Mark (and others with 1.61 save probs)

I'm about done with BooH (version 1.5), when I finish I'm gonna install patch 1.61. In anticipation of probs I have copied my saved games to a new folder. If patch 1.61 blows out my saved games, will I be able to copying them back over to the PK folder and use them? Or, does 1.61 render your old saved games useless?

I really enjoyed Lenigrad, although I found it quite difficult. I'm amazed at the variation in levels. leningrad required me to replay and forced me to develope different tactics.

I'm NOT using any cards, the only boss I found easy to beat was in the collusium. My son suggested shooting out the fires and afterward he went down easily to the painkiller. Like a frog in a blender. That level was too easy (it and the cemetary I personally could do without). Just fire up the weedwacker and have a go!

After this, I'm going back to finish DE:IW or replay Far Cry. Unless I snag a copy of Riddick or KoTOR 2.

I'm not slick enough to give PK a numbered score, but for anybody who like FPS's I would recommend this game. I'll look forward to replaying this, especially my favorite levels. If my old saves won't work, I'll just get the "warp" hack so I can play what I want. With the warp hack, this become a collections of many games - just play those chapters one really likes :)

Fern

Yes, the easiest way is to send them to documents as a back-up . . . just in case.

ANYway, everytime you make a save - whether you delete itr or not - it keeps a folder in "Save" . . . when 1000 is reached, it can only do ONE more save which is overwritten by the next save. :p

took me long enough to figure it out . . . i was going to UNinstall and then REinstall the game when i saw the 1000 folders - mostly empty - in the save folder.

Oh, yeah . . . it's up to 8/10 i finished Alastor (GREAT ending graphically but too easy) and am playing thru on Nightmare to play the locked level (and i just got Far Cry today so it's perfect timing). ;)
:D

edit: i LOVED leningrad . . . . ":p" "to the people who say it is just run and shoot"

AND my SAVES are NOW working perfectly since i deleted 900 empty folders. :p

After palying for a while now I'm really impressed with the engine and levels, man this would have been killer RTCW2 game.

i don't understand the reference to Return to Castle Wolfie

are you tallking about the engine being used for RtCW's sequel?

PK is a unique game . . . . on the surface it appears to be a shooter, 'fun' much like Doom and Serious Sam . . . . then you realize there is some DEPTH. Especially when you REplay PK to unlock the extra levels and have to factor in the Tarot Cards and how you manipulate them to make your game easier. Some of the spots that appeared INaccesible, you realize can now be accessed by clever jumping - some jumps require using the PK weapon to assist. And the tactics DO vary from level to level.

This game has more replay value than any other i played in the last year.

Yea that's what I meant... put this engine in Gray Matters hands and have them do a sequel, you can only imagine what they would come up with.

about the secrets, I'm not reading the walthroughs and really trying to figure out the secrets on my own and man they are really hard to figure out.

and the swamp boss is starting to get to me... seriously has anyone ever killed him under 4 minutes... c'mon.

Piece of cake . . . . but you gotta have Mercy (use the golden cards 3 times), Double Time Bonus (Gold cards last 20 seconds longer), Rage (4x damage) and Triple Haste (Slow the world down 8x) . . . . you can DO him in about 2-1/2 minutes . . . . remember, you are NOT expected to get all The Black Tarot Cards on your first time thru . . . . and the MORE cards you get, the easier it is to get the rest.

Getting ALL of them is quite a feat . . . . some of the secrets take EXACT jumping sequences and some of the "secret places" are really in off the wall places. ;)

i still haven't beat Forest Level . . . Trauma difficulty is HARD - no souls, no demon morph, no quicksave and the witches are bitches. :p

BEWARE, there are some really WEIRD issues with v1.5 and applying v1.61 has messed up some of the 'saves' (i.e. your gold and cards may not "carry over" when you Sign a New Pact).

Yeah, I agree -part of the fun of the secrets in the finding. Once I did the best I could and tired of it, I looked at some screenies/walk through's. And now the fun part is actually getting them!

