Test Run #2

Gspot Shot - I almost called it the money shot. 😀

Still no frames dropped, and on the WMV HD Test 2 screenshot you can see what my mem/CPU load were while the video was playing back. My system probably wasn't gonna be any good for anything else while the video was running.

Just so people know - the reason that I initially suggesting using GSpot (2.5 beta), was to obtain the actual DirectShow "render path", the decoder/filter components used to render the video and audio streams. Reason being, sometimes, installing those "codec packs" can often cause the "normal" (default MS install) filters to be replaced/hooked by other 3rd-party ones, which can of course affect performance.

Posting screenshots/descriptions of the actual render-path components used is helpful. Posting a list of all installed codecs on the machine, less so. Just a FYI, to help everyone learn how to use this tool. (It was originally written, to help figure out what codecs various random video files on the internet needed to playback, basically. Possibly the choice of subject test material affected the name of the application, I don't know. 🙂 )

I'd love to see the PVP fully functional and prove it can reduce the CPU load while providing flawless playback, but that's just pie-in-the-sky right now :frown:

Oh yeah, I just thought that I would mention this other tidbit I ran across recently - I was reading about another set of hacked/modded ATI drivers, called "DNA drivers". Saw a blurb about the newest ones (based on ATI Cat 4.6 release), having added an additional "WMV acceleration" on/off button. Haven't downloaded or tried them myself, but thought that was interesting as well. If there are any intrepid ATI users here who aren't afraid to install modded drivers, and would like to test if that feature might do something, then feel free.

I know that it's been said before in here and elsewhere that ATI has some sort of video-acceleration features in their drivers, just waiting for some MS fix or something, perhaps this tweak option in the "DNA drivers" enables it? I dunno.

ATI always did use to be very big on video-playback features. Even back in the days of the ATI RagePro, they had a lot of extensive DVD/video-playback features implemented in hardware on those things, way more than NV did in those days. (Unfortunately, the RagePro was pretty crap for 3D, so NV cards did have a purpose.) It would be somewhat of a shame for ATI to fall back into 2nd place for video-playback, on their more modern cards.

Its been in the Cat drivers perhaps since the first Cat's....it doesn't work, its just a registry key. (Believe me, I check it every release)

I'd like to let you know that the 1080p clips that I downloaded just b!tch slapped my machine around! :|

System
Mobile 2600+ Athlon XP @ 2.2GHz
1GB of PC3200 Crucial memory
ATi 8500 <= 🙁

Anyway, this sucks ass! :|

Thats funny cuz my 512mb 3.2ghz p4 with same videocard played it smoothly..... after checking in FRAPS, it said my average framerate is 23.673frames

?

Statistics said 0 frames lost as well......this clip is not very videocard dependent. In fact my stats are IDENTICAL with Megatomic's and he has a 9800Pro.
I even have a screenshot to prove it....i'll send it to someone so they can post it for me....

Thanks a lot for the tip. I'll post it as soon as I can get it to work.

A reviewer actually mentions it!:
On-chip video processor
The NV40 core features an on-die video processor which is basically an entity all of its own - It can even dictate its own clock speeds independently of the core. Unfortunately, at present the functionality of this processor is not yet exposed in any drivers, so for now it will have to take a back seat until it can be tested and its usefulness ascertained.

Elite Bastards PNY GeForce 6800GT review.

Ah so it is a flag problem. The qasf fix corrects the aspect ratio but only when using the "VMR9 windowed" output mode. According to the rating tool, overall system performance exceeds minimum requirements by thirty percent, yet VMR9 still falls short while Overlay does not. What up wid dat?

Damn. I gave this a shot, first try it was running extremely choppy. I'll defrag and update.

System is mobile barton @ 2.6 ghz and 6800 GT.
Hey GG, make sure fastwrites is on after defragging. Other than that your system should be beefy enough for this test to run flawlessly. You don't run asynch with that mobile do you? I can't think of anything else that should hold you back. @2.3ghz my t-brd B was almost there on flawless playback, and aperture, 8x AGP, and various other settings made no difference for me. It was strictly fastwrites on and clockspeed that effected results.

Hmm. I thought fastwrites was a bad thing for gaming. So you have to turn it on for video and off again later? I also can't find fastwrites in the nvidia driver panel.

You control fastwrites in the bios and it is great for nV, it's ATi cards that have issues with fastwrites on sometimes.

I can 99% guarantee that it'll run flawlessly with fastwrites on.

Yeah, I just found that out. Enabled it, 0 dropped frames. 😀
Thanks brudda 🙂 I think we can safely conclude that the PVP isn't doing squat for WMV HD decoding. Fastwrites and CPU speed are the factors effecting playback. At least now I have a sufficent database of results to easily determine if/when the PVP starts handling the decoding.
