Here you go, buy an Asus netbook, and install Linux on it. The new netbooks are pretty sexy, and cheap, and you can then do some coding for free software projects. You can have all the free software you want, improve your brain through logical thought, and contribute to society. The cost to play is about $300.

I don't really recommend netbooks really. For all the ones I sold while working at NCIX I just can't stand working on them for anything more than browsing the web and even there they are getting more and more marginalized. The WEB is actually becoming the computing platform of choice for a lot of things and web 2.0+ heavy sites can make a netbook feel slow. I'd put the min TridenT should spend on a school laptop of the type you mention at about 500-$600. You can get a good laptop in this range that will run circles around a netbook.

I've paid for everything but tuition throughout my college career.

You're a whiny bitch. All you need for school is something for word processing, trying to extort any more than that from your parents just shows how useless you are as a person.

Uhh no games are NOT a macbook's strong suit. Even lightroom I'd look for a laptop with more ram than your average macbook. Macbooks are for people who want a really nice looking and feeling general use laptop. Someone who wants no compromises in built quality, no keyboard flex, solid aluminium build, very nice screen, just high quality components all round. However they are willing to sacrifice specs a bit to get this cause most macbooks are middle of the road spec wise. Actually for taking notes, writing up essays and other documents, presentations, etc they are good laptops. Which means they are actually good school laptops if you can afford them. Though like I said you can get quite a lot more spec wise for the same price if you don't mind sacrificing built quality a bit. Or get more than one laptop if you don't mind lower specs AND build quality like others have mentioned. And such a cheaper laptop would suit your needs for school as well. And they aren't really good for the 2 things you mentioned above.

I never said a Mac in regards to games (I said $1500 laptop). Besides that, you CAN put Windows 7 on it, but I don't recall the specifics of the graphics that MBPs come with these days.

Why would I get a shitty netbook? I hate netbooks.

Also.. you are in a public university right?

You should be able to use systems in labs.. and most of them should be open past midnight.

Proof that you didn't read the thread.

I do a lot of computing on my Eee900. 900mhz CeleronM, 1gb ram, and 16gb hd. You aren't going to watch HD video on it, but it'll do everything else that matters. Plug an external keyboard in, and it's as good as any other machine.

Because you don't have any fuckin' money, and instead of being a worthless leech, you can contribute something for a change on a tool that's suitable for someone who doesn't have any money :^S

What in god's name could I possibly get that would be suitable for me besides a laptop or more camera lenses (or good speakers or... whatever, more tech items you all think are satan's work)? I have all the 'necessities' as far as ATOT is concerned.

True. And for something like programming as you mentioned a netbook can get you buy fairly late into a programming degree. I'm just spoiled by the uber machines I like to buy. Not that I can be said to afford them.

So... you are crawling up the walls because you didn't get your grandparents inheritance and yet you are looking for ways to spend it on here cause you admit you already have all the necessities. And we are talking about your grandparents inheritance here not your parents. NICE... real nice.

You don't have to get anything. Use what you have, and make the best of it. Instead of improving your possession count, improve yourself. Possessions will be obsolete in a couple years. Improving yourself will last a lifetime. "deprivation" builds character. I'm not sure how deprived someone with an iPhone is, but we can pretend.

There's people all over, even in the USA that would consider a netbook a huge improvement in life, and they'd create magic with it. Creating magic is free, and it can be given to other people so they can experience the magic too. That improves you, it improves the world, and you've then earned your MacBook if you still want it. By then, I'd hope your priorities changed, and you'd realize how frivolous, and pointless collecting trinkets is.

Not too mention any decent university will have a computer lab that can do anything school related.

Having your own laptop is convenient, but by no means necessary.

Grandparent, not grandparents. It's likely to be the only inheritance I'd ever get a part of anyway. Rest of extended family is ultra poor and my grandma just happened to be smarter than the rest of the family with her money as a teacher. I didn't care about the inheritance, but the fact my parents get it and are spending it on things that are beyond worthless when they already had nice things to begin with. (They went from a Chrysler 300C to a Escalade. It's not a huge jump but it's a waste of money.) They've just been spending it on things that are not that great considering they have a son who has been basically emptying his entire life savings on food and rent when there are things I'd rather be doing like going to dance events, getting better camera gear, and have a decent laptop. I've gone to maybe 2 this year because I was able to volunteer for a discount and then they were pretty close by. If I had better camera gear then I could end up doing photography as part of my discount but as it stands, I need better gear.

That's the whole fucking point of this thread.

I have everything I need to survive, but I'd like some convenience. Apparently that just goes everyone's head because they're too low in the troll grime.

I agree, why let your parents squander the money when it could be you squandering it for them. Get over your entitlement mentality and you will have much more success in life.

Why should anyone give to anyone then? Hmm?

Plenty of kids here at UW get 10x the amount I've gotten just in their fucking car. (It's not like I am asking for a fucking M3 here)

What about looking at this from your parents point of view. It's THEIR mother/father who died! You already said above that your parents never made more than 65k per year combined! Yet they managed to have a life, a house, and raise you to the point where you can go to college. I'd say after that they deserve to enjoy it and you don't get a say in how they should or should not be spending it. Now I know I'm the last person who should be giving advise on this as I am living at home off my own parents at 29 but at least I can see the truth for what it is!

Those kids likely come from wealthy families. I've seen LOTS and LOTS of kids who have their entire life paid for by their wealthy parents. They can afford too. You just said above your family is not well off.

Barely raised me. I did more raising of my own than they did. Better half of my first 15 years they were too drunk to do any raising of their own. So uninvolved in every aspect. They didn't save for college for me. They didn't do shit. All they do now is pay for my textbooks and some health costs that come up to make up for what they did. This summer they had to give me some money because the fucking job market sucks for people who've never had a job. Apply to 100+ places and you get 1 place to call you back, that's pretty awesome... Even then, it's 12/hrs week at most. That's why I've been burning through all my savings and living an extremely boring life when there's a thousand things I'd like to go out and do (but cost money).

The fact is that they are FINE now. I'm the one who is dying of boredom because I'm so fucking poor.

It wouldn't do a bit of good, you would just find all the reasons you couldn't, just like you always do. Keep whining like a little bitch, keep getting what you have been getting.

Your schtick is exhausting, the little whiner who won't.

Yeah, you know what's useless too? Food. That shit doesn't last years unless it's an MRE or twinkie. You shouldn't buy it anymore.

And an iPhone is not really that amazing. It's nice, but it's not like, "holy shit, worlds amazing." I can access internet on my phone and do a few other things, "omfg...." It's nice, but not the end all. It's not that expensive either.

Uh, I doubt it unless you're talking about people on the street or in shitholes. I currently have less (Usually much less) than $400/month of income in an expensive area. :colbert: It doesn't even pay my rent...

And like meh mah always said, I'm not people. Just because others can live in shit situations and be happy doesn't mean I am able to. Those people don't have wants like I do. (I could say needs, but you'd all argue semantics over such a trivial word)

It's not expensive because your parents paid for it. If you had to buy on your own it would be considered expensive.