--------------------------WARNING! POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW-------------------------------------

As far as the Swamp Boss, I felt the same as you now. However, I have beat him under the time limit and received the card. This now at Nightmare mode with no cards at that time IIRC (if I did have a card it would've been "fury" - or increased damage.). And I aint no great player.

Once getting adept at avoiding his "tentacles" (the "water balls" he throws are easy, just blast 'em with the shotgun), the problem to beat the time limit seemed to me is getting those darned gas bubbles under his feet to explode in flames. which then renders him vulnerable etc.

But I'm a little perplexed how I did it so fast the last time. That last time the gas bubbles under his feet seemed more plentiful. I think the trick is stay as close as possible to him, Following him on the edge of the bank and use the shotgun. I somehow feel that if you start out successfully shooting the first of the gas bubbles, exploding them, they become more prevelant.

SOLUTIONS/FIXES FOR POSSIBLE BUGS and my experience

This was culled from a PM to another member and augmented, am posting here in case it helps someone.

I had received both PK and BOoh together, and installed both at the same time. This results in version 1.5. If you just get PK,or install it only and play it first, you'll have what I guess w/b version 1.1 or so. If you do end up with version 1.5, you will most certainly encouter a scritp error at Chapter 5, Level 1. The only work arounds are (1) installing the small patch I have linked in an above post. For those with dial-up, this is likely the preferred method as the small patch is effective and doesn't require the long d/l time of the rather enormous 1.61 patch, and (2) The enormous (338 MB IIRC) 1.61 patch

Word of warning . I found that after installing patch 1.61 my saved games created under version 1.5 would no longer work with version 1.61. Another poster elsewhere (Dream Catcher Forums) claims that his auto/checkpoint saves did though. Perhaps I only tried with quick saves. Will check that out this weekend and edit this post EDIT: Unable to tell diff between QS and Auto in my directory at this point 02/26/05. Will look for a method and post back . But forwarned that if begun under version 1.5 and, afterword apply patch 1.61, you may have to start again, or get a "warp hack"

Second Warning There are many places to d/l patch 1.61. Apparantly many of them are "bad" patches. I found a good one at Gamershell.com. This is my experience after first getting a bad patch:
Had a helluva time getting the newer/working 1.61 patch installed. Had to uninstall and reinstall the game(s) and then the new patch. PITA. Wierd thing though, the new install and patch has spread my PK files all over the place. The game.exe is under the bin file (?), it created several save files in different places. None of this stuff is in the PK file folder.

Had a difficult time figuring out where to put my backed-up 1.61 saves (from the bad patch version). Eventually had to fire up the game, make a couple saves in the cemetary, then track those down in Explorer and drop my saved games into that file. Wierd, but it now works *shrugs*

Lord knows, I pity the average parent who purchased this for their kid. Installed both games, ending up with version 1.5, which has a fatal coding error when you hit level 5. Then get the patch 1.61, which blows out all game saves. Kid gonna whine cuz he's got to start all over etc. Then finds (like me) THAT patch was defective in Chapter 3 Abandoned Factory. Hunts around finds a good copy of the patch, which then blows out the save game folder again and spews the PK file contents all over the HDD.

[I note that for me, apparently unlike others, my version of the bad patch did install (although I got a warning). At least the game thereafter reported being version 1.61. And it actually worked up till the "Abandoned Factory" level in Chapter 3]

Oh, and what may be a freindly bug. When I finished PK (version 1.5), I got ALL the cards upon the prompt when signing the pack in BOoh. I mean cards I didn't even earn in PK. Don't remember if I got any gold (I didn't use any cards when playing v1.5 as I was in insomnia mode, so I didn't need any gold)

I surely hope this doesn't disourage peeps from trying the game. With a little foreknowledge my problems can easily be avoided (simple, just install and get the GOOD patch b4 playing). Or if you have stepped into the "Poo" like I did, can get it fixed.

While I found the demo fun, in a run-n-gun fashion similiar to the UT series, the full game and expansion pack (BOoh) have many varied levels which require the development of tactics. Run-n-gun wil result in a quick and brutal death almost immediately. Overall, I really enjoyed the gfx and found it to run better than most games (at least as far bringing my system to it knees like other good graphical games).

