From the photo it looks like batch 1237. BTW what cpu cooler are you going to use?

Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

For coolers, my current scope of work is intended to span the stock cooler, NH-D14, H100, and (crossing my fingers it still works) a vaporphase LS.

I intend to test with stock IHS and then lapped IHS.

I am also hoping (again more finger crossing) that the lid on these puppies can be popped off for some bare-die action.

After having seen the improvements achieved in delidding both my GTX460 as well as my 3770k, I can't help but think that the situation with AMD could be improved upon if the lid is removed.

Has anyone removed the IHS? I would like to see what is under the IHS so I reduce my risks of clipping of a capacitor or two, as well as the chip itself, while prying off the lid.

That's what I need to know. I do not want to destroy my 8350, I actually need the CPU to do some work for me once I'm done having my way with it.

If the IHS is soldered then I won't go there. I'll stop at lapping the IHS.

No progress yet, have been cleaning up the study to get ready for the fun. I try to be tidy during my tests but things got a little crazy there towards the end of my 9 TIMs testing with the 3770k.

1237 simply means that it was manufactured in the 37th week of 2012.

The IHS is soldered on, like on every 125W CPU AMD has build in the past 9 years. I wouldn't recommend delidding it, the realizable improvements are rather small (2-3 deg. at best) and not worth the risk.

It takes two months or so to manufacture a die , so when the 1237 batch
got out of the final sub process the 1240 was already at 65% of its factory course....

Even if AMDs ,or rather GFs, APM do quasi real time adjustments it s likely
that the process is already well mastered since it s more than one year old.

first line is..........FD8320FRW8KHK........obviously the 8320 is the processor model
second line is......FA 1237PGN ..............1237 means manufactured year 2012 - week 37
Third line is.........9H71473J20286

I remember reading on AT forums about someone overclocking the NB of Bulldozer and it having minimal effect on performance, would it be possible to test this again on Piledriver or would it still be the same?

I'll try some slight OCs tonight but I'm not sure how much more it will help. In gaming the PileDriver clock for clock is a little better than Buldozer but still trails the Ivy bridge/sandy bridge.

• Modified MSI GTX460 Cyclone (delidded, OC'ed)
• Lapped NH-D14 or H100 (not sure which I'll use permanently)

I have another GTX460 and two other DDR3-1866 memory packs (2x8GB and 4x8GB) to try out, not sure which combos I'll eventually settle on.

I have two very disparate candidate uses for this computer when I'm done playing with it and am ready to put it to work.

If it really turns out to be a good speed-demon when it comes to transcoding with TMPGEnc while at the same time maintains good performance in MetaTrader4 backtesting (a single-threaded app) then I will keep it for my desktop and farm out the 2600k and 3770k for business work.

If it turns out I am better off keeping the 2600k or 3770k for the transcoding + programming work, then I'll farm out the FX8350 as a data harvester computer where 8 cores + 32GB of ram will be very useful.

Is that another suggestion of testing unusual TIMs besides toothpaste? IDC just lock your door, your wife probably wouldn't understand what it takes to be a true computer enthusiast
