it's ruined the console for what it is. Sony screwed the pooch on this one if everything holds true.

E3 2006: PS3 20 Gig Missing Features?
Images of system with smaller hard drive missing HDMI input, other features.

So basically all HDTV users will have to end up buying the $600 version. It sounds like the 500 buck version is more of PR-friendly setup than anything useful