And some of the levels contain beautiful design and are very very different from one to the other. I enjoyed the soundtrack/music as well and found it to enhance the mood of the level.

And I think many who completed one or both will agree that this game has a LOT of REPLAY VALUE. More so than I have seen in any game in a long time. BOoh particularly, can be re-played like a collection of great small games, for example containing an intense WW2 shooter requiring good tactics (Leningrad), or a beautifull and well designed game with jumping puzzles (Stone Pit).

BTW, Mark would you consider editing your title byline to reflect this new patch so it's not overlooked? Didn't think I should start another thread.

EDIT: And uhh based on my trials and tribulations with other patches as recounted above, I'm gonna leave it to someone else to test this thing ;)

Thanks Fern!!!

That's a great post . . . you went thru hell to get PK/BOoH working corectly.
(pun intended)

No, i ain't gonna be the first to try it . . . especially since i have only Forest to beat on Trauma and yes, i'll update the thread title.

As to Bosses . . . it's kinda weird, i beat Alastor on the First Try (the 3 story fight) . . . when i replayed the same difficulty, i couldn't do it without the Cards. Swamp Boss. . . .you are correct - blow the bubbles quickly and watch out for the slap.

Clear something up for me. If we have BOoH, do we patch that only or do we patch Painkiller and BOoH seperately? If I have BOoH installed, do I install this patch?

If you go to the website, there are only two patches available v1.61 (334MB) and update 1.61>v1.62 (108MB).

There are no other official patches . . . clearly BOoH is a continuation of PK and the patch should update them together Including PK's older engine. ;)
(at least patch v1.16 updated both of my games)

Like Mark says, it's prolly both are none. I don't expect you to have choice.

Even if I didn't have the "patch h3ll" described above, I'd hold off until some intrepid sole tried it and posted about it. Check the Dream Catcher Forum. I was there earlier today (duh) and no one had even got it d/l'd yet. The "test subject" was d/ling it when his router died. He prolly won't get it d/l'd, installed, and tested till tomorrow.

Also, looks like mostly MP fixes, which if you're not doing the MP thing anyway, well why bother?

More importantly, if it ain't broke, don't fix it - play it! ;)

Seriously, patches dropping in in triple digits, and consecutively, is highly uncalled for and poor form. While we're on the subject, demos are also blatently out of control, 1Gig combined for Republic Commando + Splinter Cell CT :Q

well v1.35 was decent for PK . . . v1.5 was a real mess (released with the PK/BOoH combo) and v1.61 (334MB) evidently fixed single player . . . . v1.62 is mostly for MP - isn't PK involved in a major gaming championship - they'd better fix the MP ;)

Yes v1.61 updates the gfx engine of both PK and BOoH (nice!) with somewhat better performance!

This PK/BOoH game really surprised me. i was expecting a Doom/Serious Sam type game and got more depth than i bargained for. . . . . obviously a lot of other PK players are also fans.

Great (if a bit flawed) game with lots of REplay

both :thumbsup::thumbsup:
. . . way up!

Painkiller = Quake2
for some reason ID took a U turn while making quake2 and all of a sudden had TE FUTUR and OMGSIBURGS instead of the hellish monsters in Quake1
also Painkiller has the same gameplay as quake1 had :D

btw, is it possibly to coop painkiller now?

(nothing beat playing co op in quake with 8 people :D)

Just installed this game today. I don't have the expansion pack yet. So far it's pretty cool. I need to read the manual to figure some things out. I've downloaded the patches but after reading some of the posts about problems, I may just stick with the base game.

I've playing on 'em pretty much since Xmas. About to finish second run through of PF + BOoh at "Nightmare Level"

There's a bunch of stuff not in the manual. If you really cream somebody with the alt fire of the painkiller, they'll spit out a bigger gold coin worth extra $

If you get funky with the primary and alt fire, I've seen a third fire option on some weapons. Ex. The elctro/shurkin gun can be made to spit blue bombs ;)
