I hope that this power outage doesn't spread to Belgium
I'm compiling a Gentoo Linux for the last 8 hours and I would hate to recompile everything :D

note: I'm watching CNN and they should stop the babbling about terrorism, it's annoying

This is what I'm hearing too. I'm in Detroit suburbs online with the generator running my computers.

This has happened before. Summertime makes the power grid more susceptible to this. Heavy load from air conditioners.

Dr. Peter Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportion.
Mayor: What do you mean, "biblical?"
Dr. Raymond Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath-of-God type stuff. Fires and brimstone coming down from the sky, rivers and seas boiling--
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes--
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the graves!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

What kind of generator is it?
How much does it cost?
How long can it provide full power to the entire house?

Big ole honker, run by natural gas (*I think*). Don't know the name of the system as I dont live with him, but what it does it provide power (through regular outlets) to all but one or two rooms in the entire house. I believe he told me (at time of closing) that it was around $7K. He hasn't had to use it yet (in dallas) but previously with a similar one in his former chicago house it provided power for 18 hours during a particularly bad snowstorm.

I don't know about the first two, but I'm pretty sure the last one is "as long as there's gas in it".

Yeah, it's a constant feed, you don't have to refill it or anything.

Heh. Maybe if each state had its own power grid, and its own power generators this wouldnt happen. Instead you have the eastern power grid, the western power grid, and the Texas power grid, with a bunch of states in the east and west not providing enough power for their own states.

Anyone else watching MSNBC?

There's a handful of people who hitched a ride on the back of a white demolition truck, LOL.

Thats because ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, as well as Fox and MSNBC are based out of New York. So they are going to cover that more.

This is why I have an A.C. Inverter in my car; that way if the power goes out (living in the boonies it can and does) and I need to get on the internet or something else all I need to do is turn on my car, stretch an extension cord through the car window and inside the house, plug the ol' inverter into the cig. lighter and I'm good to go!

Seriously, it's a poor man's generator. $20 at Wally-mart. If you're afraid your power might go out in winter and you'll freeze to death get a small radiator and one of those, or a large radiator and buy the deluxe $50 version with two outlets. (and a higher mA rating)

EDIT: The deluxe model I have also has an automatic low power warning/shutoff, so you can safely run it off of the car battery when the car isn't on. Since the car battery recharges after the car's been running for a while you could theoretically carry on for quite some time.
