they seem to think that being a secondary adopter is as hard as being an early adopter...

For now...

This is the last year (e.g. on your 05 tax return) you can deduct $2,000. Next year it will drop to $500 and then disappear entirely for 2007

I suppose if you like luxury. Doesn't mercedes and bmw have lots of problems though? I'd rather get a lexus if you're going for luxury.

For customers who want fuel economy to save money, there are many other cheaper technologies available, such as cylinder deactivation, clean diesel, turbocharging, ethanol and six-speed transmissions, which all give fuel economy benefits at a lower cost by hybrids.

But analyst Noble says Toyota warns against automakers believing internal-combustion advances will be enough to thwart hybrids.

"Any of the internal combustion technologies the others are proposing can be incorporated into hybrids anyway," he says. "While others wait, Toyota's lead will increase with market experience and they will advance their technological edge."

Seeing as hybrid technology is still the most expensive of any of these options for the fuel economy benefit it creates, I'd say they still have a long way to go. Even if gas prices broke $3 a gallon in the U.S., the extra $3500 you paid on the sticker would still have bought more gasoline than most people could have burned in a few years on a compact car getting 30 mpg.

Basically, until they can make a hybrid version of a car for under $1000 extra, I'm not impressed.

I hope GM sees the writing on the wall. Gas prices are increasing and hybrid cars will gain in popularity. GM has to decide now, does it want to compete or continue focusing on gas-hog SUVs and trucks?

American auto companies seem so short-sighted it's not funny.

Edit: Though even the "Green" Germans aren't playing much in hybrid gas/electric. They seem to be content with diesel and hydrogen.

So where is the proof that Toyota is going to take over the world? Do they have patent on the electric motor, regenerative braking, or batteries? :D
Also, I wouldn't pay $3500 for a hybrid option even at these gas prices.

well, diesel is a great alternative. it's got gobs of torque, good fuel economy, minimum matinence and dosent smell or sound nearly as bad a earlier diesel tech.

hydrogen, i dont see it happening anytime soon. maybe in 50 years, maybe in 25 but not soon. too amny changes need to be made to the infastructure. also, when you crash, and blow up, the average american is gonna start suing. hydrogen might be more pratical for europe where these stupid lawsuits arent nearly as common.

for the short run,fo say maybe 20-30years, hybrids are probably gonna be the wave of the future. no infastructure additions needed, minimum additional matinence and ulev, good fuel economy cars.

detroit is gonna be a minor player a few years into the future when oil wells start to dry up like it is in texas. besides, we all know just exactly how much the middle east would love to see america fall.

ok in regads to the topic.

I think its kinda of a risk they are going to just roll out ONLY HYBRIDs. But hey. Someone has to do it. Gas prices are just at ridiculous prices.

Doesn't Honda make Hybrids also?

Toyota - Oooh the feeling!

How do you "compete" by sticking a $4000 hybrid option on a $20000 car?

they make hybrids but they make it in a sense where the electric motor cannot power the car by itself like a toyota motor can. less fuel economy for similar cost.(except for the honda insight which is one of the ugliest, smallest cars in america-that is a full hybrid)

What will you do when our gas prices catch up with Europe?
