Are Toyota fanboys going to die when this happens because they will have nothing to live for?

I sure hope so.

not true. i work on a hybrid project. in our vehicle, if you need to replace a motor, the entire transaxle needs to be swapped. and that's a lot of $$$.

there is toyota's real plan... design a car that will be so prohibitively expensive to repair (when the batteries go) that people will buy new cars rather than repair the old ones. imagine, everyone driving a less than 6 year old toyota! planned obsolesence was child's play compared to this!

Even with gas prices being $2.50/ga how long would it take to make back the $3500 price difference on the Prius?

a normal civic is about 7.1 cents per mile in gas at 2.50.

a hybrid civic is about 5.5 cents per mile in gas at 2.50.

difference is about 1.6 cents per mile.

to make up the difference you'd have to drive 218750 miles

You just compared Toyota to Ford, Chevy, Kia and GM.

That's your problem.

I doubt it. For a long time now, Toyota's plan has been to design long-lasting cars, so that young people (who tend to drive old, cheap cars) grow older, they keep buying Toyotas.

Toyota doesn't fall apart NEARLY as quickly as many other companies.

The only question is, will technology advance fast enough to say... reduce the battery weight and size.. and keep the price low....

Nissan basically thinks of hybrid technology as a gimmick, saying that the value of hybrids is lower than their costs.

I'm betting on a come from behind victory by Hyundai. They may have utterly failed at internal combustion, but they shall rule the world of electric motors!

Hyundais aren't awful these days :), but I haven't heard too many rumblings of them making big moves in the hybrid world.

Take note of Malcolm Bricklin who has stated in interviews that after launching Chery, he wants to have an all-hybrid lineup as soon as possible.

not a matter of difficulty when ur competitors ahve to liscence ur tech

Toyota's 650 hybrid patents cover the "power flow" of the hybrid system, encompassing the system's control logic, as well as primary power source, secondary energy storage system and the motor-generator system.

fords hybrid uses some of toyotas tech:p

ONLY if you have the money to buy them which most Americans don't.
Marketing and perception of quality are wonderful things :)

Anyway, gas prices will need to increase to around the ~3.50mark for a hybrid to really take off, if it does toyota will be like

for(i=0; i<0; i--)
{
money++;
}

toyota is actually a very good company and for them to take this step although could potentially raise their profit margins through the roof, is also capable of saving the consumer $ in the long run along with saving mother earth! LOL. Also a down side is if other companys have to pay toyota royalties to use its patents in their cars (such as Ford for the hybrid escape or whatever) it will drive up the costs of competing brand hybrids

Being a service writer for a Toyota dealership, I can say first hand how reliable the Prius is.
They are NEVER in the shop for major issues, our used car dept. purchased 7 TRAC cars last weekend we are down to 2 as of yesterday, and they were priced around 25K for an 04 prius.
The battery is warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles,no they are not cheap, but we have had plenty of gen1 prius owners replace theirs rather than buy a new car.
Just some fyi.

Why do hybrid cars have to look like ass? Do they just want us to distinguish a hybrid from a normal car by looking at the outside?
