It's always funny when the truth comes out. I wonder what those who rode JoePa's nuts think of him now or are they still blinded by their JoePaLove.
Should Penn State football be suspended for 2 years by the NCAA? Penn State is gonna have a tight budget for a while considering all the lawsuits from the 50+ raped kids. You think $1B in punitive damages? I imagine Penn State enroll has seen significant drop this year. Gonna be a rough couple years for Penn State Pedobears... I really hope every game against Penn State has one opponents fan wearing a Pedobear costume.
All those students protesting the investigation because it made Saint Joe look bad need to be bitch slapped.
Lubrano, Class of 1982, who’s also running for an alumni seat on the board in the spring election, said he’s distraught that Paterno didn’t receive a formal apology from Erickson and the board before his death.
At the event on Friday, Lubrano said he wanted the board to apologize to Paterno and his family for the timing and way Paterno was removed. Lubrano recognized that Paterno was 85 years old and in poor health and told the audience that there could be “permanent damage” within the Penn State community if Paterno passed away before that apology was issued.
“Now that [Paterno] is gone, their opportunity to provide that to him has passed,” Lubrano said Sunday afternoon. “So what could have been a temporary hurt has a much greater chance to become permanent.”
Friday’s event was held for members of the community to come together and share their comments, emotions and reactions for the board’s decision to remove Paterno as head football coach.
Lubrano said he believes in order for the university to heal after Paterno’s death, the board must come to the realization that the firing of Paterno was wrong.
50+ raped kids? AFAIK its closer to a dozen (that have come forward at least). If they didn't come forward for the criminal trial, I doubt they will have luck getting much money out of the university.
Enrollment has gone up, just like it has every other year: http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/30/penn-state-apps/
Penn State has an annual budget of over 4 billion dollars. That coupled with the fact that theres no way there will be $1B in settlement, they will be just fine.

Who in their right mind would want to carry around a degree from a University that is associated with institutionalized pedophilia? When I see "Penn State" listed on someone's resume or linked in profile this pedophilia scandal is the first thing that comes to mind. The school's alumni are the ones who are really going to be hurting from this scandal for years to come since they already have 10's of thousands of dollars invested in the brand name.
If I'm in the market for a new college degree I, for one, will go well out of my way to avoid this institution.
Not really. I'm 6 years removed from my degree and I get job offers on a regular basis. Anybody with half a brain would realize that this scandal has nothing to do with academics.

And if all of those kids are given 100 million, then it could be easily over 1B. Not to mention new alum donors are down 37% this year.
I agree.
Must find. Quote?
If you read the progression of the events leading up to his retirement, it really feels like the university went out of their way to not 'hurt his feelings' and basically allowed him to get whatever he was asking. And these are people who knew about the incidents in 1998 too! This makes no sense at all.

Keep in mind that a lot of school revenue comes from fundraising dollars, and athletics can be enormous sources of fundraising revenue. Phil Knight gave UO hundreds of millions of dollars earmarked for building a new stadium. Penn State, in the wake of this scandal, has had one of its most successful fundraising years in school history. Athletics is a big draw for many donors, which is problematic when a school is given hundreds of millions earmarked towards the athletics department with nothing to spend it on. So it's not fair to say that athletics is some miniscule part of higher education; it's a source of revenue in a lot more ways than ticket sales or merchandise.

The AD at PSU is a separate entity from the university (this is true of only 3 D1 universities, I think).
Aside from the 'ol rape enabling coach's name on their library, I don't think much of that fundraising goes into the actual school. The stadium--I imagine--is controlled by the AD? I could be wrong about that.
PSU is a very large, very good international research institution. They receive metric shit tons of cash from Federal grants (from their PIs whose labs define the research at the school, and whose grants are used to pay the staff of the University) and from foreign interests that would have no clue what "football" is.

The school controls the Athletic Department, the Athletic director reports to the President of the University, who reports to the University Board. While it is a separate legal entity, the same people are in charge of both.

What about civil lawsuits, should their be a limit on how much Penn State has to pay? The only thing that bothers me is any large payment will likely mean less money for the academic programs, and more tuition increases for the student. But someone needs to compensate the victims.
Apparently you did not read the Grand Jury report from that time period. LOL at "baseless accusations".

again, the latest figures that I read (and linked very early in this thread), show that the AD contributes about $20-30mil, per year, to the University. That is the revenue that the University profits from all of PSU athletics, and yes--Football is the vast majority of that--and this is after football divvies up their profits to keep the rest of the AD afloat.
all this time--I am simply pointing out the fallacy that athletics, despite their legitimate merits, are not the behemoth revenue generators for the Universities, as people like to claim. That is all I'm saying.
Now, if some donor wants to donate a pile of cash to construct a building, b/c he loves PSU football, that is another thing--and is not directly tied to University revenue. Sure, one can argue that this building will house PIs and their research, and their grants that generate the vast majority of university revenue--but crunching the numbers to argue that the existence of this building is attributable only to football, is dubious, at best. It's just as likely at any given university, that such buildings are funded by academic-inclined alumni, and far more important: local industry leaders that recognize the value in establishing a nearby "PhD factory."
It is more likely that alumni and donors that are pumping money into the university explicitly due to football, are doing so to spend that money on football purposes (training facilities, trophy rooms, stadium upgrades, a statue of pederast-enabling old codger, etc).

"My client and his mother were so angry at the revelation that Joe Paterno knew about the initial 1998 investigation into Sandusky that went nowhere," Boni told ESPNNewYork.com in a phone interview Thursday night.
"They see the cover-up and Paterno's knowledge of the allegations back to the late 1990s as the things that caused my client's molestation in 2007 and 2008. But for that cover-up, he would not have been molested by Jerry Sandusky."
Through tears, Victim 1 delivered powerful testimony at Sandusky's trial, telling how Paterno's former defensive coordinator befriended him, assumed the role of a father figure (Victim 1 was raised by his mother) and ultimately assaulted him and forced him to engage in oral sex.
