I'd rather live somewhere cheaper, less crowded, and a little slower.

Texas FTMFW.

Depends on where you live in Texas of course. In rural Texas, you go from the rush of the city to comatose. Cities like Austin have a nice balance, but Dallas is just as bad as anywhere else.

I agree that Dallas traffic is bad; however, you can still get away from the hustle and bustle of the city about 30 to 35 miles away. I live by Lake Lavon and its pretty nice.

We laugh at your sad, sad states.

"Hey maw, where do you want to go Applebees, Bennigans or Applebees?"

And really, do you IT managers, HTML designers, programmers and help desk technicians really have issues with illegal immigrants taking away your jobs? If so, I'd love to meet said immigrants. Just say that you don't like Mexicans and come right out with it.

OR > TX > CA, Those are the only three I have lived in.
All have their good and bad points, but OR wins out amongst the three.

lower taxes, less pollution, less illegals, less murder, less crime in general.

I'd have to say: close to it. Maybe not the best (high cost of living), but every other factor beats out any other state I can think of.

love the poll, btw ;)

northern CA is ok. i would not live anywhere south of about sanfran, but would much rather live in Washington or Oregon.

amazingly enough, any state thinks that they are better than any other.

Having ridden my bike from San Diego to San Francisco on my way around the country, I would say it is an interesting state but hardly the greatest in any scale I would consider useful.

- greatest number of hippies
- greatest number of bums
+ greatest weather
- greatest amount of traffic
- greatest amount of taxes
- greatest water use deficit
- greatest housing inflation
- greatest population density (excluding the deserted deserts)
- greatest number of forest fires

And so on, so forth.... it would seem to me the negatives outweigh the positives. I could see switching some of these over to positives, though; forest fires ARE exciting; if you like lots of neighbors, then high pop density would be good, if you're a liberal you like being taxed a ton :p, if you like spending lots of time in your car then traffic is good (plus the extra taxes on gas are an added bonus).

Final answer: yes and no. I'll stay here in my $375/month apartment and continue to walk to work and ride my bike to the grocery store, thank you, AND enjoy scenic Lake Michigan as well. :)

Yep, that about sums it up for me as well.

If by "greatest state" you mean a wonderful state getting more messed up by the day with overcrowding, illegal immigrants, socialism, smog, wildfires, polution, then yes, it's the greatest state.

Give me an example of this so-called socialism

Provincial status will be granted once proper division of the former State has been determined. Please provide a Valid DL and BC at the border if you want to visit. "Beverly Hills! Thats where I want to be!
Livin in Beverly Hills.
Beverly Hills, rolling like a celebrity! " *humms along*

That said, Cali is expensive. A larger percent of SoCal folks are egotistical, shallow, and ignorant than what would be in other areas of the world. I'm very happy here in the Bay Area though. And the biggest irritation of all is that people in California have no idea how to dance at a concert.

San Jose sucks, only good thing is that its close to SF and Santa Cruz all at once. If it were gone and SF/Santa Cruz were just pushed a little closer the world would be a better place.

uncongested highways - price of a civilization, where do you live?

realistic property values - refer to above

a governor whose life hasn't been dedicated to make-believe - I could care less

actual trees and vegitation - we have Napa Valley, you?

breathing room (ie not overcrowded) - again, refer to 1), you want all the land and air you want go to North Dakota.

a population that speaks mostly english - why? is diversity such a bad thing, Mr. Adolf

weather that isn't mostly reminiscent of a desert - um, we have ski resorts last time I check, does Mammoth and Lake Tahoe ring a bell?

In a town of 30k, which is WAY too big for me really. 5-20k is perfect size for a town. Lived in a lot of major cities, and wouldn't do it again if it meant my life.

Bullshit. It's worth more to live in underpopulated areas than it is to live in congested areas...at least to me.

That's your choice.

You have A Valley...congratulations...even that valley isn't exactly what I look for. Come to the Northwest or Canada some day...now THAT's vegitation.

Not overcrowded here, and it's not North Dakota. You don't have to live on the moon to have a reasonable population density.

I could list the economic impacts, or the friction it creates in a society, but instead I'll just smile and accept your defeat.

Great...so as long as I live at a resort in one of two very small areas of the state I can survive. Instead, how about I live in one of the 20 or so states with real weather.

you've never lived in northern california have you?

No, but I've been there quite a bit. It's MUCH nicer than southern, but still not for me.

i am not one of those.. i like Michigan, but do not believe it to be in the top 10 of greatest states, and i have visited quite a few and lived in 3 very different states for more than a few months at a time. so far for where i have lived: TN<WI<MI
