So one plant gets overloaded, dumps its share of work on the rest of an already maxed out grid and plants just start dropping?

Is power back on everywhere now?

I am amazed a single grid can take down this much.

Hehe, Im just 30 minutes east of Ottawa and we have power. Everyone else is out, hehe. I think we're on the same grid as Montreal though.

The Great Blackout of '65 was similar.

Great demand overloaded one circuit breaker, which caused higher demand from other parts of the grid, which caused them all to fall apart in a domino effect.

The power grids are so interconnected that it's hard to know where one stops and the next starts.

Google "great blackout" for more.

They're saying this originated in NYC (not sure which plant) but has had a cascading effect taking down other grids/cities with it.

Wouldn't they have some sort of contingency plans for this?

They were supposed to have fixed it.

thats pretty ridiculus that 1 power plant can cause so many problems

Perhaps they just fixed the dependency of the New York grid on the Niagra plant.

I've seen three plants, 1 you could get close enough to throw rocks at. The other two you were fenced off a good distance, but any type of fired object (Gun, RPG, MOrtar) could easily reach.

Perhaps, but if that is true then they should stop reporting the Niagra(actually it is Niagara, but I refuse to edit it for Pepsi's anal retentive self.) grid was overloaded.
