The schools closing because of cold weather is weird to me. I grew up in the same area that my kids go to school and I can't ever remember it being closed because of "cold". Hell, even the local University is closing because of it being cold. We've had three "cold" days already this year. Snow & Ice days I understand. But cold days? Eh.
Usually it's because the pipes are frozen and toilets won't flush, lunch can't be made.

We'll be receiving another blast tomorrow. Hopefully that means working from home :)

I'm going to Austin TX this week to do some house hunting.

Going from lows in the teens/low 20's and highs in the upper 30's where I am now to lows in the 50's and highs in the low 70's. :)

As others have said, kids waiting for the bus is not safe. Secondly buses do not start these days with the biodisel blends they are forced to use and in the past when it gets cold some bus companies run the buses all night to ensure they will run. If you try and start them at 5am a good number of them will not start.

My daughters' preschool is not closing this time since they realized we all have garages so no one will freeze on the drive to preschool.

But i would hate to be the construction workers who have to fix burst pipes in this weather. One preschool teacher cannot drive on her street until they get it fixed.

Different countries, different cultures, different legal systems.

When there is freezing rain or low visibility buses get cancelled. Then it's a mad scramble for everyone. I don't see how that is safer

How do you guys live in places where you can't even go outside during winter?

Nearly every place has some kind of tradeoff. It's not like it's 15 below for three months straight. Yesterday it was really pleasant and 45 degrees. In places where it's cold in the winter you typically have some pretty kick ass fall weather that easily some of the most enjoyable weather you could ever ask for and the mid spring to early summer are all great.

Contrast that to a place like Houston or a lot of the south where it's probably not too bad right now, but it's 100+ degrees and oppressively muggy for 3 months straight during the summer and you don't even want to step foot outside. Same problem, different end of the spectrum.

I honestly believe that 4 real seasons add balance and perspective to a person. You just sort of learn how to adapt and manage about anything mother nature throws at you.

Minnesota is the middle of the continent so we will have 90 degree heat in the summer. I will tell you this, when you go through a cold winter you don't waste those precious warm weather days in the summer which is why almost no one watches TV in the summer here.

Please tell me you're not going to be another relocating liberal. Now we have dedicated bus lanes thanks to those types.

If it were up to me Ron Paul would be President right now...

If buses can't go, school gets cancelled. No scramble at all. That's kind of the idea. Limit the traffic.

It's not gonna be as warm this weekend as it was the last.

Expecting sleet and freezing rain here tonight. Still warmer than the majority of the US, but not shorts weather.

-3F when I woke up this morning, it actually didn't feel too bad out until I felt the wind. Supposed to get to -20F tonight with -40F windchill. I think I'll stay inside and watch a movie or something tonight. :)

When I was a wee lad, on the very few occasions school got canceled for cold weather (-25F seemed to do the trick) the kids would all be outside playing anyway.
