I'm sure I missed plenty:

--Beaches
--Snow covered Mountains
--Wine Vineyards
--Dairy Industry
--Tech Industry
--Film Industry
--Desserts
--Lots of Amusement parks
--Forrests
--Large Metropolitan Areas
--Cozy Suburbs
--Beautiful Weather throughout Most of the year
--Surfing & skiing

BTW, I'm not some huge California nut hugger but find me another state that has everything I just mentioned.

You can get more than half that stuff in New England.
Not to mention hot humid summers, frigid winters and it being to close in proximity to Pennsylvania.

Did I say anywhere I thought PA was the greatest state in the union? If I had to pick I would pick somewhere like Washington.

And I'm pretty sure you can get Desserts anywhere...

LOL, nice catch, I was having a Gansito while I was typing that list. Besides for those saying: "You can get half of that" or "You can get this and that over here", I didn't ask for part of I asked for ALL.

While I don't think California is great or awesome, It certainly is not the worst state. The worst state is probably Mississippi.

Summers aren't that bad, I don't mind the cold weather, I'll grant you the Pennsylvania point. :p

As I sit here in Boston with sweat dripping down the crack of my butt:laugh:

I really don't mean what I was saying about Pennsylvania but I figured that BigNat shouldn't be the only person posting ignorant crap. What he and others don't seem to realize is that California is very diverse. Yeah they have LA (which sucks)Frisco (which actually is pretty cool) and Bezerkly (which even embarrasses the average Californian) but there is also Northern California which is about the polar opposite of SoCal and Central CA which in certain places is about as Midwest as you can get. Hell it's as big as 3/4 of the Eastern Seaboard so anyone with any common sense would realize how diverse it must be.

This reminds me of the last cruise my family went on (few weeks ago). We were sitting in one of the dining rooms for afternoon tea with 4 other couples and we were introducing ourselves. The first couple said they were from Orange County. Not California, but Orange County.

So of course me and the wife said "Never heard of it, is that in Texas?" lol

uhh... everything you mentioned there can be had in other states except for the vinyards and film industry (and is having hollywood really a plus??)

There are plenty of states with desert, forest, mountains, city/suburb, etc... Arizona is one example.

considering that some 70% of the contiguous US is land-locked, that's a major fail right there on the beaches category.

note: big ass lake is NOT an ocean. no sharks, no beach. Get it?

Oh, i know its diverse. You pretty much hit the nail on what I was trying to say. It so big that you cannot compare it to one state. Instead , I had to compare it to a region.

I agree with you, though...except the sweat dripping my crack part....Instead, I am 20 minutes from Boston in a nice air conditioned office.;)

hence the reason why this is more of an east vs west coast (non rap edition) discussion.

Native Californian here - grew up in Sac.

Parents moved me up to Oregon for 4yrs in the early 90's - I hated it. Californians were so much more progressive and open minded. Oregonians appeared to be slow, lazy, and all weed smokers.

I moved to Missouri for 3yrs and was able to travel throughout the mid-west visiting St. Louis, Birmingham, Dallas, Detroit, Iowa and Ohio. Hands down, California was the best.

I moved back to Oregon for 4yrs to get my BS degree, I was the happies sum'bitch you ever saw when I got to move back to beloved state. Been here the last 8yrs and have no plans to leave.

Cost of living is atrocious - sales tax at 8.25% and state income tax at 9% really blow. However, I think our public school system is tops. Daughter is getting a great education and really enjoy the diversification of students (east indians, asians, pacific islanders, whites, latinos)

When I retire, it will not be here. Its much too expensive but I love the bay area for its highly educated population, abundance of high quality ethnic food, low crime rate, and fantastic year around weather.

I can't imagine ever living anywhere else. Every time I go to another state, there's a million tiny things that remind me of how much better it is in CA.

Yet it never occurs to you that maybe people from other states feel the same way when they leave their state? I was never more miserable than when I was stuck TAD in San Diego for 3 months in the Navy. I had no car, I was not 21 (Florida was 18 for everything then) and could not understand a state where I could walk down the street smoking a joint with relative immunity yet couldn't have a beer off base. Funny thing though, I never let Californians know that I couldn't wait to leave and complimented things I found positive about the state. I have been back a few times since and had much better experiences yet I would not want to live there, it is just not for me. Other than occasionally joking around I don't put down any state (other than the Peoples Republic Of Maryland but that is a proximity thing). One of the nice things about living in the US is the great diversity 50 states offer in the way of people, customs, traditions, and history.

In n out. Can't believe no one said that yet.

I love the weather. I drive 50 miles one way every day on the 405, and I still love it here. It has its negatives, it's a pretty hard-core nanny state, but you can find pretty much any kind of job you want, and in terms of beaches, ca rules. The water isn't as warm as the atlantic in the summer (almost never over 75, even in socal) but it never gets as cold as it does even in north florida.

Go back to Pre 1990 levels. Actually the worse thing to ever happen to the quality of life in California was the Tech Industry.
