Discipline is derived from the Latin "to teach". What are you teaching someone by hitting them? I'm not saying you need to have a conversation with a three year old, but tell them why they're in trouble, why it's wrong, and follow through. Unless your children are mentally challenged, it will sink in after a few times. Worked for my almost four year old.

Nobody ever changed their mind from an ATOT thread though, so I guess it doesn't matter.
 
I was spanked as a child, and have this to say about it. I messed up alot as a kid, but I never messed up the same way twice.
 
Responsible, reasonable parents should be able to responsibly and reasonably spank their children.

Unfortunately, the rate of irresponsible parents is still on the rise.

Yes, but I always get in trouble with their parents and the police.

Seriously though, kids don't have the mental capacity to reason and do need a more basic form of education: "Do bad stuff, you get slap, do good stuff you get smiles/cuddles/whatever". Just like a dog.

It p!sses me off when all these wusses treat kids as though they're little adults, and mollycoddle them all the time. Some schools don't use red ink as it makes kids feel bad, and if the kid has done badly, instead of saying "You little fvcker, you did a sh!t-poor job, go do it again before I throw you out a window" they;'re supposed to say, "well question 18 was nearly right, well done! Shall I run you bath and wipe your arse for you?". Plain stupid.

Kids need to be told they've done bad, they need a slap to straighten them out. It's always worked in the past, and you can't argue with results.

Wrong, lugnut. You can have spanking and STILL not have discipline. You can have discipline with no spanking or punishment at all. I know, I've raised two boys well into their teens. You?

If you boneheads would spend as much time learning, as you spend posting here, your kids might have a halfway decent, peaceful, upbringing!
 
I'd be interested in seeing this poll with 4 options; "Yes, and I have kids" "No, and I don't have kids" etc etc

Man, you certainly live up to your username, don't you? I guess they wouldn't let you add the "Sh1thead" surname though, huh? :laugh:

If we're going to stick to using meaningless, anecdotal examples, let me go ahead and use 2 of my own. Both my kids were spanked as appropriate when they were young, and they both have above-average intellegence, superior school performance, accepted social abilities, and are often praised for being such "curteous, well behaved young adults."

What does that mean? Exactly jack-sh1t - same as your examples. :roll:
 
I have been spanked couples of times with hands and belt and they were all for the purpose of teaching me a lesson of what to not do after not listening. It works very well in getting them straighten up. It should be used when necessary and that is all.
 
Hell yes. I've been disciplined as a child and I believe I turned out perfectly well. I'm going to discipline my kid the same way I was.
