Predictions for Trump's COVID-19 address tonight Wed Mar 11, 2020

Has anybody asked the president if he thinks COVID-19 won't infect Americans who are abroad and that's why they aren't subject to the travel ban? Or UK citizens? Does it ask to see a passport before transmission?

The real answer is obvious. He hates the EU, he wants to punish the EU, and he'll hit them at any opportunity even in the middle of the biggest public health crisis in living memory.

Ironic that he declared the border wall an emergency (so he could loot funds) but not this.

Grading very leniently on the curve, for His Donaldship he did an excellent job in reading this speech.. However, his obsession with keeping the stock market/economy up is paramount when we need the president to focus on the medical aspects. Even the stock people know this-futures are pointing to another bad day on Wall Street again. Not since Hebert Hoover has a President contributed so much to accelerating an economic crash.

As for keeping politics out of the process, I point out two things: (1) The House is taking up the Dem bill today. McConnell has already said he will not allow it to come up in the Senate unless the White House approves and (2) The Donald's no politics policy lasted until early this morning when he launched another blistering twit (SP intentional) attack on Nancy Pelosi.

If the USA avoids a severe crisis it will be despite the President's actions, not because of them.

Thanks Trump.

The fact that he accidentally announced the economic embargo of Europe and then had to take it back is not comforting.

These guys are in way over their heads.
Did you see the heated argument between John Kasich and Don Lemon over that very thing? Trump screws up in a written address to the nation and then has to do backsies. Kasich tried to blow it off and deflect but Don wasn't havin' it

That looks like a normal travel day to me. Bedlam not found.

I suspect that the emptying of wallets isn't normal. The ban, of course, is a sham or else no one from Europe including Americans would be allowed in, or anywhere for that matter. But we may give another gift to people who openly admit to pocketing tax breaks for themselves- how nice.

Not advocating violence but the GOP is much like the French nobility before the Revolution, which didn't end well for them.

That stupid people will panic isn't by any means abnormal.

It looks like Trump was pushed to sort of tell the truth. Something he hates to do. The virus does not have a Twitter account and, unlike so many previous Trump foes, is resistant to political bullying or Republican Party solidarity. It has preyed on his lack of curiosity and fears of germs while exposing divides and inadequacies within senior levels of his administration. It may have taken away Trump’s favorite political tool, his rallies, from which he draws energy and his coveted voter disinformation.

Trump believed that through his brute force of will and ability to dominate a news cycle, he could alleviate the crisis, taking to both when he takes to the podium to dismiss the threat.

It's clear that the most important part of the speech from his point of view was to blame the Europeans for failing to contain The Yellow Peril. If there is a silver lining to this cloud, it's that his utter incompetence, ignorance, pettiness, and lack of empathy were in full display for all to see.

Just to add to the confusion, this tweet from the official White House account is still up:

"We will be suspending all travel from Europe, except the United Kingdom, for the next 30 days. The policy goes into effect Friday at midnight."

Dems are going to block it anyway. Payroll is not important. Maybe they'll compromise and include it with other things like extended unemployment and payment for the sick, etc.

Nancy Pelosi made a statement saying the payroll tax was a great idea and saying "today is a victory for all Americans."

Oh wait, that was when Obama did it. She'll no doubt make a complete 180 in her view now that the opposition party is in the WH and no doubt the GOP will likewise completely change their stance on it. Not to mention probably 99% of the posters here on ATPN as well. Basically every single question in Washington is 100% driven by purely partisan concerns nowadays.

[ If condition [Democrat in WH] then:

“Today is a victory for all Americans – for the security of our middle class, for the health of our seniors, and for economic growth and job creation. The American people spoke out clearly and, thanks to President Obama's leadership, 160 million Americans will continue to receive their payroll tax cut – nearly $40 per paycheck in the pockets of the average family. I salute the work of the unified House Democratic caucus on behalf of the American people.

[ Else:

"In light of reports that the Trump Administration is considering new tax cuts for major corporations impacted by the coronavirus, Leader Schumer and I released a statement calling on the Administration to prioritize the health and safety of American workers and their families over corporate interests,"

End If

Cart before the horse. Nancy wants to get something passed to help with what is currently happening. COVID-19 and people losing pay because they have no sick time is the immediate concern. Markets are reacting BECAUSE OF COVID-19

During 2008 financial the markets were the ACTUAL PROBLEM.

Payroll tax cuts are not off the table for later if necessary.

Please be serious, you know for a fucking fact that the payroll tax cuts in 2011 has zero in common with a proposed payroll tax right now.

New poll regarding the politics of Covfefe-19: https://www.protectourcare.org/wp-co...sults-3-20.pdf (PDF link)

From the summary:

Voters take the virus a lot more seriously than the president does. Only 8% of voters agree with Trump’s claim that the virus is a Democratic hoax, while 82% think the virus is real. Only 16% of Trump’s own voters agree with him that the virus is a hoax.

Trump’s handling of the coronavirus could threaten his reelection. By a 20-point margin, voters say his administration’s handling of the virus makes them less likely to vote for him this fall. Independents say they’re less likely to vote for Trump by 32 points because of how he’s dealt with this issue. Only 37% of voters agree with Trump’s assessment that his administration is doing a “great job” dealing with the coronavirus, while 53% disagree.

Voters are also concerned about the administration’s failure to commit to an affordable coronavirus vaccine – 67% of voters have serious concerns about the administration’s statement that “they can’t control that price.” 61% of voters also have serious concerns with the administration’s advice –“tell people to turn their televisions off for 24 hours” -- in response to the historic decline in the stock market.

We will quickly move past the point at which the disease can be contained; efforts will shift away from trying to control the spread to controlling the political damage. He'll viciously go after anyone who contradicts his public statements.
