Out of curiosity, when did they come up with E as a grade? Like JTsyo, I grew up with A,B,C,D, and F. Is this some sort of cheesy new-age "self-esteem" thing where we're afraid to tell our kids that they failed at something?
And yeah, the OP deserves an apology from the instructor. Also, it sounds like the kid was too passive about the whole thing. He should have a better clue as to how his grades are generated and what goes into them.
Imagine the parent's reaction if the kid had noticed the undeserved E on the progress report, then had taken the initiative to go to the instructor and have it fixed prior to coming home for the day. Too much to expect, I guess...
