I am going to tell you going up against a boat OWNER is going to be interesting for you.

A 30 footer is a bit more than a typical 'pleasure' boat...you paying by the hour is going to set a pretty interesting 'case'.

Like I said though it's not always fair.

What does rental have to do with anything? It is quite obvious that I know more about the rules of boating than he does.

I'm not going up against anyone. I didn't report it, although, I'm thinking now that maybe I should have.

Limited maneuverability...it's in the regulations.

Nowhere in the regulations does it give preference to boat owners over boat renters. I've been sailing since I was 5 years old, never owned a boat of my own.

You're so full of shit. Unless hindered by water depth or channel width, a 60 foot offshore fishing vessel legally will have to heed way to a 10' sunfish sailboat under sail. 9 times out of 10 the sailboat is in deeper water than the powerboat requires because of the keel which is usually lower on a sailboat than it is on a similar sized powerboat.

They mean boats that cannot turn quickly, think oil tanker, cruise ship, container cargo ships, ect. It is completely irrelevant if the power boat is '30,'35,'40, you are required to yield to a vessel under sail. Oh, I forgot, since it involved a rented craft maritime right of way rules are null and void.

Up here in Canada a license is required, though, it is easy to get. It does tend to weed out the lazy fucktards though.
