Compters are not cars...if you wax them and keep them clean it doesn't mean they remain useful forever. My GOD, if your son gave you a P-75 with Windows 95 (upgrade), don't yell at me because I can't get this piece of crap connected over the phone. Let the damn thing die, get out your wallet, spend $300 on an EMachine, and STFU you cheap a$$!!!!!! :|

I feel your pain. Imagine spending 3 hours at someone's house while Anti-Virus and Spyware apps are scanning.

It's even better if the person you are helping is standing right behind you wondering if you know what the F you're doing... ;)

What gets me...is that people would rather pay me $150 to come out for 3 hours and work on a 7 year old machine that well beyond it's useable life and try to revive it, than just spend $300 on a brand new Dell.

I know the feeling.

And I give the OP 8/10, I've ranted this before IRL. :D

The sad thing is that if they *knew* as much about computers as they did about cars, they *could* keep it running forever. Same way you do with a classic car.

Replace everything except the chasis on a regular enough basis! It's called 'upgrading individual components', and it's not that hard to do.

Don't worry. Thats why you have a nifty little laptop with just a gif that has bars moving back and forth like one of those screens in a movie where the government is trying to find some guy that erased all history but they traced him through a woman who remembers his face because she served him coffee three years ago in a coffee house in rome.

There is nothing classic about a dying ancient HDD that sounds like a yeti.
