Yeah I know, I got halfway through the game on my other rig. I never could play it for very long, it's kinda creepy. Long game for me too, always took me at least 20 minutes per level.

Wow. Sounds to me like you're playing this game entirely the wrong way. Conservatively taking out enemies by stealth and distance sniping, hoarding your ammo ... sucker.

Grab the weedwhacker and wade in.

Nah it was more like I just got the shotgun and I had dozens of skeletons coming for my head. I was trapped in the corner behind a gravestone quickly running out of shells.

See above regarding the judicious application of the Weedwhacker Type-R. Rev that sucker up and shred your way through the crowd.

Well, thanks to apoppin and M4H....I'll be swinging by my local EB/CC and see if they have this game on sale (no local BB for me). I DL'ed the single player demo yesterday and really enjoyed it.

I'd just like to say that PK has some of the BEST sky boxes ever in a video game. If you are playing the game, take a second just to look up at the sky :).

Oh and I really like the expansion pack. It is somewhat more 'extreme' than the original game, in that the levels are even more out there and random. But they are very fun and themed. The second level is an amusement park and has some awesome music that really sets the mood. The expansion packs sets the pace off with an orphanage for level 1.

Feb 3 Update and resurrection: OK, i beat Luci (surprisingly NOT tough . . . . the Hammer Guy was the baddest for me . . . even Allistar was pretty easy) and got the "first ending" . . . . crap . . . . now i DO want to see the "real ending" . . . . What's nest?
basically i "get" the game and have about 1/2 of the 24 needed cards . . . . as i understand it, i have to make a New Pact on "nightmare" difficulty (saving the black Tarot cards) and replay the entire game ALL over again including one new level and get ALL the cards i missed so i can then beat Luci all over again and then . . .

WHAT? start all OVER again and play it a 3rd time on Trauma level (including a new - "Prison Level") to get the 24th card?

OK . . . . LOTS and lots of more time needed . . . . you guys that finished it - is the "true ending" really worth it?

Even though i did't completely finish it, it is a GREAT game!

my biggest problem on Insomnia difficulty is that - for example - i have to collect ALL souls on a certain level to unlock a card BUT the level will let me complete it withOUT killing all the monsters (UNlike other levels).

Shall i get a "walkthrough"?

Given that you've seen the fake ending, yes. You'll feel much better about yourself.

I concur.

I assume you're talking about 3-3 "Military Base." There are five optional spawns you need to trigger. In order, the cargo plane, the three barracks just ahead of it, and the "side lot" after you fight the dozen or so tanks. :p

Thanks!

Yeah, Millitary Base . . . . the side lot would no longer trigger after i completed the rest of the level. :p

ANd it would have take me MUCH longer to play on Nightmare - heck, it took 10 evenings for me to beat this game the first time thru . . . i ain't that good of a gamer nor that patient.

ANyway, i have to play it TWICE more to get the ending? :(

And does the PK expansion pack have the same "false endings"?

edit: and i can't count either . . . took 7 evenings.

Well, keep in mind that you only need the cards, not the completion. Burn back to the ones you missed (list em?) and then just go through Nightmare to 2-1, which is Prison, and get that card. Then play through Trauma. It's worth it to play Trauma IMO, just because you'll have all the fun cards to wreak havoc with. :D

i'm a little confused here . . . . how do you get the card without completing the levels all over again?

And yeah, the fun cards DO change the game quite a lot. ;)

Just load your pre-Hell game, go back to the Tarot wheel, select a level, and play it. Complete the objectives on any difficulty other that Daydream and you get the card. Once you've done all this, whomp Lucifer's ass again and resave your card data. Presto, cards carry over.

Bah! . . . . the cards may carry over but the LEVELS are LOCKED all over again!

:p

OK, i played thru the game and got all 22 cards on Insomnia, Played thru ALL OVER again on "Nightmare" to get the cards on Prison level . . . . got the 2nd-last card (#23) BUT , , , , have to start all over again in the Cemetary on Trauma and play thru FOUR CHAPTERS (20 levels) to get to Forest and Final Card #24 . . . . THEN i can beat Luci for the "true" ending. :p

i already figured out what it is (a continuation of the first ending and leaves off where BOoH starts) . . . damn 'Trauma' is Hard . . . . and those ridiculously hard "jumps" in CITY ON WATER were over the top.

