2 hour delay for us today - snow blowing so bad a couple of the towns pulled their trucks off the roads for a while until it lightened up. So, I went to the sawmill & got some lumber. Time to build a 12x8 foot wall outside (rough cut lumber - 1x10's), with a sub-zero wind chill.

How long does it take to get frostbite when the wind chill is negatives, e.g. -30?

No idea to be honest, we just dressed up in many layers and lotsa scarves/toques , to be honest i don't think there was ever more than a 10-15 minute wait for the bus to show up, it wasn't gonna kill us and we had no protection from the wind at all.

San Antonio virtually shut down last Friday due o ice rain, expecting another tomorrow morning. 5, 6 and 7 AM have 40% chances of rain and wind chill will be around 26 degrees, lets see what happens...

I don't miss the days of having to wait for the bus in the cold. There was nothing more exciting than seeing the bus pull up, though at the same time, you kinda hopped it did not show up, as it may have meant it was a snow day. Snow days are very unpredictable here. There can be a month of -40's and there will be 2 snow days that month because it's too cold. It's been cold all month!

Around 65F today, high tomorrow supposed to be 32F, and that'll be at midnight tonight. Supposed to be no higher than 28F during the day, 21F tomorrow night.

Snow is supposed to start falling around 8AM tomorrow morning, lasting until maybe same time Wed. morning. Forecast is 2-5 inches, a lot for around here in SC. At least we're supposed to miss getting the ice those south of us are supposed to get. Much rather have snow vs. an ice storm.

All I can say is thank goodness our fireplace is working. I know we're going to lose power for a day or two, at least. Hopefully, with the fireplace, we won't freeze.

No work tomorrow and all the schools were closed today and will be tomorrow. There's been so many snow days at the schools that President's Day is now a school day, and they have to extend the school year.

That sucks. I know we get a bit more lake effect snow down here but this storm wasn't really in that area, so it still hit you bad.

During the first storm we had a shit load of problems at the plant because we shut down, and the bitter cold froze a bunch of lines and we couldn't start up easily. This time we were planning on running through the storm, except with this travel restriction we don't have the personnel to keep running so we'll shut down again. Tonight will get down to -11F (-31 wind chill) so I'm sure we'll be fucked again. Probably rupture another fire line.

Worst of it is that half of the plant was down for a major maintenance outage, so a lot of work that REALLY needed to get done will probably get postponed.

Wow that's crazy, I can't think of any time where they actually shut things down here because of snow. I've had to drive in nearly a foot of snow just to be to work on time, not fun at all when your small car is also the plow. Terrible gas mileage too. Takes several days to plow all the streets usually. They do the busy ones first but side streets can take a while. People complain, but there's only so many plows and so many drivers, and so much time. I'm sure they do their best.

No big snow storms here yet though, most we've had is maybe a bit over a foot. In the past years our storms have been later in the year. March to May was pretty bad last year. By June I was really fed up of shoveling.

That's the one complaint I don't have about this winter so far, shoveling. We usually get that really thick heavy wet snow that's like cement, a couple of inches can break your back. This year it's been so cold the snow it super powdery and light. Even half a foot you can just push it out of the way with the shovel.

How do you guys live in places where you can't even go outside during winter?

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Most of us own clothing. It's not that hard to dress appropriately for the weather. I was outside from 3:30 to 5:30 with a very strong wind blowing across the field at me; single digits, plus a negative wind chill factor. I just got in from finishing building a wall to keep goats contained. Just got back in the house - and I was as comfortable as could be outside.

State exams tomorrow; make-up exams for students who failed math last June or want to improve their grade. At least a 2 hour delay, else a snow day is very likely tomorrow; most of the districts in the area already announced that they're closed. I'm the lucky one - I volunteered to go in regardless so any students wanting to take the state exams could.

they shut us down back in 2010 when we got over a meter of snow. Everything was shut down and the city/police ordered everyone off the roads.

Southern Maine is pretty cold this morning, currently in the single digits. Making things a little worse is the fact that my furnace stopped this morning - trying to get that sorted out now. I do have a mini-split as well, but it's not going to keep the house warm overnight, as it has a tendency to turn itself off around 5F when its efficiency drops off.

Get a snowblower. I took a gamble on the $500 (shipped) Chinese specials that Amazon sells - the brand is PowerSmart. It uses an LCT 208cc engine, same as many lower end name brands are using today and known to be pretty reliable. So far, so good. We've gotten a lot of snow in Maine, and a variety of it too - first storm was about 16", then we got some light stuff, some wet heavy snow, some that got compacted because I was out of town, etc. So far it's handled it all pretty well, including the time I ran over my downed metal mailbox - was wondering where it was, oh there it is.

I have a fairly steep driveway, probably 50-75' long, two cars wide. I'm not sure that I'd last a whole winter shoveling it.
