If your kids are not listening, talking back, or arguing with you, you've already blown it. Discipline/learning starts as an infant. A child reared in the Montessori method will already have developed good, lifelong habits by the time they're kindergarten age.
Can you imagine a 3 or 4 year old putting toys away on their own? Can you imagine them going to bed without having to tell them twice? That's EXACTLY the way our boys were raised. No shouting, arguing or physical violence of any kind, and no need for it. Imagine your child doing what they're told the first time and every time. Too hard to believe? Suit yourself. It's easily achievable with a little education on the parent's part.
What do you do when your 2 or 3 year old wants to play with the VCR or TV? After you've told them NO for the tenth time, you end up spanking or punishing them in some way, right? When my boys wanted to mess with that equipment, I showed them exactly how to use it. No yelling, hitting or crying involved. Kids have an amazing aptitude if you'll only give them a chance. They WANT to learn! My sons learned to turn on the TV, select the input, turn on the VCR, select a tape, insert it, watch it, rewind it, and put it away when they were done... every time! And, that's just one small example of their everyday routines.
Again, if you want to go through the hassle of arguing, yelling and hitting, day after day for your kid's entire childhood, suit yourself, but there are viable alternatives THAT WORK!
