whoever said that they're 6' 200lbs and they're not overweight needs to get a second opinion. unless you have 17" pythons and are active, you're fat. can you see your stomach muscles?

I can't believe the ignorance in this thread.

Just for an extreme example, Ed Coan, one of the greatest powerlifters of all time is 5'6" and usually weighs in at about 240 -245 and has a very low body fat percentage.

Bill Kazmaier, winner of the World's Strongest Man 3 times in a row, (1980, 1981, and 1982), is 6' 2" and at one time weighed 330 lbs. with just 7% body fat.

6' and 200 lbs isn't very big or muscular at all, but skinny kids aren't going to understand that I guess. Judging someone by height and weight alone doesn't mean squat.

edit: a few Kaz pics for everyone

no fat here

or here

and he's still in great shape

one more

Like I said, BMI is generally not applicable to athletes and body builders. Do you get my point?
It sure as heck applicable for most AnandTecching nerds though.

Your point doesn't matter. I wasn't talking to you. Did you see that I didn't quote you?

The guy I quoted said he was 6' 170 and "built".
Haha, I'm 5'6" and about 165 or so. I don't even consider myself "built". I don't have enough muscle yet.

Why yes, yes I can. Your point is? (I'm 190, BTW)

Wait until you hit your middle to late twenties. If you're like me, you'll get broader in the chest and shoulders and put on ten to fifteen pounds of muscle and bone.

Trying to compare body size and mass between a teen and an adult is silly as well. At 18 I was 6' 150lbs and skinny as all hell. My shoulders were narrower by two full inches than they are today. Hell, I can't even fit in my army uniform anymore. The arms are too short and the buttons at the chest wont even come close enough to button.

And I don't have any "pythons." (WTF are those?)

He means biceps diameter. But hes stoned like my doctor who said I should weigh 188 instead of 230 now and I'm 6'3" with large frame and less than 15% fat.

His name is "TuffGuy" and he's obviously some sort of musclehead with a little too much testosterone pumping through his veins. The kind of person that thinks unless you live to pump weights you are a worthless scrawny little punk or a fat bastard that should be squashed out of existence.

Maybe if he layed off the weights every now and then he wouldnt be such an asshole. Besides, I'd be irate too if I had to eat tuna all day, every day. :D Can we say pork chops? Steak? Mmmm chocolate? Spare ribs!!! Chicken Wings!!!

(Can you tell I dont like meatheads much?)

In college I was 5' 9" and about 200-205 and I was in the best shape of my life. 17" guns, 46" chest, 33 waist, and yes I could see my stomach muscles. The BMI is garbage for most atheletes like weightlifters and football players. I would be willing to wager that over 80% of the NFL would be overweight or obese by the BMI standards.

That being said, Today I am weigh in at about 245 which puts in the overweight category in my book, down from the 270 I was at the begining of the year.

I've lost weight recently cos I've been clinically depressed. I've also stopped eating meat pretty much all together (had like one chicken sandwich in the past month).

Thought things were going to be ok, but I've just lost my day job (tech support) and the girl who I really thought I might spend the rest of my life with has told me she doesn't love me!! So no doubt I shall continue to plumet to dangerously low levels.

Should probably head down to KFC and get a family size bucket for myself or something ;) Any way, my BMI at the moment is 18.1

Isn't that sort of inaccurate? I mean, what if you weight train? You could be "overweight" then.

EDIT: 5'9", 152lbs and gaining 1.5lbs+/week :)

i'm 5'11" 185 and it comes out to 25.8
but it says i can go down to 133 and still be normal. i'd die at that weight.
i don't like this bmi it doesn't take into account sex, or body type

210 lbs, 6'0", so that's a BMI of 28.5 ;)

I am pretty well-built, since I have very broad shoulders and I'm actually buff (I workout/lift at least 4 times per week). I could definitely lose about 20 lbs. though, but I'm working on that :)

don't think thats right though..theres some guys in the nfl who are like 5'10" 180 or 5'11" 190 and they arent overweight...like someone earlier said it doesn't account for muscle

BMI doesn't work for athletes and bodybuilders.

However, it should be relatively accurate for the typical AnandTech nerds.

Sorry, I still will agree with AmusedOne. It doesnt take into account many variables. Im 6'0 and 225, and it says Im obese. Am I overweight? Yes. Do I have a gut? Yes. Am I obese? No.

I said normal. In actual fact I think I'm about 26 which is technically overweight. I'm 5,11 weigh around 184 pounds which accounts for my score. BMI is ok for a "typical" person but for me I can say with certainty that i'm not overweight. I have probably 15-20 pounds of muscle more than the average person of my height who doesn't do weight training, so subtract that 15-20 and my BMI is suddenly within normal range. My body fat is probably 11% or so which no doctor would say is overweight.

That thing doesn't account for people who do weight lifting. According to the scale I'm 26 bmi, yet I barely have any fat on me (13% fat level)

My girlfriend is 6'0, 190... That's 25.8. Hmm. Bah. I think this thing is too general. :p Gotta take into account body type, too...

After reading through the thread, I think we have come to a conclusion..

This thing is suck.

No, "is suck" sucks. ;)

Now, back on topic, it calculated me to be "normal" but I know that it wouldn't hurt for me to loose a few lbs - thus, I've come to agree with your conclusion.
