Parents to teachers: No more red pencils

Parents objected. Red writing, they said, was ?stressful.? The principal said teachers were just giving constructive advice and the color of ink used to convey that message should not matter. But some parents could not let it go.

In many other schools, it?s black and white when it comes to red. The color has become so symbolic of negativity that some principals and teachers will not touch it.

So where did all of these weaklink, fragile kids come from? I don't remember seeing any 50 years ago when I started school.

How do people come up with idiodic crap like this?

It reminds me of BS like not keeping score, so that there are no "losers".

I am even dumbfounded whe I see hordes of "grief counselors" decend on a school when a student dies. I knew several students who died during the time I was in school. All of us found a way to deal with it on our own; and it worked out fine.

Does anybody here think they can justify this sense that kids are such candyasses today?

Heh that's a riot. I remember the year I graduated high-school, and a liberal principal took over and instituted "outcome based education". Flunk the test? Keep taking it till you get a C. What a joke.

Kids aren't candy-asses, parents are just terrible. And we've built a society that supports and rewards bad parenting.

well it was new england one of the blue states so I am not suprised. Another fine example of the stamping out of common sense. I just wish George C Scott was here to slap em🙁

I know that my sister, who teaches what you would call middle school (and she teaches math and french, two unpopular subects) has avoided the red pen since she started her career. She believes that the carrot works much better than the stick, and that the red pen symbolizes that stick.

That being said, I think that educational decisions should be left in the hands of the principles and teachers more than the parents.

amazing isnt it?

Well they should use a hot pink. It screams out error even more and who could object to "pink"?😛 I feel sorry for teachers with all these overprotective "my child can do no wrong" parents out there. It's amazing they can even find people to do the job.

So you're blaming teachers for something the parents are responsible for?

No, I'm thinking that he is blaming the structure of the education system for being too weak-kneed in the face of parental opposition.

Blue is a preferrable choice. Another thing we are taught as educators is to never post work with grades visible to others.

I think they should use purple pens... hell, why not rainbow colors? 😀

Hells bells people - if the answer is WRONG - the kid needs to know it's WRONG. There is no need to nicey-nice it up. Red stands out against the old blue printed "copies" and the black modern copies. Sheesh...this shouldn't even be an issue.

I'm glad I avoided most of this crap. They cancelled our Halloween parties where we got the dress up all gory, I'd say around 3rd grade. Then we got rid of Christmas probably around 4th grade. Tackle football wasn't allowed but this rule was weakly enforced.

All of this stuff doesn't help the kids, it just makes them feel even worse about "the system." Kids aren't too stupid, and when you start doing crap like having no red ink most of them see it as moron parenting/teaching just as much as we do.

It's just part of the sterilization and babyfication of our society. I'm old school though. I post grades, tell kids things straight up, sometimes use embarassment as a tactic, use red pen, and use the carrot AND penty of stick. 8 years now... we'll see how long I last 🙂

Maybe we should stop failing poor performing students and just hand everyone a high school diploma like those participation awards they give out for sports...oh wait, our academic institution are already doing that.

I can't wait to see what happens when the current generation of over sensitized and protected kids become adults and someday run this country...then again, what do you expect when the parents of these kids are giving them names like Tyler, Dakota and Alexis

I feel the same way. One of my best friends is going to become a teacher in a few years, and I fear for her sanity...😛

Principals can't dictate what is taught in schools without first getting the backing and approval from the local and state School Board. I bet that policy was more then likely trusted onto to him to institute or else.
