Agreed, the actual rankings of 1-50 doesn't mean a whole lot, and too heavily favor private schools.

However, the program ranking, such as the engineering and business stuff do mean a whole lot.

<< most of that is based on graduate level stuff. so guess what >>

How do you figure that?

<< or, you can go out in the real world and be competitive with pretty much anyone else with an undergraduate degree. >>

The job opportunities and starting salary of a Berkeley grad does not compare to someone who went to say..San Jose St.

Its seems to me that US news ranks Stanford and Berkeley the same for engineering

Overall:
1. Massachusetts Inst. of Technology 4.9
2. Stanford University (CA) 4.7
2. University of California?Berkeley 4.7

Once you get into college and deal with it a couple of years, your whole perspective changes. My top 3 schools that I wanted to attend out of high school were MIT, CalTech, and Berkeley. I had no chance of getting into any of them, and if I had, I couldn't have paid for them. Instead I went to Ga Tech. In my opinion I couldn't have chosen a better school. Of course due to my lack of motivation I no longer attend Ga Tech, I am trying hard to get back in. If I knew in high school what I know now, my top choices would have been Ga Tech, Michigan, and Smith (yes I know it's all female, why do you think I wanna go there)

And as far as the early comparison of sports. Stanford has division 1A football and Basketball teams. I'm not sure about basketball for Berkeley, but I know they don't have a division 1A football team, which puts Stanford in a different league altogether.

And as some people have already said. Alot of the time it doesn't matter where you get your undergrad. That usually just determines how good of a grad school you can get into. Where you get your masters is more important.

Also it is not unbelievably easy to get into Berkeley, their acceptance rate is 27%. That's pretty low. Ga Tech's acceptance rate is 69%. But not a whole lot of people make it through. It may not necessarily be hard to get into somewhere, but how hard it is to stay there determines if it's better.

I've argued too much now I've lost my point.

Ooh, I guess you're right.

But Berkeley is higher ranked in:

Biomedical engineering rank: 11 - 16
Chemical engineering rank: 2 - 6
Civil engineering rank: 1 - 8
Electrical engineering rank: 2 - 3
Industrial engineering rank: 4 - 8
Mechanical engineering rank: 2 - 3

While Stanford only outranks them in:

Aerospace engineering rank: 4 - 17
Environmental engineering rank: 2 - 3
Materials engineering rank: 5 - 7

While they're tied in Computer Science.

So you could say Berkeley gets a SLIGHT edge in this department..

simple, the academic ratings are based on other schools' professors' opinions of how good that school is. the most known part to other academics is going to be research and other graduate level academics. other professors don't go to schools and sit in on lectures, in general.

give me an EE who works his ass off at san jose state and an EE who works his ass off at berkeley and i'll show you two guys who are competing for the exact same jobs. the averages may be different, but the cream is always the cream.

Thraashman: uhh...i know this is nitpicking...but Berkeley is called Cal...and is in the Pac-10...in the same division as Stanford for pretty much ALL sports...including football. The S.F. 49ers just drafted Andre Carter from Cal (UC Berkeley) in the 1st round =)

Trust me- co-ed bathrooms are not all they're cracked up to be. It's the most awkward feeling knowing a girl is sitting on the pot making the most explosive noises ever heard

The most popular dorms of Berkeley are all co-ed bathrooms. The Units (Unit 1, 2, 3) all have co-ed. The others, clark kerr, bowles, stern, and foothill- don't have co-ed bathrooms I'm pretty sure.

Yeah all the dorms in Berkeley are co-ed except Stern and Bowles. It was awkward the first few days, I got used to it. I actually really miss it now. I remember some girl commenting on how good my soap smelled. :D

Hmmm..shouldn't I be a senior member?

Cal baby. I didn't get into it because I was misinformed coming out of high school. Had a weighted 4.36 and 1460 SAT and didn't get into the engineering program. Also did tennis, basketball, and all the community service you could ask for. I guess my essay sucked :) I do regret not going there because all my friends went there.

I do know that while I went to UC Davis, I very frequently visited Cal, went to their basketball games, football games.. the BIG game. I even bought some "F*CK STANFURD" shirts :)

The good thing about Cal is that you're in Berkeley, CA, right next to Oakland. Both cities are rough, so it'll weed out the pussies immediately. You'll smell piss, see bums, sh*t,.. People's Park, etc.

I talk about it like I went there, but I didn't and that's my mistake. I went to UC Davis which is the opposite of Cal. It's in a town of 50,000 people, half of which are college students. And it does smell like cows here.
