The purpose of the thread was to create an unbiased poll.

Currently California being the worst state in the union is beating California being the best state in the union 62 to 32.

This thread wouldn't have been necessary had the OP of the other thread added a "no" option to his poll. :)

The market has already answered your question. Real estate prices are the highest there (excluding Hawaii) because people love it since it is the best state in the union.

Of course, Mississippi is probably your kinda place, so I can see why you'd start this thread.

Seattle here, and I regret my decision to move. I'd make it again of necessity, but not a day goes by where I don't want to move back to NorCal.

Go back to Pre 1990 levels. Actually the worse thing to ever happen to the quality of life in California was the Tech Industry.

I hear it was amazing in the '50s...

I'm sure I missed plenty:

--Beaches
--Snow covered Mountains
--Wine Vineyards
--Dairy Industry
--Tech Industry
--Film Industry
--Desserts
--Lots of Amusement parks
--Forrests
--Large Metropolitan Areas
--Cozy Suburbs
--Beautiful Weather throughout Most of the year
--Surfing & skiing

BTW, I'm not some huge California nut hugger but find me another state that has everything I just mentioned.

You can get more than half that stuff in New England.
Not to mention hot humid summers, frigid winters and it being to close in proximity to Pennsylvania.
There is NJ and then NY to provide a buffer zone for protection

The purpose of the thread was to display my ignorance

I thought that went without saying.

It might not be the best over all but it's far from the worse.

Well, my goal was to display as much ignorance as possible to piss off the californians in the other thread. It looks like we're beating them (like a red headed step child) in votes so far.

Clearly it's not the worst though. That honor would fall to new jersey.

I know two couples personally who moved to other states (Texas and Oregon) and then moved back after a couple years. I grew up on the east coast, still have family there, and there is no way I'd live anywhere other than California.

What can you get? Awesome beaches, perfect weather year round, you can go from the beach to the ski resort in 2 hours, world class wine region, scenic beauty...I could go on and on and on.

In short, no. I'd say California is the best state in the Union.

And freeze your nuts off for half the year. Oh, there is one other thing that New England has that California doesn't, billions of insatiable, blood-sucking mosquitos.

cost of living is horrible in CA. But I don't think our public school system is tops. Too much funds are cut from our education. The state wastes too much money.

Best state, one of the worst administrations running it. But then, all big administrations tend to be horrible.

Worse than the one running the Federal Government? Unpossible...

Damn, I'm noticing lots of FL hate here. Shit, give us In-N-Out and FL > CA. Lower sales tax 6-7%, no income tax, still got great beaches (Siesta Key comes to mind), and In-N-Out. Just throw all the old people out.

Yeah, good luck with that. How about the heat and humidity? Hurricanes? Insects the size of a house cat? How about the fact that the entire state is only 3' above sea level? Or that half the state is officially swamp land? :p

BTW-Property taxes in FL are at least double what they are in CA.

Of all the states I've lived in, Florida is easily the worst. And that includes North Dakota.

As far as California, the whole central valley from Bakersfield up through Sacramento is a craphole. So is LA. Redding is nice though.

If the search function worked properly I would repost the big speech I made a while back.
Actually, I should have kept that speech in a text file when I made it.
It was at the end of my 3 year assignment in CA.

Dont worry about it.
Instead, I recommend everyone read "Whats the Matter with California?" by Jack Cashill. You dont have to agree with every word he says, just read it and think while you're reading.

Once everyone reads that book we will never need to waste time with this subject on Anandtech again and we can all move forward with our lives.

I think it's the smug posters like you which give Californians a horrible reputation. Of all the great things California has to offer, smug people didn't contribute anything positive.

What he and others don't seem to realize is that California is very diverse. Yeah they have LA (which sucks)Frisco (which actually is pretty cool) and Bezerkly (which even embarrasses the average Californian) but there is also Northern California which is about the polar opposite of SoCal and Central CA which in certain places is about as Midwest as you can get. Hell it's as big as 3/4 of the Eastern Seaboard so anyone with any common sense would realize how diverse it must be.

What's wrong with Berkeley?