Anyway, great game . . . . normally i wouldn't bother with the puzzles and crap for the true ending . . . . but here i am. :p

The 1.6.1 patch is hefty but it adds SM 3.0 for NV40 owners. It doubled the speed of one of the benchmarks for me and slightly raised the other.

How does SM 3.0 and the improved GFX "look" compred to the original?

ANd i am still playing on "Trauma" . . . .

Well . . . i just gave Painkiller the highest complement i can give a game . . .

. . . i bought the expansion pack . . . BOoH . . . .

Yep, the gfx DO look better . .. IF i was to play the original agaiin, i'd install the mega-patch . . . HOWEVER, it is more system demanding ,. . . . i have to drop from 11x8 to 10x7 to get the dame peformance with equivalent settings (and there are higher settings in the pack for shaders 3.0).

So far, the expansion pack looks and play like the original - maybe "harder".

:)

and BOoH has confirmed what i thought was the "true" ending :p

no need to replay PK on Trauma for the THIRD time

:)

I agree, that's how I feel about PK too.

So now my report. I installed the expansion pack on top of the original game with patch 1.61 already installed. I was getting system crashes right and left when playing so I reinstalled patch 1.61 - the game was still crashing my system. Now mind you, I've been playing HL2, Doom 3, and UT2004 on my computer so I know it's stable. At this point I was considering wiping my system and starting from scratch with a new install of XP and the game. :(

But instead I decided to uninstall the game and the expansion pack and reinstall it all over without the 1.61 patch. I've played the game past where I'd crashed several times on my last attempt to play. So far so good. Regarding the game, I love the updated physics and the graphics are awesome. The evil clowns totally rock. :D

Bottom line: you might want to stay away from patch 1.61 if you're going to play the expansion pack, they don't like each other.

ps - patch 1.61 was fine with the original PK game. I played it for several hours with no problems. So if you don't plan on getting the expansion pack, feel free to use the patch.

Reason for that is that v1.61 supercedes BooH - v1.5 ;)

You may be able to install PK + Expansion + Patch in that order, but don't do that until after you beat the game. :)

- M4H
So what is it? Do you install v1.61 after the expansion pack?

Does it do anything for the pack?

i have Battle Out of Hell and it is more of the Same - with better gfx then the original - more options in advanced video - and salso a bit more demanding on your system - i play with everything On and Max and Ultra BUT had to drop from 11x8 to 10x7 to get the same FPS as in PK.

and it is harder too . . . . the Insomnia difficulty in BOoH is about a hard as Nightmare in PK. ;)

edit: this time i "cheated" and looked ahead at the PK:BOoH walkthrough (i bet NO one ever got every Tarot Card in PK w/o some 'help') . . . . has anyone found the 10th Black Card yet? :p

A little offtopic, but has anyone else experience horrible stuttering during the cutscenes in PK. I have an AMD64 3500 and 6800OC card and the stuttering in the cutscenes is the worse I've ever seen. The game, otherwise, plays great, even with settings up high.

Hey Guys!

I've been enjoying the game and this thread  A couple of things:

I'm Stuck! I'm at Chapter 5, Level 1 "City on the Water". I believe I'm near the end. Looks to be the last building in the city whith the Skulls and fat boys with machine guns.

About a minute into this "building" I get kicked back to the desktop with a script error reported. It gives me the option to abort, retry or ignore. No matter what the game closes. Any suggestions?

Also, I got both the orinal game and BoOH. I'm running version 1.5. Would the 1.61 patch do anything for me? I thought SM 3.0 was for the newer cards? Yet I see Mark talking about improved gfx and you've got 9800XT right?

If the newer patch fixed my prob and gave me better gfx to boot, that'd be great.

Fern

EDIT I found THIS but unless somebody can talk me though it, I'm not sure I follow what they are saying about altering the .lua script. EDIT#2 I didn't find this helpful, See below for fix to those with version 1.5

Have you guys gotten to this point yet? and what drivers are you using?
